Now a fellow ballooner

Just got back from Prague late last night after having my balloon inserted on Thurs at New You in Prague.

Couple of things, whilst the clinic was great and friendly i am a little dissapointed with the litertature i was sent home with, no diet sheets or do's and dont's sheets pretty much left to it.
I was under the impression that i had to stick to a liquid diet for the first few weeks but they were trying to feed me toast an yoghurt the following day.
Was sick initially the first night after insertion but just feel queezy now with stomach cramps that come and go in waves,.

after getting over the initial shock of how much i actually weighted, which i have avoided over the last few years and i am sad to say i have reached 16.5 stone that almost brought me t tears i am more determined than ever to loose this weight, my only reservation is that i don't feel as i thought i would with the balloon, when i say that i came home last night and had a chicken & sweetcorn soup (minus the sweetcorn as i thought that would he hard to digest) and my expectation where that i would only be able to manage a few mouthfulls but I pretty much ate most of with which in fairness was broth didnt feel eceptionally full but felt ok other than the wave of pain and a little nausius.
Have other felt like this ??

I can be a little impatient especially as i am desperate to loose this weight and i am hopimg to see results, can you guys share with me any diet tips that will help, should i be on a liquid diet initially?? i really dont know what i should be doing or what to expect.

Another question is when can i start exercising after the insertion?

Thanks in advance for all your responses on this really feeling a little low at the moment after the initial realisation.

Hi Ladyt:),

Interesting to hear about your experience in Prague. It does seem as though you should have been given some sort of guidelines/diet to follow - no wonder you feel a bit lost!:(

As regards a liquid diet - I really only did that for the first few days, but I had difficulty establishing what portion sizes of food I needed to eat (sometimes I would feel OK at the time I was eating, but then I'd feel really over-full afterwards, and the discomfort could last for hours; all night sometimes!). The National Obsesity surgery Centre gives patients a fairly strict diet sheet to follow - in the first phase, it's stuff like scrambled eggs, bacon, chicken, fish, mince (which hasn't really agreed with me very well since I've had the balloon in!), plus certain fruits & veg. No carbs or dairy (apart form skimmed milk) to begin with, although they are re-introduced gradually. But I think the aim of that is to make the weight loss as good as possible - not so much that the foods aren't compatible with the balloon.

As regards exercise, I was told I could start to do that after the first couple of weeks - although I still felt too rough at that stage to do it! But you might be different. I would try something fairly gentle to begin with though, & see how you get on.

Don't be too hard on yourself about weighing more than you expected. I'm sure that's a fairly average starting weight for a ballooner (or certainly within the "average range") and at least you are now doing something about it!;). This might sound daft, but feeling so fed up about your weight might be more of a motivation for you to acheive a really great weight loss!:biggrinjester:

Anyway, good luck for the rest of your balloon experience! Keep us updated x:seeya:

fellow ballooner

Hi Cuddlymum many thanks for you reply back to me i really do appreciate it, i finally got a diet sheet (via email yesterday almost a week after the insertion) so i know have some direction, i had a bad day the other day as i stood on the scales and had not lost any weight at all (4 days after the insertion) and i was really distraught know i was beimg a bit to eager but curiosty got the better of me.:iamwithstupid:

Day 6 of the insertion
After breaking down in tears my partner talked some sense into me at, at the moment i am eatimg Yoghurt and soup but rea;ly struggling with the discomfort after i eat and this sometimes lasts for hours, does this mean i am eating tooo much i am currently eating a 1/4 of what i used to eat, not been sick but the nasaue :ack2:stays will be all day which is irritating as i constantly feel sick and i have not been for a number 2 for over a week now.

Have an appointment with my tomorrow so maybe he an suggest a few things, think i will feel alot better once i start to see the weight coming off really feel lik i should be excercising to assist it but just dont have the strength at the moment as i feel really weak.

Am struggling abit with my food demons as i thonk about food 24/7 is this normal, i am really missing all the bad/nice things that i used to eat but have to keep reminding myself that that is how i got here.

I am trying to stay positive and i look forward to buying new clothes LOL that is mainly what is keeping me going at the moment

Thats enough ranting from me

Hi again Ladyt,

Oh dear, sounds like you are having a rough time :angelsad2: - I also felt really rotten & fed-up to begin with, it does get better eventually though!

I think I know what you mean about missing the foods you used to eat - even though I didn't feel physically hungry at first, I just felt as though there was big chunk missing from my life; or like my greatest pleasure had been taken away, & I missed it! It's not easy, is it?

I understand you must have been disappointed at not losing weight after 4 days. I didn't weigh myself as early on as that, but when I eventually did (after about 9 days I think) I'd only lost a couple of pounds - however, I think I lost 4 pounds the week after that, & then I lost something every week (usually 2 to 3 pounds) up until Xmas (had the balloon in at the end of Sept) - so I'm sure your weight loss will get going eventually.;)

Hope your appointment goes well, & that you get some helpful advice. Also, glad to hear that you received a diet sheet eventually!! (better late than never, eh?):rotflmao:

Take care, & catch you again soon x :seeya:

HI everyone, I have just joined this forum!! Hi to all.
Have just decided that I am going to have the Balloon and feeling nervous but positive that this will be right for me get back to how I would like to look and feel. Look forward to reading more of your successful posts!! XXX

I Hope your well!! I
have decided to go ahead with the gastric balloon and would love for you to share some of your journey???

Hi Becky007,

Welcome to the forum! :) Have you fixed a date yet for your balloon insertion? Anyway, good luck with it, whenever it happens - let us know how you get on!

I had mine put in at the end of September '09, so I haven't got too much longer to go. You may want to have a look at some of my old posts - quite a lot of them are on a different thread ("Gastric balloon fitted 5 days ago, chatters wanted"...etc) although it wasn't me who started the thread originally! I've been pleased with the results so far - I've lost almost 3 stone (I was doing great till Christmas, but the festive season knocked me off balance a bit, & I've found it hard to get going again! The weight is still coming off, but not as quickly :(). I have to say though, that I would never have managed this weight loss without the balloon.

It can be very tough in the first few weeks, but I feel it's been worth it.

Anyway, All the best to you!

Cuddlymum x :waving:

New Ballooner

Day 10 of the baloon insertion and i am in a better place (cuddly Mum thanks for all yoir supportive words) weighed myself and i have lost 7lb:party: really pleased and this has lifted me abot hopefully will loose some more next week. still struggling with whatto east at the moment i am on a diet of soup and yoghury but i am still craving that bad foods which has been a real struggle as the rest of the family are still eating them and i have to watch and smelll LOL It has not helped that it is also the time of the month and normally i scoff loads of sweet things to give me a boost that has been really hard as i have not been able to do that this time so i have been feeling really weak at the moment.

not sure what size portion to eat either should i be focusing on the portions, went to nandos for a meal on Saturday night and had a slaed with chicken didnt manage to eat all of it but felt guilty afterwards as i really dont know what i should or should not be eating sooo soon after the insertion what do you guys eat.

Still getting the discomfort (mainly at night) but it is bearable apart from that feeling alot better than i thought i would be have really geared myself up for the worst. Looking forward to starting at the Gym next week as my 2 weeks will be up feel that i need to be doing something to help the weight loss along

will kepp you all posted as to how i do at my next weigh in

Hi everyone, I have been following this site for about 4 months now, and researched alot about the baloon and had the procedure done on the 15th January. I slept for 3 days lol only threw up twice so I breezed through it quite well, could only sip water for the first 3 days. I have lost 7 kilos now yayyyyy and now will start the exercising. The dietician is great. I am in Melbourne Australia, so if there is anyone who needs help with deciding to get one or where to go please ask. First when I went for my intial consultation the dr said my bm was to high and it wont work ect and I said "how do you know" he said I know then again I said "how do you know" (he wanted me to have lapband) I said no then he said ok you can have the procedure. I see the life coach and Exercise Lady next week so looking forward to that.
The only side effects I am getting now is burping and also feeling the balloon move in waves thats the only way I can describe it.

Easter Ballooning (Hopefully)

Hi Everyone

I hopefully will have my balloon in by Easter. After a lot of research and speaking with a friend who got one in October I decided to go ahead. I live in Australia and it is not that common here although I have noticed advertisements in a couple of magazines over the last couple of months. My doctor is a fan of lap banding, but the cost and procedure don’t really appeal to me. I want the balloon to be the kick start for my new life.

I had my appointment with the surgeon this week and am booked in for my upper endoscopy and nutritionist appointment so that when I go back to see him in early March it should be all okay to set a date for the op.

So over the next month I am going to focus on making better food choices and getting back into a gym routine to give me a head start.

I am 32 and at the moment I am 140kg,:blush5: I am never going to weigh this much again. The surgeon said that if all goes well and I make the lifestyle changes required with the balloon I should be aiming for 110-115kg in the six months with the balloon in. Ultimately I would like to initially be under 100kg and long term somewhere between 80-90kg. I am 174cm tall and cant really imagine me weighing that or less.

Will let you know how I go with the appointments:)

Wishing you well - and remember the basics

Good luck with the balloon procedure! Remember, whether it be the balloon, bariatric or lap banding, these are mere tools to help you achieve your weight goals. These are not quick fixes or magic bullets. At the end of the day, the fundamentals of weight management, ie eat better, move more will still be vital to your health.

I have personally seen many patients who had such procedures done to fast-track their goal attainment, only to be disappointed when they realised that the onus of making life changes lies squarely and inescapably on their lap.

I hope the procedure will act as a kick-start for you and you will enjoy the journey of transformation!

Balloon inserted tomorrow.

After careful consideration (including trawling this blog) I am scheduled to have the gastric balloon inserted tomorrow morning.
Only my partner and a dear friend knows about my decision so I feel quite comforted that I can talk to others that have had the same experience on here.

I'm 96kgs and wish to lose 25kgs (30kgs would be amazing). I exercise a lot but a really struggle with portion sizes, struggle to feel full and also an emotional/bored eater but generally I eat and drink out way too much and have too much of a good time. It's time to reel it in unfortunately. After being diagnosed with POCS, the party is over.

So I will report back later this week and hopefully haven't had to drive the porcelain bus too much.
Feel free to offer me some support and advice, it will be greatly appreciated.
Bye for now.

Had the balloon inserted on Valentine's day - very romantic, especially after BF bought me a box of chocolates! (only ate 3...)

Anyway, feeling like pants now, have thrown up so much on the first day, less on the second but had awful acid reflux last night so have woken bruised and sad today.

I really need to be back on my feet for work next week so any advice on a swifter settling in time will be much appreciated. So far I am drinking water and have had some slim-fast shake. I really don't feel like eating and I have been amazed some people are eating food in the first days.

I have 20 KG to lose and have given up alcohol to work with the balloon. It has been my downfall in the past couple of years so good opportunity to feel so ill I don't want anything to tipple.

Any advice from first/second weekers and a diet buddy would be most welcome.

S.

Hi all

Just joined this site, i had the gastric balloon fitted on the 12th February in Prague, one of the worst experiences I have ever been through on my own, but on a positive side it is now 5 days down the road and im feeling loads better and already 7lb down, must say the service and the place I stayed in was fantastic though and would recommend them to anyone, just take someone with you even if its just for a cuddle

Good to hear you are feeling better already Cazamu - I simply feel rubbish all the time - can't sit, stand, lie down for more than a few minutes so prowling round the house burping:puke: and wingeing.... Had mine on the 14th so still early days and likewise, down half a stone but not loving the process....

only relief is when i throw up...

Have tried ginger tea, mint tea, gaviscon and the box of pharmaceuticals I left the hospital with. Aaargh.

Not sure how I will cope going back to work PLUS I have job interviews next week if I feel this rough.

If you want to email me, and I would sure appreciate the support, would love to do so.

Sheley

sssss1

Awww the first 4 days are terrible but the 5th day i suddenly started feeling loads better and today is my best day yet although I totally lost my voice, im sure by tomorrow you will be feeling better, fingers crossed, where did you get yours done??

Has anyone else experienced Laryngitus in the 1st couple of weeks, i have it but no pain or soreness just no voice, heard it can be caused by acid reflux but have only had heartburn once so far,

Hiya Cazamu.

Yep - slightly less prowling round the house today and have discovered windeze which seems to take the edge off the burps which were smelling revoltingly eggy and completely yuck.

I had mine done at the Chelsfield hospital by the Hospital Group. I had low expectations so no surprises regarding no aftercare beyond a bag of medicines and a phone call after 2 days to ask if I was OK. I have already done my diet plan research and gone for a slim-fast/innocent smoothie combo now I can actually keep something down.
Not sure I will ever feel like eating again though as even after a small liquid drink I feel like I have been punched quite hard in the stomach!

the good news is I am down half a stone from 80Kg to 76.6 KG (so hard to lose, - so easy to wave at as you fly past on the scales on the way up....)

I am still dreading work on Tuesday which is looming ever nearer as I am really tired and don't know how to sit still for a minute as can't get comfortable.

My 2 kids are coming back from my mums where they have been for half term so will also have lots of explaining to do.... They spotted the shakes before I went in and cracked open all the chocolate flavour ones - came home and found them covered from head to toe in slim-fast... little loves.

How did you cope on the journey home from Pargue? I can't imagine doing any travel after the procedure - and on easy-jet, - shoot me.
