Weight-Loss New WLF Team Challenge

Weight-Loss
It's down to San - but I am pretty sure that we are still accepting new people today...

Get all your friends to get in touch today if they want to join.

Quick question: In the rules, you said "At the beginning of the challenge, you set yourself a goal loss. If you manage to come within 1.5% of that target by the end of the challenge, you will receive 15 extra points."

Does a person losing at least 98.5% of their weight loss goal get the 15 pts? In other words, exceeding your goal is OK? Or do I have to stay within 98.5-101.5% of my targeted goal to get the 15? That makes setting a goal pretty tough. Thanks.

I realised that the wording in that was a bit off. Exceeding your goal is definitely okay! Just if you don't quite make it, you've got some wriggle room with the 1.5%. If you get to, or even lower than your goal weight, the points are of course all yours!

I will accept new people until Saturday, and possibly into the first week of the challenge. The more, the merrier! So if you know anybody else who wants to join, send them our way! :)

Cory, of course you can join even if you know that you might not lose as much at certain times. During the last challenge, I had an accident, and even ended up putting weight back on for a while. It can happen to everybody, so if you want to join, you're more than welcome. :)

Anybody who still wants in on the fun, just grab a scoresheet and post it here http://weight-loss.fitness.com/threads/57896-WLF-Team-challenge-score-sheets-ONLY.

I will assign new people to the teams later on today. :)

I am a little uncertain about this aspect... It is probably best to iron it out now - before we think of our goals... Especially since points are dependant on it...

Is there going to be a minimum level for people to set as a goal - e.g. 10% (over the 14 weeks which is about 0.72% per week)? I am asking since - if anything above the level gives us points - taking it to extremes there would appear to be nothing to stop people saying "my goal is to lose 1 pound" and then claiming the points the minute that they exceeded that goal... While some people tend to set an unrealistically high goal - others may want to set an easily attainable goal. People have a number of factors to consider ranging from how they are motivated by targets to things like a desire to be sure of getting good points for their team.

Also is the 1.5% wiggle room - 1.5% of the desired loss or 1.5% of the start weight?

e.g. Case study
Although I know that 1% /week is a healthy rate I know that I do not seem to get it... I worked hard in the last challenge and didnt get it so I decide that for the good of my team I should set nearer to 0.9% per week (which I didnt get in the last challenge either) but might have a better chance... I really don't know...

My weight is 153 pounds...
1% per week over 14 weeks i.e. 14% - gives me a target of 21 pounds...
0.9% per week over 14 weeks i.e. 12.6% gives me a target of 19 pounds

I am just wondering what the 1.5% wiggle room actually means...
So - are we saying that 12.6% - 1.5% so anything above 11.1% of start weight gets the points i.e. 17 pounds lost or more?

Or are we saying that the target is 19 pounds less 1.5% wiggle room which would need a loss of 18.7 pounds or more?

Good point, Omega, one that I haven't taken into account. I just assumed that people aren't really that bothered about the points, and more about the spirit of the competition. But you are right, and it's something that should be clarified straight away.

Now, if only it was easy to clarify it. I don't want to dictate a 'minimum weight loss' to people. That's just not fair. Some people, like me, have hundreds of pounds to lose, others maybe only 20 or 30. So...let me get my brain into gear here....

I would say that the goal should be realistic - I went through several examples, and found that 0.5 % per week should been an achievable goal for anybody.

Examples:

At 350 lbs, 0.5% equals 1.75 lbs. Over 14 weeks, that would put it at 24.5 lbs target weight loss.

At 250 lbs, 0.5 equals 1.25 lbs. Over 14 weeks, that would put it at 17.5 lbs target weight loss.

At 150 lbs, 0.5 equals 0.75 lbs. Over 14 weeks, that would put it at 10.5 lbs target weight loss.

So, in order to claim the points for getting to your target, your target weight loss goal must be at least 0.5% loss per week. That is sensible and should be achievable for everybody.

In regards to the 1.5% rule - the 1.5% are based on the percentage you achieve to lose. So, if your goal is to lose 15% of your weight, and you only manage 14%, that's still eligible for full points.

I hope that clears it up. I will edit the rules on the first page to reflect this.

Oh my word... way too much math for me this early in the morning! LOL

My goal for the end of March was to hit 200lb. For some reason I've been stuck at 213lb all week. This morning the scale was all over the place - 210.8lb - 213lb. I was thinking of setting my goal for the challenge at the 200lb mark, perhaps even 199lb just to get out of the 200's. If I did my math correctly (which was my worst subject) using 200lb as my goal, that comes out to .71lb a week or 1.065%. Is that right? So this would be an acceptible goal?

I think that it makes sense to have the points bonus based on the straight 0.5% per week figure for everyone - so there is no problems with people setting themselves challenging or attainable targets. That is actually easier to deal with from an administration perspective.

Then people can still set an additional "personal target" that they can make as challenging or easy as they like... No points will be based on the achievement or lack of it... On the last challenge - there were people setting really high targets that got me worried... I think that Korrie said that she wanted to lose 30 pounds and some others said that too... I voiced my concerns and they said effectively that they like to shoot for the stars... Other people are motivated by seeing targets achieved and setting new ones... They could even change their personal target as they go...

Mandy, you're correct, that would be an entirely acceptable goal. :)

Omega, I was actually one of those that aimed too high in the original challenge, with 40 lbs. Even though, I think if I hadn't decided to play footsie with a wardrobe and nearly break my back, I might have made it. ;) But that is why I set the challenge for the points at 0.5 %, since I think that's sensible, and achievable. I agree about the personal goals - I will certainly set myself one of those. I won't get points for it, but it will give me an extra motivation! :)

Does this mean we can put our goal in our score sheets? Or do you want us to wait for tomorrow after we weight ourselves to set our goals?

Well, if you already have a goal in mind, there is nothing stopping you from putting it in already, and then adding your current weight tomorrow. :)

I know that the fact that I am a PCOS lady has an impact on the rate that I can lose weight... I don't tend to get as much as 1% - but I tend to like to set that as a personal target. I am relieved to think that I can set it and not cost my team points by being pretty certain not to get it...

San's still accepting people so post that score sheet Quercus :)

Right, I am not entirely sure about ~Cory~, since there is no score sheet posted, but I'll assume she's in - so I'm adding ~Cory~ to Team 1, and Mands to team 2 and Quercus to team 3. Confusing myself here, because for some reason the groups are different on my piece of paper than I put them in the threads. Ugh.

Could everybody who hasn't checked in with their teams please do so, so we know who's actually there?

Also, if any team has decided on their name, please let me know so I can change the thread titles, and work on a little surprise. :)

I have a question. We update our score sheets weekly correct? Do we still need to update in our team thread of what we did for exercise, water consumption, etc. or does it all come out in the weekly update? I typically update my diary daily so it's no proble to do both if it's required. :)

I was wondering this as well.

The most important thing is to get it on your score sheet by the end of the week so that you get the points.

You do not normally need to update the thread with the details - but it is a good idea to chat about what you are doing to earn points in the team thread... We all have to work hard if we want to get lots of points and chatting about things tends to have the effect of both reminding people of the tasks that they could do to earn points and encourage them that they are not alone in doing the work... Knowing that you are not alone in what you do can be quite motivating.
