Runner's Club

I have a 10k In about 13 days and I have ran only 3 time in the past week and a half! I really need to get motivated! This is going to be my first 10K and even thought I say I just want to finish I surely want to have a decent time I am aiming for 1 hour or less-LOL I think its attainable but at the same time I think I really need to learn to pace myself before I can make goals like that.
Anyone ran a 10k what was your time?

Hi. So, I went from not being able to run for 2 minutes straight to being able to run 3.5 miles non-stop at 11.5 mph. I did this in a matter of about 5 weeks. I'm training for a 5k on October 13 and I'm a new runner and I'm overweight (see my ticker) but working on changing that. I'm just wondering what sort of work I can do to improve my speed. Should I be employing some interval training methods? Or should I just try to up my speed each week. By the way, I run mostly on the treadmill (usually during the week) but get in two outdoor runs, usually on the weekend. I can go faster on the treadmill, of course, but the speeds I mentioned above are outdoors on a relatively flat or nearly flat surface. Sometimes I'm able to run outdoors as often as three times per week.

Thanks!

Tamara

Hi Tamara. 11.5 mph is incredibly fast! Are you sure you don't mean 11.5 km/h? Because that's still a lot faster than I can do. To have done that in only 5 weeks is absolutely amazing - go you! Do you play a lot of other sports?

Interval training is much more effective (for improving speed) than just running generally. Have you tried "fartlek"? Basically, warm up for a bit, then have bursts of speed over various distances, with recovery jogs in between. e.g. jog 5 minutes to warm up, sprint to the next lamp-post, jog to the red car, sprint to the third tree, jog to the end of the road, etc... It's really good fun and it's less boring than a typical interval session on a track. You can read more about it .

Good luck for your 5K!

I've never run a 10K race before. Don't tire yourself out this week by trying to make up for training, and good luck!

I did 10 miles yesterday and it felt great! Everytime I put off running a few days then I get out I always think to myself why dont you do this everyday-LOL
I really cant accurately say how fast i would run a normal 10 miles because my city is built in the middle of hills no matter what direction I run there will be a 200+ steep hill climb one after the other.I ran for about 1hr50 minutes including my stop in the store to get water and stop lights.I think it was one of my best runs. I still need to learn to push myself harder-its just so hard.

FAITH 333 i see your training for a half marathon-How is it going? I think that will be my aim in spring or maybe before;) I just need to loose more wieght I will feel so much better and I am sure it will help me get faster.

i know ive been gone so long .... i got some red running shoes today though!

now i just need to make my toe better so i can wear them and run :D

You must be awesome at hillwork! :)

It's going great, thanks! It's less than a week away (on Sunday) so this week I'm tapering and carb-loading, which is so much fun :D Unfortunately it's possible that my period will start on race day. But it's my first race so I'm not looking for a particular result, just to have fun :) If you're training in 2008, I'll join you! I'm thinking about doing another one in the spring, too.

Hi, Faith333!

Ha. I meant I can do an 1 mile in 11.5 minutes. So I can do 3.5 miles in 40 minutes, but I can do that same distance in about 38 minutes on the treadmill. Oh man, 11.5 miles an hour is like a 5 minute mile. Holy hell, I don't know if I'd ever be able to do that. My ultimate goal is to be able to do three miles in in about 24-25 minutes on a flat surface.

I can't stop laughing over what I'd typed.

Thanks for the interval training/fartlek info and the remarks about my upcoming first 5k!

Is this half-marathon your first one? One of my long-term goals is to be able to run a marathon non-stop, and actually finish before the cut off time. I'm taking baby steps. I hope to do the local Celtic Winter Solstice 5 Miler in the middle of December. I think at the rate I'm going, I should be able to run the five miles without stopping.

Marathons

I've been putting off training....

I'm actually dissuaded by running on asphalt or cement--when I run, I run in the woods up and down hills and after 40 minutes, my muscles are too fatigued to run any more. Excuses, excuses.

So last Sunday I participated in a Triathlon relay--yup, I did the running part. It was only 2.5 miles and I ran as fast as I could.....only to find it took goddamm 18:19!!! What is that, like 7n and 1/2 minute miles? I'm really stumped. Yeah there was a big hill, but it shouldn't have slowed me THAT much!! Hell, in May I did 6.2 miles in 42:52 (6:55 pace). I'm really weirded out and have been running a lot this week.

I ran yesterday and this morning, but have been weight training and doing yoga too, on account I have more time on my hands due to my cut hours. My stress is going down and my life is getting happy again, so I'm thinking of training for a half marathon or a triathlon soon. (um, training for next year)

There is a "Mermaid Run" in Fremont in March 08. I wanna WIN it! Last year a woman won the 10K in 44 minutes....I'm already fantasizing about winning the damn race. Oh, I just have to continue training! I like being fast. A fast bunny. Someone's always faster, but once in a while...

OH! I took 1st place for women and 4th overall for a run in Big Basin. Jeezus I look like a fuckin AMAZON!! Can you tell I've been weight training?!?!?

Hi all,

My name is Bella and I've just recently joined this forum. Is it ok if I join this thread?

I wouldn't classify myself as a runner per se as I have a long way to go. I used to run cross country when I was younger and loved it, unfortunately when I hit my late teens and early 20 (I'm no 22) I started gaining the weight and not doing much physical activity .

Anyhow, my goal is to run 5ks without feeling puffed, tired and sore. I'm taking this very slowly as I don't want to push myself all out. I can run for 20 minutes non stop but my breathing is all over the place, which I need to work on. My lungs give out before my legs. So starting today I am doing the Couch to 5k program (found in the cool runnings website).

The C2K is a 12 week running program building up intervals of running each week to get you running a full 5ks by the end.

I can't wait for the day when I can run 5k's without stopping. Well thanks for reading and I’ll report my progress.

Cheers :)

Aching

i just started last week to get back on the treadmill and go to weight watchers. in my first week i lost 5 lbs, but when i walk on the treadmill the pain or ache i have in the front of my(chins) calves is soo painful! did i over do it? or is this good pain, or will i feel for this for awhile??? any suggestions?

*Bella*,

I have been training for seven weeks for a 5k on October 13. I started training on August 3rd or 5th, I can't remember the exact date. That was the first time I really started doing anything seriously. I started jogging in April but quit around the end of the month, only after two weeks, because of a knee injury. Anyway, at that point in April I could only jog for a 12-minute mile for 20 minutes straight, and then I was beat. I took three months off because I wasn't dedicated, nor was I serious. Anyway, when I started in August I had to work my way back up. And as of three weeks ago I could run 3.1 miles (5k) at a really slow pace, huffing and puffing. Now I can do 5k on flat, even terrain in thirty minutes. And today I ran the course of my race (1 mile up hill, 1.25 miles flat, and less than a mile down hill) in 34 minutes, but I was also talking to my running partner as I ran.

I'm not telling you all of this to brag, but instead telling you all of this because the strides I have made as a runner or with fitness have made me feel so awesome about myself. I feel if I can do this, I can do anything because I have lead a very sedentary lifestyle up until now (I'm 30). And also, if I can do it, anyone can do it in a matter of time!!!

Congratulations on taking on the C25K. I did a sort of modified version of it or a speedy version of it. I was doing the 8 week plan but ended up making more progress in a shorter amount of time.

You can do it!

Tamara

Curvie Girlie,

How long have you been running? I'm just curious because, your time doesn't seem too bad to me. But I've only been running for two months. I can't wait until I start complaining about only doing a 7.5 minute mile! I think 8 miles an hour is fast as hell, but I'm only running 10 miles an hour on flat, even terrain right now.

Tamara

Hi Tamara,

No, I didn't think you were bragging at all. Thank you for sharing your story with me, you have actually inspired me - thank you.

I did week one of the C25k program today and I found it a little slow so thinking of moving up a couple of weeks to run longer intervals. I found this really cool site where this guy has made podcasts of the program. It's set to great music and he tells you when to change from walking to running.

I too can't wait for the day when I can run and hold a conversation. Though I think that's a way off but its definitely something to work on.

Thanks for your inspiring story.

Cheers Bella

Hi guys'n'gals! Another newbies here...newbie to this site, but not to running...I've been a "runner" since June 2006. I have my first official half marathon coming up next week, and can hardly wait.

So, i have been challenged to run 3 miles in under 30 minutes for 500 dollars! OMG! I need help!

I can STRUGGLE through 2 miles (at about a 25 minute pace) and one mile is no problem. I can run one in under twelve. What kinds of things should i be doing (besides my comfort zone -- the eliptical)?

Thanks!

So!
You're currently running a mile in 25 minutes? Is that right?
Or are you running 2 miles in 25 minutes?!?!?
If the latter...
When do you have to run the 3 miles in 30 minutes?
Are you new to running?
Where do you run? (outside or on a treadmill?)
With some "speed work" and some time, you could easily run 3 miles in 30 minutes.

Thanks for your support.

I can run 2 miles in 25 minutes (but it hurts).
One mile in under 12 is not a problem.

I need to run the 3 miles in under 30 by Dec 31

Also, years ago (like 4), in high school, I ran track. I ran the 400, 800, and sometimes 1600(mile) but was never amazing- but could keep up.

My best mile - at that point in my life - was a 6:47 (so depressing to think what has happened to me)...

So you have about ten weeks to train...you can do it.
Where is your pain after running?
