Covid-19 ... coronavirus ... thoughts?

on the lighter side... if you ever played golf, you will probably enjoy this even more.
COVID-19 temporary rule changes for SD public courses.
On Course
  • Bunker rakes, ball washers and benches have been removed
  • Cups are raised slightly to allow for no-touch retrieval of golf balls
  • Flagsticks must remain in the cups at all times
  • That's been the case here for a while. Max 2 on each hole, keeping their social distance, no comps, no exchanging or marking one another's card. It actually works ok, even though it sounds a bit bonkers. Better than no golf at all.
is there nothing this egomaniac won't do to quell voices that oppose his political views at the expense of lives now...?
Apparently not

good news... it doesn't appear to be getting exponentially worse, ...for now.
bad news... currently locked into a fairly consistent linear increase, some non-essential businesses have begun to open up...

Most everything except for schools and churches have reopened here. This weekend movie theaters were back in business and restaurants have been for a couple of weeks. My gym has been open for a couple of weeks and is restarting exercise classes Tuesday. I have also noticed that as this happens social distancing is breaking down a little. I sure hope its all for the best.

Most everything except for schools and churches have reopened here.

Places are slowly reopening here, schools are partly open with the remaining year groups going back next week, outdoor bootcamp type classes are open for 10 people or less and one on one personal training is open. Travel distances have increased and the ability to visit the homes of others with a restriction of 5 members of one household being able to visit another house. State borders are still closed and we have 13 active cases in the state looking at today's numbers. I have noticed a lot of people ignoring social distancing at the supermarket etc.

first day i walked down to the ocean in about a month. a lot more people out than the last time i was down there, but still a fraction of what the beach should look like on a beautiful spring day. you could walk along the beach, but no gathering and no sitting down, though i got away chatting with a surfer who was just coming off the beach for a few minutes. you couldn't go inside any store without a mask, but only a few people were wearing one outside, though most people made an effort to put as much distance as they could from me when passing. maybe one out of 5 people returned a smile and a socially distant, "hi." many displayed a tunnel-visioned non-acknowledgement perhaps to avoid any interaction.

too late...?

preparing for the worst case is sometimes prudent, but when the reports started coming out that "SOME" tests have discovered "SOME" virus particles can survive UP TO 3+ days on a surface, i could see the writing on the wall. now EVERYONE will assume ALL surfaces that have been touched by ANYONE will be contaminated.

*sigh*

CDC has finally backed off and admitted that the chances of picking up the virus from touching a surface is MINIMAL.

i fear it is too late to take that back.
overcleaning with disinfectant will likely continue.

grocery shopping again this morning, the shelves are starting to look pre-pandemic normal. lots of paper products, even some brand names again. aside from the still high... maybe getting higher... meat prices there were no completely empty sections that seemed normal a month ago (soup, frozen veg, etc).

over the past few months i've come to realize that i have more acquaintances than friends. unfortunately i probably will not find out about many locals who may have passed until the bars open up again. with the senior average age of my live steamers club, it has been good to hear all those friends are still alive and kickin'... so far.

i've been burned before by keeping my fingers crossed, but ZERO deaths in the past 3 days in the county; overall stats are down.

antibody tests are said to be less than 50% effective...(!)
wouldn't that be the very definition of useless?

some casino's are opening up... only slot machines and video poker.

no backjack, no bars, no buffets... and, oh yeah... no me... !

i wish i could say things are looking better. the past week as seen a little less activity, but we're still far from getting this under control and this is in a city that isn't protesting the shutdown (much) and as far as i can see, most people out shopping are following the rules (mask + distance)...

coronagraph 03a.jpg

last four week stats... i wish i knew where all the new cases are coming from. to put the hospital total in perspective, there are 91 hospitals in the county so i doubt if any one is getting swamped, but the total seems to be relentlessly growing. there are 8000 hospital beds including 2500 ICU. well under any limits .... for now.

playing around with Excel spreadsheet charts, these look good, but i wonder if they have much statistical meaning as testing over time has certainly changed though still not even close to being comprehensive...

SDCV - D2D.jpg

again.... only one county in California.

the past 6 weeks in SD county ...

coronagraph 03b.jpg

since testing is still erratic and not very comprehensive, all this is showing me (upper graph) is that whatever the % or rate, the number of cases is not showing a decrease or an increase... average day has been about 120 new cases and holding.

the bottom graph shows the number of new hospitalizations and new ICU cases (also taking into account those cases resolved one way or the other)... and the number of deaths daily... the other way. this has shown a change as in the first 3 weeks, there were only 4 days when the change was less than 15 new, however, in the past 3 weeks, there were only 4 days where the change was more than 15. there have even been 4-5 days with zero or only one death.

unfortunately there is always going to be a lag between social distancing standards being relaxed and the spread increasing substantially.... (say, that sounds a little like dieting... :) ...). the gains made over the past 3 weeks may be erased if the recent relaxing of rules continues. we'll see.
on a positive note... actual brand name paper products on the store shelves this morning...

yesterday was the highest single day positive test result in the county (335).
seven of the past nine days have been in the top 10.

three months ago, NYC was a few days away from disaster.
this time it's half the country.

The news is full of packed beaches and people worrying about the impact on the virus.
I swear that English people go crazy when they see a glimpse of the sun.
We will only be saved if the weather returns to the predicted rain this weekend.

We are shielding my mother so we stay away from the outside world after our early morning walks.
We have shopping delivered once a week and buy things using postal deliveries.

Things are slowly opening up - and I am hoping for driving lessons as soon as that happens (and I will wear a mask and take a risk for that).
Generally we will stay locked down until things improve from where they are.
