Gastric Ballon

Hi

I have been doing some resaerch into the Gastric ballon and wondered if anyone could reccomend a clinc in the Lonodon area and would appreciate some feedback on haveing it done abroad and anyone that can reccomend a clinic abroad.
Thanks for your help in advance

I am seriously thinking about having this done early next year.

Has anyone ever been tempted to not go back and have the ballon out? I mean, I hear people have done this and it just breaks down after a while and it passed out the backside after a while (no polite way of saying that lol). Surely for your money 7 or 8 months is better than 6?

If anyone has any stories about this I'd be interested.

R :)

Gastric Balloon Removal.

Hi All,
I have just booked in to have my balloon taken out in January. I have been told liquids only for THREE days before, which I am horrified at. I am still throwing up as my body never really got used to the balloon. However, I have lost 3.5 stone, so worth it.
I was wondering if anyone else was told 3 days of liquids before removal, or is it just my centre?

DONT DO IT!! I've left an earlier post (read page 17 describes in length) I had my Balloon slip because I left it in to long. I was enormous pain I went to a UK hospital and had it removed and very nearly died. They slice your belly open and then your upper intestinal track where it slips from the stomach and they have to deflate and pull it out. I have a 3 inch scar through my belly because of it. Never ever leave a balloon in longer than 7 months.

Whoever told you it breaks down and you shit it out is talking bollocks the balloon is extremely strong to put up with all the stomach acid it doesnt break down and slip nice and easily through your guts. If your going to do it do it seriously follow the doctors advice to the letter and it'll help. Dont end up in emergency A&E because you didnt have it removed like me in time.

From what my doctor said, you'd really be tempting fate. Sometimes it passes & sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't & you are lucky, it's open surgery. If not lucky, you won't be doing much posting. Ever.

I posted about a new adjustable balloon that is supposed to solve this problem, but posting the link is considered Spam...so do a google search on "adjustable intragastric balloon" if it interests you.

Hi Docnumbers,

I've been posting mainly on a different gastric balloon thread, but just came on here for a little look. Having seen your post, I am also horrified at the thought that I might have to have liquids only for 3 days prior to removal - it's the first i've heard of it, but I have a dietician from the centre who phones me every week, so when she next phones (which should be on Monday, 7th Dec) I'll definitely ask her about it, and get back to you.

My appetite is certainly a lot less with the balloon in place, but I don't think I could cope for 3 days without solid food!!!:eek::eek:

By the way, congratulations on your 3.5 stone weight loss - that's brilliant! My balloon isn't due out till March; I've lost just over 2 stone up to now.:)

Me again,

Following on from my last post - I asked my nutritionist about the "liquids only" for 3 days before the balloon comes out, and she said it's true!
Docnumbers, I should have asked before - are you with the National Obesity surgery Centre?? (I am). I would still be interested to know whether people who had their balloons done by other companies are given this advice too??
They obviously like to keep that bit quiet until the last minute! I really think it should have been mentioned before we had the proceedure done!! Oh well, will just have to get on with it (when the time comes) I suppose.

I had a balloon fitted through endoscope on Christmas day and I need some support on the lonely weight loss journey

I have managed to lose 20llbs in 2 weeks which is unbeleivable for me! but dont feel any different in size - This is possibley due to the balloon making my stomach feel bloated.

Get in touch if you have a balloon now or in the past - I would love to hear from any motivational stories.

Speak soon

Angela:)

Angela, i have not had mine done yet - i will be doing it on the 14th of january...

i have read through hundreds of forums - From what i have read it is really common to have bloating.

They say that tea helps ?

That is amazing

hi all

Thanks cuddlymum for your reply.
I am with NOSC aswell. I have had few calls with them, and when i signed up I was under the illusion that they had psychologists on board. I must have had them confused with someone else, because I got a telling off for eating things I shouldn't. I have not been able to stick to the plan and have thrown up nearly everyday. Now I only have a couple of weeks to go and they seem worried that I am still throwing up. I think the truth is that I never got used to having it in my body and the antiacids stop the digestion of foods I shouldnt be having.
I just hope I havent become bulimic.
We will soon find out after the 9th when it finally comes out. I cant wait/weight hehe I have lost 4 stone.
I am determined to keep the weight off and have decided to treat myself to a personal trainer.
In hindsight I would have gone to Prague Beauty had I known about it.... or the firm that is doing the air filled balloon which causes less vomiting.
I will be spending xmas with my husband only so I dont have to worry about not drinking. In fact, I got quite drunk the other night and the hangover wasnt half as bad because my stomach just felt like it did a month after insertion. I am a bad girl, but if i didnt have a problem with food, I wouldnt be obese.
Take care and good luck with the rest of your journey,
Louise

balloon removal/next step

Hi Docnumbers,

Just wanted to say, I'd be really interested to know how you get on with having the balloon removed, and what happens after that. Have you been given the list of "liquids" for the last 3 days yet?? (I'd like to know what exactly you're allowed during that time!).

Sorry to hear that you've had a difficult time with the balloon in place, but you must be pleased with your weight loss! Sorry to hear that you were told off for eating the wrong things - I've also eaten things that I shouldn't, but I've kept quiet about it usually! (although they knew about my Christmas night out recently, & seemed OK about that, as a one-off).

Anyway, good luck for the removal, and do let us know how it goes! :seeya:

Balloon Removal Liquid Diet

Hi Cuddlymum

The liquid diet 3 days before removal is as follows:

the first 24 hours can include soup tea coffee with milk, fruit juice and smooth yoghurt.
For 48 immediately prior to the procedure, drink only clear liquids such as consumme, tea and coffee without milk, oxo, bovril and water.

For 6 hours before procedure, it is nil by mouth, but recommended to drink fizzy coke immediately before this to give the balloon a final clean.

Hope that is informative. I have found some consumme in waitrose, which doesnt look that appetising LOL Cant wait

Louise

Thanks for info

Hi Louise!

Thanks for getting back to me regarding the liquid diet - it's really useful to have an idea what to expect, as the NOSC never seem to give you much information in advance.

It will be a grim 3 days trying to stick to that:(, but at least we know it's the last lap!!

Will be thinking of you on the 9th! Let me know if you have any ill-effects after the removal (hopefully not! Surely it can't be anything like as unpleasant - afterwards - as having it put in?!).

All the Best to you xx :waving:

Hi - just to let you know - I asked about the preparation In Prague for having the balloon taken out and they've given me written instructions saying that I need to fast on liquids for 24 hours before the procedure.

Hi, Madharri123!

I sent you a reply on the other balloon thread yesterday, but I've just spotted your post on here about fasting on liquids for 24hrs before removal - that sounds a bit more achievable than 3 days!! You would think it would be the same, whichever company did the procedure - but obviously not, which is interesting to know! ;)

Thanks for sharing this info! x :seeya:

My experience deciding on the Gastric Balloon

Hi, I am having my balloon fitted on 17th January. 8 days time. I did lots of research before making my decision and you do have to be very careful with who you go with.

I decided on the balloon instead of the band.

I saw two Doctors and spoke to numerous people.

The first doctor told me that he would do the balloon but he suggested the sleeve. He explained that it involved cutting away 3/4 of my stomach. I weigh 100kgs and I am 5'5. The cost of this surgery is 3 to 4 times higher than the balloon.

The second place I spoke to said "Oh yeah people like the balloon because after the insertion you can go about your day as normal like nothing has happened." What???

The final place I spoke to was very upfront about what I was putting myself in for. The Doctor said for me the only option would be the balloon or the band. Not bypass or sleeve surgery. I decided to go for it with this provider. They were honest about everything. Saying I would feel like death warmed over for at least 3 days and quite possible longer.

I will be on anti acids for the entire 6 months I will have a check up every month and a monthly meeting with a dietitian every month the balloon is in, as well as access to the dietitian anytime during the 6 month period by phone. 24 hour emergency hotline.

They made it clear to me that the amount of weight loss expected anywhere from 1-1/2 stones to 5 stones depending on my commitment to diet and exercise. That is a big difference so I am determine to do this properly as I want to lose 4 stones in total but I am very nervous and a bit scared, but also very excited.

So if you are considering the balloon stay strong and don't let anyone steer you in a direction that you may not want to go. I'll keep everyone posted about how I am getting on with it!

Hi Suerena,

Good luck for your balloon procedure in a few days' time! :) You've obviously done a lot of research before booking it, and it sounds like you've made a good choice.

Welcome to the forum, by the way - I've found a lot of support and encouragement on here. I also post on another thread ("Gastric balloon fitted 5 days ago...etc) which you may like to look at, as there are quite a few newbies on there.

Anyway, look forward to hearing how you get on! x :seeya:

Thanks

Thank you Cuddlymom,

I am sure I have the right provider finally, but it did seems like everyone I approached at first just wanted to see how much money they could get out of me by trying to get me to go for something I didn't want, which was a real downer. I will post after my procedure next week on the other thread which I found and have booked marked. It does seem to be a more positive thread and we all need to be and stay as positive as possible. :hurray:

Cheers,
Suerena
