I forget to come here now I'm sorry. I might ask to have this thread moved or I may add a saying to my diary instead. It is a really worthwhile thread I think & I find it personally motivating to look for appropriate responses to various posts, without trying to sound sanctimonious. Any suggestions welcome. In the meant-time I'll add some, pertaining to health as I have been very ill for a week with a bug & health & regaining mine have top priority with me-

Let us all get healthy in 2012. Some tips-

Go for your health checkups
A lot of people tend to ignore their health, either by citing time constraints or because we feel nothing is wrong with us. This year, let us give our body first priority and go for an annual health check up. For women do make time for a breast exam and pap smear and for those with problems make sure you get your important tests, like blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, done from time to time.

Quit smoking
We all have said it an umpteenth amount of times that smoking is bad for health. In 2012, let all the non-smokers and smokers come together to make this world and our body’s smoke free. While non-smokers can lend the necessary support, the smokers need to make a plan to kick the butt.

Protect yourself
Protect yourself from seasonal diseases by getting yourself vaccinated.

Don’t indulge in self medication
This year a lot has been said about anti microbial resistance, which has made most viruses immune to the medicines we usually take. Lets do our bit to stop this by taking drugs and medicines only when prescribed and to desist from self-medication. A wrong medicine can make the situation worse at times, so always buy and have medicines as per your doctors advice.

Exercise for 45 minutes daily
The benefits of exercise are endless from losing weight to increasing your bone density and muscle mass to releasing endorphins and so on. Hence, to keep diseases at bay and to live a healthy lifestyle, all you need to do is reserve 45 minutes of your time for some exercise. Join a gym or a dance class, run, walk or use the stairs… there are many ways to stay fit.

Spend more time outdoors
In this digital world, lets give our eyes and body a break from the computer screens and televisions and venture outdoors. Go for a stroll in the park or start playing an outdoor game. Plan your holidays in the country side or go for a trek or a hike.

Eat healthy
A healthy diet goes a long way. So stop yo-yo dieting and maintain a balanced meal plan. Ensure you get your 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. Cut down on the oil, fried and processed food & alcohol. Keep one "cheat" day during the week so you don’t feel deprived and indulge in something that you love. A little bit of dark chocolate is good for health.

Drink healthy fluids
Thirst often masquerades as hunger and many a times we tend to ignore the need of hydrating ourselves. So, let us promise ourselves this year to drink our 8-12 glasses of water. Try herbal teas, drink less caffeine. For those of you who drink, don’t stop but cut down on the alcohol and limit your intake.

Pamper your skin
Being healthy is not only about feeling good but also looking good. So take care of your skin and hair as much as you would take care of the rest of your body. Pamper your skin with suitable moisturises and treat yourself to a facial or a manicure. Go for a massage.

Sleep for 7 hours
Unbroken, peaceful sleep is important for your mind and body to function well. So get yourself into the routine to sleep for seven hours at night and avoid having alcohol or caffeine around those times along with avoiding those tempting but not so healthy midnight snacks. Stay away from the computer when it's almost bed-time.

Relax
In today’s fast paced life, stress seems to be something everyone is suffering from. It can lead to poor digestion, a weak immune system, high blood pressure and not to mention the mental strain. Drop the load of your shoulders once in a while and de stress with some breathing exercises, meditation or maybe a spa treatment.

Build your support network
Meaningful relationships are the much needed support system we need for mental and spiritual peace. This year lets invest more of our time in developing and nurturing the relationships we share with our family and friends, thus prioritising our heart over our mind.

I'm just "shooting the breeze" for the moment & am cruising into 2012 making gradual improvements to the way I look at life.

Some suggestions, observations & reminders on how to live a happy & rewarding life.

Never underestimate the power of a kind word or deed.

It all Starts With an Egg

12_it_all_starts_with_an_egg.jpg

For many years health conscious people have been told to avoid eggs because they were high in cholesterol. But today research has shown that eggs fit easily into a healthy eating plan and what's more they are packed with good nutrition the whole family can benefit from. Eggs contain one of the highest sources of available protein and provide all the amino acids needed for growth and repair. They are relatively low in fat (5gms per 50g egg). Another benefit of eggs is that they are a source of iron, folate, phosphorus and vitamin B12. So as part of a healthy daily eating plan eggs can play a role in providing the body with good nutrition.

Dietary cholesterol is found naturally in animal foods including meats, dairy foods, eggs, chicken and seafood. Plant foods are cholesterol free. Some people may be more sensitive to the effects of cholesterol in food than others - people who are overweight, have diabetes or a genetic tendency towards high cholesterol levels. Studies looking at foods such as eggs and shellfish have shown that they have little effect on the 'bad' LDL cholesterol, despite the fact that they're naturally cholesterol rich. This is thought to be because of their low saturated fat content. In fact, one recent study of over 100,000 people found that the consumption of up to one egg each day had little effect on heart disease risk in healthy adults. Limiting foods high in saturated fat is more likely to have the most significant benefits for lowering blood cholesterol levels than cutting out eggs. The easiest way to keep blood cholesterol in check is to restrict foods high in saturated fat. These foods include fatty and processed meats, full fat dairy products, takeaway foods and high fat processed snack foods. With the average egg containing only 1.5g of saturated fat, there’s no reason why they can't be part of a heart friendly daily eating plan!

Eggs can add a protein boost to breakfast, lunch or dinner. Eggs are one of the most versatile foods you can cook - they can be added to stir fries, salads, omelettes, poured over steamed vegetables and baked. You are only limited by your imagination with eggs. Eggs are still one of the cheapest sources of protein available. So make eggs part of your healthy eating plan!

Patience! Patience!

10_patience__patience.jpg

Patience is by far the hardest weight loss principle to master. In today's world of instant gratification, no one likes to wait, for anything. It is human nature.

This is a scary thought because people are willing to sacrifice their future for momentary pleasure. Don't do it! Think long term. Think of the end result - a new thin you - and let that be your guiding light. Remember your attitude, the way you look at it, this is not a "diet" it is a new lifestyle, you do not want to hurry your life away, nor do you want it to end!

Don’t start justifying every deviation you make. You will eventually reverse everything you are trying to achieve by not being patient. If, after all your effort - you end up back at the same weight (or even heavier) this will be a crushing blow to your morale. Be patient and be happy to lose weight, this is your new lifestyle!

It is also important to take things one day at a time. Think of here and now. Think only of the day you are doing right now instead of the next 10... You will expend a lot more positive energy in this fashion. One way to do this is to keep yourself busy. Not only will this beat boredom but it will also give you positive energy. Remember this is your lifetime investment. Once it is over, if you are careful, you will never have to do it again. You have been given all the tools you need. It is just plain old-fashioned grit and determination. Many people have done this before you and many will do it in the future... If you have the motivation you will achieve your weight loss goals. Believe in your ability to lose weight and be patient.

Obesity, is it Your Fault?

11_obesity_is_it_your_fault.jpg

An article on the internet said that 89% of Americans believe that individuals are to blame for being overweight and only 5% thought that obesity was due to environment or genetics.
Scientists tell us that obesity is due to 3 primary factors. They are:

- Genetics (a predisposition to being overweight),
- An environmental and energy-rich food supply and a tendency to reduce physical activity, and
- Personal behavior (Most of the world only believes it Is personal behavior).

Compare this to skin cancer or melanoma. For skin cancer (like obesity) we have 3 factors:

- Genetic (your genes give you fair skin),
- Environmental exposure, and
- Personal behaviour (sun blocks and protective clothing).

No one questions a person who contracts skin cancer relating to the above factors. Help and treatment is available. Melanoma is a disease, just like obesity.
Important questions to ask:

- Is obesity among children their fault?
- Is healthcare based on "fault" in other areas?
- Does a fault based approached help or hurt in efforts to solve the problem?

People need help and guidance to understand the problem, not to be judged because of their lack of knowledge. "Obesity is a disease and has little or nothing to do with lack of self discipline." - Dr Rami Cohen.

I have done it before, I can do it again...

I wanted to find this thread easily and this is something that I am currently telling myself...
now I can read the thread at my leisure... :hurray:

Life's a beautiful thing

“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soulmate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about.”
? Marilyn Monroe

“Life is too short to waste any amount of time on wondering what other people think about you. In the first place, if they had better things going on in their lives, they wouldn't have the time to sit around and talk about you. What's important to me is not others' opinions of me, but what's important to me is my opinion of myself.”
~ C. JoyBell C.
