New Shoes!!!!

Oh

My

GOD!!!!

Wow! If my feet had lips they would kiss me full on the mouth!

Wow! Sooooooooo awesome! I liked running before, but man did those shoes make a difference!

Today was a scorching 43 degrees and I didn't even feel it! All I could feel was how light those shoes were and how SOFT they felt when they hit the ground each time!

Seriously people! The right shoes make all the difference! I wore them for a day first to get them slightly worn in and after the first run I really noticed the difference!!! My mom sent me some money for my birthday (aug 1st) and she told me to buy something I needed.... HELLO Hong Kong and half sizes in shoes!!! 13 was too big, 12 too tight, 12.5..... Bingo!!! We have a winner! Past 2 days running have been a dream!!! My ankles, knees and poor old feet sure notice the difference! Now that I am avoiding the traffic and sticking to the park running is becoming even more of a joy!

Even though for 20 years I considered runners and joggers to be idiots, I now happily cast myself into the same category! And "real" running shoes make all the difference!! Amazing how "good enough" simply wasn't in reality. So worht the trip to Hong Kong.

And now, since I have proper shoes.... and the motivation..... and the legs to do it.... I am going to start looking for a run. There must be a 5km run somewhere in this city of 10 million..... And I aim to find it! I may not place as well as Curvie, but the time has come for me to actually do it! I was going to wait for fall and cooler weather, but in all honestly, I really am getting used to running in the heat. I suppose if one trains in 40 degree heat long enough it is more than do-able... I may not place as well as you Curvie, but I plan to give it my best!

Quick question to all you other runners.....

Do you all notice your legs are getting MEGA beefy looking? I am not complaining mind you, and the fact I am quite a bit larger than your average type runner may have something to do with it, but my legs are getting pretty meaty..... My "skinny" friends are all dying of envy over how "shapely" and big my legs are getting.... I have read other posts of people who didn't want or like that big beefy look, but i am eating it up! My wife recently bought me smaller pants, and even though the waist fit, it was the quads that were too tight....

Is this a common phenomenon with runners? Based on what i have seen, usually runners are slim to moderate size when it comes to leg bulk... But seriously, my legs are getting BIG!!!! If the rest of my body matched people would accuse me of steroid use!!! I do 20 deep squats and 20 deep lunges on each side to warm up for my runs everyday, but even with that it seems "beefier" than all the others I know who run... Maybe a temporary thing....

Any ideas?

sirant

Glad to hear you're loving the new shoes.
They really do make all the difference in the world.

I always manage to get heel blisters no matter what I do, and I usually wear my shoes til the backs wear down to the plastic, ouchy.
I have oddly shaped little feet, haha.

I got some new runners last week but haven't had much time to use them. I'm heading to the gym tonight (rainy day in Boston, eww). Gonna run for an hour, and work on some rowing and my arms.
Going on a big canoe/camping trip with a bunch of friends this weekend, want to make sure 'the guns' are working properly, haha.
I usually do about a half hour of strength training when I hit the gym, switching days between arms and legs. I always focus more on the arms though, I've always had ridiculously muscley legs (born skier I suppose). If my lungs could keep up with my legs I'd be a marathon runner I tell ya! But barefoot on the beach of course, since my feet hate shoes, haha.

Thank you Hajni!! :D :D

Sirant: Whoo whoot! Glad you got those shoes. The beefiness may be just genetic, like your body type does that with added muscle. It's highly likely that your legs will get smaller with more fat loss as well.

Where's DaybyDay?? i wanna hear about the 5K!!

more injuries last week. was in bed for the whole week. I lifted a washer and broke my back. To make it worse, it fell right on my toes. Couldnt run nor even walk for the past 10 days. Hope to resume next week atleast.

I really slacked the last 2 weeks on running. when logged into map my run I looked at my july calendar and i ran almos every other day.I want to get back into that mode.I would love to do another 8-10 miles on Sunday that would be so awesome!

So everyone running a 5k or whatever run post your dates!
My next 5k is August 25th the womens run in Frankfurt, Germany

Hi there, can I join? :) I love running and am going back to school in about a week and a half...need somewhere to get the motivation to get around to the gym throughout the week...let me know! I'm not TOO much of a bother, usually!

whoa girl - that's absolutely ridiculous~! i just starting my running a couple weeks back and so i'm up to 3 miles MAX.. but you're an inspiration! Running outside is so much more fun than on a treadmill. I mean, the wind, ohhh awesome! and I like going around my neighborhood and checkin' out everyone's gardens while I'm at it. Do you run with a buddy? or just on your own..

buddies r fun but they talk too much haha.

Hey thanks!!!
I really did not think I could ever go this far.The funny thing is I still had more in me-Running is definitely mind over matter.
I wish i had a running buddy- the one person i tried to start running with never showed up.I guess in a way its not so bad by myself because I dont end up burned out trying to keep up with someone too fast for me and I dont ever quit nor have the urge too because someone is whining we have too.

I still haven't signed up for any 5 K's yet, not really up in courage. There is one in my neigborhood on Oct. 21st, we'll see. So far I passed on to every one of them. I don't know what is wrong with me. Even if i walk at the end..
So, I am keeping up my running, some days 2.5 miles, some days 3 miles and i even attempted a 4 mile run one day and have done it!!
My speed is increasing from 4.5mi/hr to 5mi/hr. Keeping it steady there.
I am also doing other exercises, reducing my running a bit. Turbo jam, exercise ball, weights.. boot-camp class.. I am not sure running will be a life-long commitment for me. :)
Rimay, I posted in your diary, you are absolutely amazing girl!! 8 miles in one strech!!! Congrats!! You are so ready for a 10k!!
Hajni

I've been seriously slacking in the running department this week.
Work has been running me ragged; I'm covering for someone that's out and doing my own work, so it's been pretty hellish.
Also, went on a big canoeing/camping trip last weekend; I think I pulled every muscle in my body. Lots of heavy lifting! Over 20 mi's of canoeing (3 canoes tied together, 8 people, with all our supplies for 3 days, floating 2 big rafts behind, and pretty much only 2 people paddling... (I went with a bunch of girly girls who would rather sit and complain about how slow we're going than actually paddle). It was a good time, but very tiring and my body is still sore a week later (and still very purple from bruises everywhere).
So needless to say, running hasn't been an option this week. I felt terrible on Tuesday when I was walking home from the T(rain) and saw all these people running, it was soo nice out, made me feel terrible, but even walking has been tough this week.
Hopefully I'll make it to the gym this weekend. It's supposed to be less humid here as well tomorrow & sunday, so maybe a nice long outside run. I'd love to run all through Charlestown and into the North End. Maybe reward myself with some fantastic pizza. Mmm...

Running is definitely mind over matter.
I'll absolutly second that. If you push your self, you'd be surprised how much you can run. On a good day, I can run up to 6 miles (and that's BEFORE field hockey practice). I live by a moto, you can keep running until your physically unable. and By that I mean faint or literly pass out. Also, Some people have talked about running on a treadmill, it really is better to run outside if you can because you burn more calories and get a better work out. This is because of factors such as wind, heat, and natural hills in the land (even when running on a track). You can even test this by easily sprinting a mile on the treadmill and then trying to sprint a mile on the track. You'll find you need to go at a slower pace, more of a run, not a sprint. I figured this out a few years ago, isn't it interesting?

awwa, you can defianitly do it! Try running a 5K by yourself, so then you'll feel ready (if you can do it once, you can od it again!) and NEVER walk when running. Even if you have to jog realllly realllllly slow. DO NOT walk. It'll discourage you and once you walk, it's harder to start running again.

I totally disagree with the no walking sentiment, and that its harder to start again. it may be easy to say that IF you can run 2k or 5k straight, but if you can't run for 30 seconds straight, "no walking" is just plain bad advice.

I'm doing a walk/run program and its working out great. I started out walking 2 minutes, running 30 seconds....now I walk 2 minutes, then run 2 minutes. I do 5k 3-4 times a week and I'm gradually building up. ANY beginner's running program will tell you to gradually build your run time. rushing into running is not only bad advice, but is usually the main cause of discouragement, failure and injury in beginners.

take your time, enjoy and be proud of your small achievements, and don't rush yourself.

I totally disagree, anyone can jog very very slowly for as long as they want. It's all in the mind. and when I say jog slowly, I mean you could probablly walk faster, but by joging, you are using more parts of your body, even if it's at the slowest pace you can go. and sure, you should defiantly (jeeze, i can never spell that word!) build up the running, like mabe running an extra lap each day and joging the rest. Or a great thing to do on a track is to sprint the cruves, then lightly jog the straight parts.

In the end, I guess it's what works best for YOU.

Jogging at 3 mph uses more energy than walking at 3 mph. If your goal is burning calories, then jogging is of course better than walking.

But if your goal is increasing your running speed, then walking saves energy, allowing you time to recover, and allowing you to run faster when you do run. If you have intervals of fast running, your legs become trained in fast running, and this is what increases your speed. This is better than jogging at a constant slow-ish speed.

Let's put some numbers into this. Say I want to complete 3 miles in 30 minutes:

- Option One: I could run the first mile in 9 minutes, jog the second mile in 12 minutes, and run the third mile in 9 minutes.
- Option Two: I could run the first mile in 8 minutes, walk the second mile in 14 minutes, and run the third mile in 8 minutes.

Option One would burn marginally more calories, because jogging is less efficient than walking. But Option Two trains me to run at a faster speed, and when my speed increases, my future workouts will burn more calories.

I would go for Option Two.

Hi. So, I went from not being able to run for 2 minutes straight to being able to run 3.5 miles non-stop at 11.5 mph. I did this in a matter of about 5 weeks. I'm training for a 5k on October 13 and I'm a new runner and I'm overweight (see my ticker) but working on changing that. I'm just wondering what sort of work I can do to improve my speed. Should I be employing some interval training methods? Or should I just try to up my speed each week. By the way, I run mostly on the treadmill (usually during the week) but get in two outdoor runs, usually on the weekend. I can go faster on the treadmill, of course, but the speeds I mentioned above are outdoors on a relatively flat or nearly flat surface. Sometimes I'm able to run outdoors as often as three times per week.

Thanks!

Tamara
