From alpha testing to the QUERCUS 200

Yeah breakfast and lunch are never a problem unless I eat lunch in the field. Usually it's dinner or after dinner snacking that kills me. If I wait too late for dinner I eat big and if I eat too early I get hungry before bed. I've drank a lot of water today and I'll do well on calories. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I dropped last week right before.

You want your cats to eat quicker...I need my dog to slow down! cup of food gone in less than a minute, sometimes 2.

Great pics Mandy!!

Q: You are doing good, water is great! Not only keeps your appetite down to stick to your calorie goals but is also good for you :)

Caught a possum in the trap last night and let him go as he isn't the culprit. Fed the cats directly under a light and tried to come out a few times and managed to fed just them 2 nights in a row. The possum was understandably a little irritated with me and I got lots of hissing as I set him free.

I didn't weigh this morning, but I've done well with calories, water, and walking. The msoquitos are so terrible right now. I can't wait for a frost, but it's rather warm at the moment.

I've only had one opossum in our yard, that I've seen, they're very unique looking animals. I wouldn't call them cute or ugly, but many they're different looking! Glad you let him go. :)

I hate mosquitos! Thankfully ours are pretty much gone now. We've been getting some cold temps at night. We shouldn't be seeing many of them now until next spring.

The area I live in is called possum hollow and is very close to a community that has a possum festival that includes BBQ possum. I've never been, but I assume that anything that is slow, has poor eyesight and hearing, and no particularly fearsome defenses must taste terrible. No one here uses opossum. It's either possum or Didelphis virginiana at this job. They are rather interestingf creatures as they are marsupials and have prehensile tails. They used to make fur coats from them and their grease was used as a chest rub for congestion. I'll stick to gortex and vapo rub myself.

Had a lovely day in the field, but the terrain was rough and slick. I was walking in a creek bed full of hog and coyote tracks and I realized that with the slick clay vertical banks that running into them might have been bad. That didn't happen as a lazy mud turtle was all I saw. I did see some wild baby mallard ducks on a small lake which was neat. I ran into an old timer out in the woods and he spun a couple of yarns and managed to stretch my field work out a bit for me. He had a white beard that covered most of the bib of his overalls, he drove up to us on a tractor, and picked his teeth with a pocket knife to get the chewing tobacco out.

I ate a large late lunch, but it was worth it and I will eat a light dinner to stay close on calories. I ate alligator at a Cajun place near the survey sight. Yummy! I worked a survey that abutted an alligator farm once and the owner told me to let him know if I noticed any holes in his fence. I did not find that amusing.

Eeeewww... don't think I'd ever be able to stomach BBQ opossum. Ick!!

I've heard that alligator tastes like chicken. Would you say that's true?

I hope your day went well today. :)

Chicken is the go to description for any odd whitish meat. Alligator tastes a lot more like frog legs or rattlesnake. I'm sure that helps a lot. It is mild and has a quality somewhat like a cross between dark and white meat chicken I suppose, but it is chewier and has a fish-like flavor (not that it's fishy) that I have found in every reptile and amphibian I've eaten that is absent in chicken.

In case you're curious the are all of the reptiles and amphibian I've eaten:
bullfrog
softshell turtle
snapping turtle
alligator snapping turtle (when I was a child before they were a protected species in TX)
western diamondback rattlesnake
Timber rattlesnake (when I was a child before they were a protected species in TX)
alligator

Of those the alligator is the only one I did not take from the wild. Yes, I'm quite the culinary redneck.

I haven't weighed this week, but I have struggled with my diet and have let the rain be an excuse not to exercise. I ate very healthy last night and for breakfast and lunch today.

If anyone knows a reputable source for tempeh culture please let me know. If I had access to tempeh all the time I would make it my primary protein source. It is so yummy. I have to go to a specific store that doesn't always have it and they charge a ridiculous amount. It's mold fermented soybeans for those wondering and it is as yummy as it sounds terrible.

Boy you're certainly one to explore different foods. I'm not nearly as fond of experimenting. I like chicken, turkey, beef, and pork. LOL That's about it for meats. :)

Are there any exercises you can do indoors while it's raining? Something is better than nothing. Keep eating healthy, it'll all add up in the end.

I can't help with the tempeh culture. Sorry! :(

Yeah I've certainly tried a lot! Jellyfish, flying fish roe, grasshoppers, ants, fritas de maguey (fried maggots), and scorpions are some of the less traditional fare that come to mind. As far as "normal" meats done weirdly I've had Parisa which is a raw hamburger dish. Yummy! I also eat wild vegetables and fruits in the wild.

I did some dumbell exercises last night. I feel pretty crummy today. Sinus headache, really bad heartburn/sour stomach, intestinal difficulties, and my back is sore from the tossing and turning and lack of sleep trhat the rest brought me. I'm off into the field and hopefully that will go all right.

Wow... lol... I'm not nearly as brave as you when it comes to trying new things. I have had raw hamburger though which I thought was ok. My grandfather used to eat it a lot with saltine crackers. He also ate raw bacon, but I didn't try that.

I've had a sore throat since yesterday and today my nose is stuffed up. I'm wondering if I might have a sinus infection too. It's been a couple of years since I had one, but it feels as I remember it. I hope as your day goes on you feel better.

Thanks Mandy! My stomach feels better today, but my back is still sore. I'm so sleepy today that I seriously considered calling in, but instead I will drink a lot of coffee and hope the stomach is okay with it.

Yikes! I'm so plain with meat, raw hamburger...ooohh,
Hubby's mum cooked pigeon once and I was so shocked that I sounded rude "omg I can't eat pigeon!"
My limits on meat is all in my head. Beef = meat, chicken = meat, porc = meat, rabbit = furry cute animal, duck = birds I feed, bugs are just gross etc

You are definitely brave.

LOL! My thoughts exactly! Except for religious purposes I don't eat Pork. Chicken, Beef and Turkey. Occasionally lamb and I have eaten quail before. Not a big seafood fan. But yeah bugs are gross, ducks are not people food and neither are rabbits. Even with beef and chicken and turkey I do not think of the animal while eating it or I just can't do it.

I have a bag full of dove breasts that a friend gave to me thawing in my fridge now. I also added a squirrel to the mix and I will probably grill them in a day or 2 depending on how quickly they thaw. I imagine pigeon would be like dove (delicious). Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or an omnivore, something must die in order for you to live. I grew up hunting, fishing, and raising chickens and rabbits. I learned from an early age that meat is a living breathing thing before you eat it regardless of the kind.

Every meat you eat comes from a living creature that experiences pain and fear. Hunting or raising an animal for meat makes that reality plain. Accepting the responsibility of making a creature's death as humane as possible and making the effort to butcher the animal with your own hands gives you the ability to have control over what you put into your body. It allows you to appreciate the brevity and fragility of life as well as the necessity of death to support life.

That being said I realize most people don't have the opportunity to experience their food as directly as this and that many who have opportunity to do so choose not to. I would also like to point out that despite my adventurousness with trying different foods, I eat very little meat. The alligator on the 14th was my last meat and an exception made from my general rule of only eating wild game. Egg and cheese are the only animal products I've had since the 14th (unless I've forgotten something). I've had tofu, tempeh, nuts, and beans aside from egg and cheese for protein.

I amazingly can still keep from losing weight. I eat way too much bread, cheese, chips, and crackers. I've done really well so far today with eggs and soy sausage fro breakfast and tofu/veggie pho for lunch. Maybe dove for dinner?

tl/dr Sure I eat weird stuff, but not that much of it and I give it a lot of thought.

I wish I was more willing to try new things, but I just can't try some things. It's weird because I tend to get bored quickly yet my diet is pretty repetitive and I'm ok with it on most days. Occasionally I do get bored and try to mix it up though. :)

Sorry to hear that your weight is up. I know we all hate counting calories, but sometimes we have to just to make sure we're not over doing it. Maybe go back to square one for a couple of weeks with counting to see if that helps? I'm sure you'll get there, it'll just take some time. :)

I've gotten conflicting reports on the taste of Javelina/Peccary, with one guy just sort of wincing and shaking his head and the other saying it tasted "alright." Apparently, despite their similarity in appearance to hogs, they are not particularly similar taste wise.

Another Arizona creature that I suppose could be eaten is a roadrunner, though you'd need a lot of them for a meal.

I've never had peccary/javelina. What we have is feral pigs and they are a mix of domestic breeds gone feral and Russian boar. They are rather tasty. It's not legal to eat a road runner, but I imagine it would taste fine. Almost all non-game birds have legal protection of some sort and even the game birds have legal regulation. Western diamondback shouldn't be hard to come by.

I just got back from my first overnight in a while. I didn't eat great, but I did better than usual for sure. I also covered a lot of ground and worked a little over 12 hours yesterday. Hopefully my late lunch will make for a light dinner.

The back is feeling pretty good still which is a relief.

Well then Wile E. Coyote would be in some real trouble if he ever managed to be successful.
