Marsia's Diary

Thanks LaMa, Petal, and Cate! Petal, wow, that's so wonderful you are getting so much walking in, and burning so many calories! I like having a Fitbit - was just out watering the garden this morning, and it counts as exercise, so motivates me to get back out there and do all my projects!

Oh, also, I'm down to 193.4 lbs. Good week!

Well done Marsia . That's happening very quickly for you now. My friend was the same . She had a stone gone in about 6 weeks .

Thanks, Petal. I don't know if I'll ever get down to the max level of carbs I am supposed to have a day (20 g) to be on a keto diet, but I am at around 30-55 g of carbs a day, so I am doing a low carb diet, which seems to be what my body needs. I am starting to feel a lot better - less foggy-brained and I was a little lethargic around the edges, but I am feeling more energetic now. I read that if you do low carbs without being in ketosis, you feel like you are depriving yourself, but I haven't felt that yet.

As long as you feel good and you're getting your nutrients in who cares what you call it?
Thanks LaMa. You are so good at putting things in perspective. I think I have done a low carb diet in the past and it worked, though I get the names all mixed up and that was a couple of decades ago, so I am not positive. Also this low carb diet is very similar to paleo foods, which I already know how to cook with, so this is looking promising, and it's not hard to get all the nutrients in so far. I think I may have found my thing!

Hi Cate and Petal! I am switching to the Fitbit calorie tracker because it has way more of the foods I am eating programmed into it, and it shows the fiber which I can subtract from the carbs to get net carbs, so I think I will use that calorie/exercise counter now instead. So I'll mostly just see you here now. I am so impressed that the Fitbit could tell I was biking for exercise, and love how it only records steps if I am actually pedaling. Thanks you guys for introducing me to it!

Went for a bike ride on my mom's favorite walk along the ocean, and it was so nice because I got her to exercise and got real exercise while riding around and just checking in on her every once in a while. I'd bike some and then find her at a bench and look at the scenery with her and chat a minute and then take off again. It was the perfect workout for us both together.

Hi, Marsia. I think I would be much better eating low carb too & had decided to cut them down. I really only log in my food on MFP on FD's now anyway. That Marsia ride/Mum walk sounds like a lovely thing to do, xoxo

I meant to do a similar walk or bike ride today, but got sidetracked looking up vacation info. Will go dance in place while doing dishes instead. I discovered at lunch that the step tracker counts this, plus I can get my dishes done at the same time!

If you do very low carb, I am finding that you need to have healthy fats (like coconut products and nuts) on hand because otherwise the urge to graze is massive! I hope it works for you as well as it is working for me so far! I clink your avocado and mine together in a low carb toast!

It makes sense you can´t just remove a large group of food items without replacing them with anything. It´s just one of those things where you have to find your way over time.

I am finding that there is a lot of recent research in the nutrition field (new in the last 5 years) about low carb/keto/paleo diets and that there is an optimal amount of protein, fat, and carbs for health and for weight loss, with the more drastic keto best for obese people who need to lose weight fast in order to get out of the danger zone for diabetes, etc. So it looks like it is not as simple as reducing carbs, because too much protein turns into sugars, and too little fat makes you go into starvation mode and also screws with ketones. And then there is the issue of healthy fats vs heart-attack producing fats, and some keto people tend to ignore that part of nutrition and chow down on lots of bacon and processed meats. So if anyone is interested, I could post what I am learning as I go.

I did end up going for a bike ride last night with my daughter as she got her homework done in time for us to ride down a steep hill to a beautiful little road by a stream. Getting back up the steep hill was so hard, and I got my first step badge with the Fitbit. I was so hungry yesterday that I ate almost the right amount of fats and proteins for the low carb diet, but went a little over my calorie goal and carbs goal. Today I make some lime-avacado salad dressing and feast on greens!

I am a little stiff from 3 days of 10,000 steps, and have been drinking tons of water, which made my weight go back up a lot. Can't wait until I get the hang of the new diet and the 5 miles of exercise a day! It does feel good to be this active and eating less carbs though!

You are doing lots of research into keto, Marsia & it is interesting, but I don't think I'll try it. You are doing really well!

Thanks, Cate! I really like trying new things like this if the research about them resonates with me. But I will try to keep a lot of low carb details to myself because they really aren't very interesting if you aren't trying it out, too!

Went to the gym and got my mom back in the pool. Her blood pressure is normal again and I enticed her to start exercising again by showing her Youtube videos of where we are going in Hawaii. I am already dreaming of wearing clothes I saved from before my pregnancy that are my skinny clothes. I hope I can lose the last 35 pounds before next summer! One thing I am really looking forward to is a new bathing suit in a smaller size.

Did about 13,700 steps today, so am getting used to the Fitbit. Had to walk on the treadmill rather than run because I put it on a harder setting, but it felt good to push myself today.

Only ate about 800 calories today and just wasn't hungry for more. I made this really good avacado, lime, yogurt, and cilantro salad dressing and think I will start making dressings from now on. It was so good and fresh, and so cheap to make.

Nice and pleasantly tired now, so I'll say goodnight! Happy tomorrow!!

Losing 35 pounds in 8 months sounds very doable if you manage to stay on track. Be careful with those calories though: a single super low day won´t harm you but don´t let it become a habit.

I was sort of thinking of it as a serendipitous almost fast day, but not really! Normally I try to get at least 1,000 calories, but as I went over calories the day before, I didn't force myself yesterday.

Time has been slipping by lately, and I want to do so many things before rainy season in October. Have to get in gear!

Marsia you have been so busy in such a short while . It sounds like you are getting g on top of the diet plan and the exercise too . It's so satisfying seeing those steps clock up . I always dance about kitchen doing dishes etc . It's surprising what you can do .
35 lbs would be fantastic to lose . I think the way you are going now it will happen for sure so keep up the good work . I aim for that too but more whenever I do it I will but determined I will at some point .

Thanks Petal! I feel like I am finally getting a handle on both the exercise and the food at the same time, something that has always alluded me until now. So that's probably why I am not so focused on other things I need to do lately. Although today I finally unwrapped the wireless headphones I got as a present a long time ago, put on some interesting youtube talks, and caught up on some cleaning. I have done 4 miles of cleaning thus far today. I like that a lot - I usually think of cleaning as a thankless job than no one notices, but it is a new secret weight loss weapon now with the Fitbit! And I get to catch up on things I have been meaning to listen to. I picture us both on different continents dancing away with our dishes together!

I am floored that I really might be able to get to my goal weight before vacation! That would be so incredibly wonderful! I am so over being pear shaped!!!
