Performance -Not Enough!

Interesting info! Of course, my first goal is to just participate & complete a tri...but I can't help but wonder.

Next question. Last night I swam 2 miles non-stop (took about 81 minutes....is that good time??)....anyways, I was sharing a lane with someone and as I caught up I could swear I felt a draft/pull!? Do you draft in the water too???

Would you prefer me post a "Questions about Triathlon" thread somewhere else in the forum instead of your journal?

the water has a major draft as long as you are close enough. When there is a big ol group you can really feel it. I know, becuz when they pass me I can feel it. hahaha

40 min per mile is not bad I don't think. My miles come in around 33 or so. But a swimmer, lik Sparrow for instance, swims 17-18 min miles. CAN YOU IMAGINE???

It is fine to discuss this stuff here, but a tri thread may get read by more lurkers. Yes let's do that. start another thread and see how it goes.

So far today
ride: 5.7 mountain bike to pool.

swim:300 warm up
6X50 "MiniMaxies" my best was 41:11 with 28 strokes. (total strokes plus time= 69:11 my record)
8 X 25 sprint- different strokes- I am getting better at back without swallowing gallons
12 X 100 (25 hard, 25 easy, 25 easy, 25 easy -rotating)
tim in pool- an eternity

ride: 5.7 home
*thinking i may run to spin class tonight- (5+ to spin, Spin, 5+ home) that will make a 2 brick day, and may make me sick. But, I have two interviews tomorrow and need to stay downloaded.

p.s. Sparrow- that 12 miles was broke into 2 sections of 6 miles each, with biking in between. If I set out to run 12 miles I will not run as fast. Unless its a race  Or I am trying to keep up wit you!

Well its still good, any way you split it. Plus you did do a full on spin class in the middle. That in and of itself is exhausting.

MINI MAXIES! I'm so proud :DThats a really good total number-especially for someone that thinks swimmers suck :). My faster swimmers in the water hover around 60for their total number...so thats your goal :)

When you're doing backstroke imagine you are on a weight bench and you can rotate side to side as your arms move around your body and head but other than that your core is supported by the bench and you can't bend it around or you'll fall off. Rotation in backstroke is as important as in freestyle.

Good luck with your interviews!!!

What are those Mini Maxies?:)

Count your strokes (freestyle) for 2 laps continuous and get your time for those 2 laps (in seconds) and then add the 2 numbers together. You are trying to get the maximum efficiency in the water, with the lowest time and strokes. To do it you don't necessarily go fast. You have to change variables like kick more, glide off the wall further, rotate/roll your body to reach, increase your turn over etc.

Ohhhhhh......and here I was thinking Mini-Maxies were some kind of feminine hygiene product that woman might use once a month. :D

A mile in 18 minutes????? Are you serious???? When I swim across the pool & back, I can (when sprinting) do it in about 54 seconds. That's 25-meters across and 25-meters back. A brisk pace is about 1 lap per minute. One guy who was a competitive swimmer can do a full lap in about 48 seconds, and you're telling me Sparrow can do it in 33.75 seconds? (32 laps = 1 mile). What is Sparrow, half woman, half dolphin? :D

FF is exaggerating a bit, which is really nice of him :D My best mile time is 19 minutes and that was a long time ago. I used to race the mile at swim meets. That was one of my best events. I was all distance. I am average in actual speed in the water. A length is termed a "lap", so in 2 laps-going for my mile split-I average 40 seconds at my feet after a flip turn. That doesn't equate even close to a 19 minute mile. Its more like 24 minutes. My best swim split in a sprint tri has been 22 minutes. But I've only done 2 of them ;) I'm happy if I can average 1:20s per 100 meters. Much more than that for triathlons isn't really necessary unless yer goin for the purse and you're strong in everything :D

Still.....VERY impressive!!!!!!

Btw...quick note. My knee is feeling much better. Rode my bike up & down the street today, think I'm ready for a light spin class. Looks like it may have been a horrible sprain, surgery may not be req'd...although something is clicking & feeling odd in there, but the PT-guy says it's nothing to worry about (not sure I believe that.....), but yeah, I'm about 85% better!:beerchug:

went to the college campus to run and found a great thing-- they had this 5 mile route called "par for the course" that had lil stops like golfing.. 18 holes. each hole had stretches, pullups, they even had rings.....

I made 3 laps.

run:15 miles, plus all kinds of stuff. 3:52:97

Sweat Daily!

it was very cool. there was balancing beam, hand walk on parallel bars, that ladder over head thing, achilles tretch, hammy stretch, and so on, all sorts of cool things.

Swam today, tried the FF 5-stroke breath technique. Can be done for very limited time and a slow/modest rate. No idea how you do that. 3 for me.

15 miles?....15 miles?:eek::eek:

How many years have you trained to get to this point? Do you think most people can attain this level, or (like Lance Armstrong) do you just have genetics that lend themselves to such capacity?

I do not use a 5 stroke breath pattern goof ball. You skim when you read, an run at the mouth when you type.

When I settle in for distance I use a double pump kick and breath long and slow on my right side. But- If I shorten my srokes a bit, and stay calm, i can go 5 strokes.

Here's a good workout for you in the pool-- swim 100's and only take one breath per 25 meter length. Maybe start with 50's. Up and back with two breaths.

I was in shape "sorta" all my life, but I smoked and did drugs and all that. About a year or so ago i had a skydiving "hard landing" incident, gained several pounds, and since then I have recovered- "plus some."

Endurance athletics is about comittment. Very few will turn the T.V. off, let alone give the time and pain involved being able to step out the door and go 150 minutes or more several days in a row. Or, once they get the vanity they are looking for they will stop. WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYBODY IN THIER RIGHT MIND WANT TO COMPLETE A 140.6 Ironman event within 14 hours, at the midlife crisis age of 40?

a convertible and girlfriend are much easier.

FF

That reminds me FF. I read a few posts up about your breathing pattern and you were talking about how when you breathe on one side you look up at the sky. Do you feel that kinda screws up your stroke pattern? What is your other arm doing when you rotate that far? Has it already pulled beneath your body? Is there a hitch in your stroke due to that star gazing? :D

There are nicer ways to tell a guy to f-off your journal. You may think you were clear, but I read 5-stroke per breath. I could never swim the entire pool in just one breath, maybe the first lap but after you get going breathing is more then an every-20 second event. Nevermind. Going, going...

Great journal, dude!

Been reading for a while, not that I've said much. But I realize that I've only been hurting myself by keeping quiet, because maybe you can help me.

You see, I really want to do a triathlon. I only have one little problem. My swimming isn't so much swimming as staving off drowning, one stroke at a time.

Oh, and my knees don't much like the up and down of biking. Old injuries, of course.

And...I hate running. The only thing that keeps me going is calculating pace and times and doing math in my head. That runner's high thing has got to be a myth! Why else have I not seen it from the 1 to 3 miles I can run!

So, how can I be more like you, dude? That's my goal. Except, I don't want to lose breast fat either. :jump1:

Thanks a bunch! You rock! :beerchug:

BSL- i sure hope you were typing with a smile. if not then please re-read my post with an inflection of razzin ya a bit and having fun. I do not continue in things that are not fun. On the other hand I will also say this- it is not my goal to have a following. it is my goal to FINISH a 140.6 event. the relationships here are just a side benefit.

Sig- you are a riot! hahaha I want to do a triathlon exxcept I am drowning, I hurt when I bike, and I hate running! hahahahaha When I started traingin for thsi stuff I felt the same way! I was just trying to impress Sparrow.

Of the three disciplines, which do you do most often? Let's work on that one first.

 okay you totally avoided my questions.

Impress ME? I'll only be impressed if you do that 140.6 by sundown and then around midnight call me up and say you can't sleep and want to go for a jog-and maybe even a swim because you want to start training for the next one.... early. hahaha

Sig...um....yikes. :D

BSL-you can't take anything FF says to heart. Sometimes he sounds bitey but its only cause he's hormonal. Just treat him like a girl and you'll be best friends in no time

300 workout isn't as hard as people said :p
