The importance of "self-care"

The reality is that in being kind to yourself and treating yourself well
by eating healthy and nutritious foods, enjoying exercise and activity,
giving yourself a good night's sleep and time to relax,
and finding a balance between fulfilling work and friendship,
your life and sense of wellbeing will improve along with your weight.
If you focus on self-care, positive change will be the inevitable result.
Our thoughts have an enormous impact on our feelings which,in turn, affect our behaviour.
By understanding this powerful cycle, you start to gain the ability
to make important and lasting changes in your life.

Hi Everyone

I feel like a bit of a Cohen-Forum-fraudster because I'm not losing weight at the same pace as most of you!!

Have any of you experienced no weight loss for a few weeks then a sudden drop on the scales? I stayed at 68kgs for four weeks and now I've lost 1.5kgs in less than two days.

I'd really like to lose another three before 3 October as that would be 12 kilos in 12 weeks. Only problem - I've got a hen's day next Friday and a wedding on the Saturday!! Wish me luck!!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Fishy :)

I said the same thing in another post i wrote today, dont worry about the weight stopping for a little while then picking back up again.. this happens and its happening to me as we speak.. I know it can be extreamly annoying!!!

But it will pick up, give your body time to catch up! It'll get there :)

Take care everyone, have a great weekend!!!

P.S- Netski- I can begin to imagin what it will feel like when this journey is over for you and you are on your own in the world of "food".. its so excitting, and im very excitted for you! WELL DONE! You've made it, im so proud of you, you look amazing! x

First Day

well, so far so good except that I would kill for a snickers right now! and I never ate that much bad stuff anyway, isn't funny how we always want what we can't have. I have got a bit of a headache and while my food portions are somewhat reasonable, after time I get grumpy and hungry.

This is all standable however. What is bugging me is the weighing- already! I weighed my meals for the next 3days and it took me a good 45mins! and what about the yogurt that gets left unscrapped out of the bowl? is that going to impact things? I'm finding it hard! I had a piece of meat plus a half a fingertip sized smigen of meat to make up the portion size! aahhh! am I just ultra nazi? does give or take a gram not matter hugely?

Fatgirl would love to know how your first day/s are panning out

Lick the dish!

Hi Mermaid Sister

I became very adept at putting just about everything on a flat plate and on the way from the table to the sink I would lick the dish!

To those of you who think this program is slow:

This is why monthly weighing is recommended, so that we don't become discouraged when the scales don't magically move every day. Of course they won't.

However, although my loss was slow - 25 kilos over 20 weeks - remember that if you suddenly lose the weight what about your skin?

It will hang off you like an empty bag. Not a good look!!!

My program was designed for me, yours is designed for you. At my age (56) I am grateful that progress was slow. My skin is in good condition, I lost over 1 metre in overall measurements, I don't need surgery to remove bags under my arms and my throat has remained smooth.

Please do not be tempted to try and 'crash diet'. Most people seem to consider Cohen's a Last Resort. If you have 'tried' numerous other programs over the years then this time develop patience, have confidence that this really does work, and more importantly, will enable you to keep the weight off.

Last Resort, Last Diet! But you have to give your body time to adjust. If it has been punished for years and years then just as if you had rescued a stray kitten, you have to let your body have time to become 'tamed' and to trust you and what you are going to do to it next!

This was the only diet I have really ever done. I have no interest in doing it twice. I want to be healthy, I want to be smart and fashionable, and I want to be 'normal'. It's lovely to get compliments and that really does tell me how bad I was looking before but people just accept obesity nowadays and everyone is too polite to say 'Wow! Look at you! Gross! Far out!'.

I look 'normal' now. This is how I was before the stress situation which changed my eating patterns and my metabolism. I like being 'normal'. I like blending in with the crowd. I like being able to participate in meals and to 'eat whatever I like' but nowadays 'whatever I like' has changed from during the fat years, when I liked just about anything not nailed down!

Now, what I like is what is going to keep my skin firm, keep my body weight stable, and most importantly, keep me in the 'ideal weight range' for the rest of my life.

For those of you with an interest in how this program works, read this when you have ten minutes or so

It's not that for the rest of your life you can't eat fried chicken drumsticks or roast pork or curries with pappadums or fried rice or the whole pack of biscuits if that's the mood you're in. It's only for a little while that we are restricted, the scales just become part of the meal preparation, and when we know why it is so important to eat tuna or zucchini or spinach it makes it easier to choose to eat it, both during and after the program.

So when you're feeling miserable or cross or dispirited because you aren't miraculously skinny and don’t yet look like Elle McPherson, remember that one day you will be at your ‘ideal weight’. Denying yourself your crispbread allowance is not going to hurry things along – and why not snap the crispbread up into six ‘chips’ each and enjoy twelve tasty, crunchy mouthfuls, or get some rice cakes and make a pizza for a savoury supper.

It’s not all just tuna and salad, or grilled chicken and lettuce. But most of all, what it is, is a new you.

So keep at it, we are all winners. Learn a bit more about the mechanics of the program and how the food works – it puts it into the ‘food as your medicine’ concept a bit more and tomorrow when you wake up you are another day closer to your goal.

Cheers

Chelsea

For me I dont worry about the 1 gram. 131 or 129...that is close enough to 130gms..that is only of if I cannot simply remove or add 1gm like a steak

However after a while you get good at cutting just the right size, eg. I can slice a 10,20,30,40 or 50gm slice of tomato nicely now, so most meals these days I get it exactly right. Spring onions can be sliced and added to many meals and these little slices are easy to top-up any meal the last few grams so you can get the meal weight exactly right.

I also noticed the yogurt remaining in the bowl, so I add 1gm extra for this  ...I suppose I could stick my head in and lick the bowl clean, but my lovely wife would be

Worst for me is bring a steak or fresh tuna home weighing it and finding it is 3 or 4gms less than my allowance, a couple of times the listed weight of the package was higher than actual weighed ...I cannot go easily go back to the shop and say could I please have an extra 4gms of fresh tuna as your package says 140gms but actually it was 136gms.

Excellent Webbie!!!

I did not know that pituitary gland secretes HGH.

This is a bit off-topic but pituitary gland is just nearby pineal gland (sixth Chakra - third eye). Do you think that because the pituitary gland is actively secreting HGH during cohen diet and some people's pineal gland might be affected?

Hello Ya'll!

Well - day four and already our first zipper victory!! Zipped up a pair of pants with ease that just three days ago was an impossibility! Now that's not bad progress!! I have no idea how much weight I have lost but WHO CARES! Fitting into my pants felt GREAT!!!

Congrates to Clarrie who has already come down 8lbs in 3 days!!! WOOHOO! Way to go girl!

Mermaid Sister - Keep up the good work - anything new seems hard at first - I remember with my firstborn - every diaper change was a major ordeal - I have three in diapers now and I can't even remember half of the diaper changes - it's second nature - if I'm talking or doing something I can change a diaper on one kid twice! It hardly registers it's so easy anymore. The same thing will happen with this program - it will become easier with each day and each meal.

Just keep thinking about the end results. Visualize how great it is going to feel being thin - forever! Visualize walking into a room and drawing attention for how HOT you look! Visualize yourself playing your favorite sport - doing your favorite activities - with ease. Visualize buying clothing that you love in super small sizes - see yourself going to the dressing room with one size and having to ask for a smaller size. See yourself buying a belt and it's too big. See yourself being called skinny by a friend. See yourself succeeding on this program.

Visualization is very powerful. I am already visualizing myself raiding my two teenage daughter's closets - they have some really cute clothes that I bought and they aren't even wearing - I think I'm going to borrow those real soon!

On another thought - A big part of weight issues are based on emotional issues - if you are fighting emotional battles they can sabotage any program - even Cohen's. I learned a technique that has helped me on the emotional hang ups at a site called . Emotional Freedom Technique can be very effective on a lot of issues. If you look at his info and are interested in it - don't buy the CD's - I already did - and I am allowed to pass out 100 copies for free - so no need for anyone else to pay more money - Anyway - this may not be for everyone but it was helpful for me - just thought it might help someone else out there too.

Well - my baby is screaming for attention -

GOOD LUCK COHENITE'S!

Momma Pajama - the incredible shrinking woman!:D

*the link put in it's own little ad thing - that was weird! - I tell you technology is moving faster than my weight loss!

Just thought I should share with everyone. According to the website, one of the effective steps to note in stimulating HGH is Deep sleep. Growth hormone is released in eight to twelve pulses throughout the day with the largest pulse occurring from midnight to 2:00AM , during slow wave or delta deep sleep.

Not sure if everyone know, when you are on cohen, you are depending a lot on your liver to metabolize the fat thru-out the day. According to Chinese sinseh, all our organs will start to de-tox/repair themselves at night at different time period. Liver starts to do their repair between 11PM to 1AM . If you stay up too late or your liver will not be able to do their routine repair and your weigh loss might be slower than others too.

So remember to hit the sack by 11pm so that you can start your next day with a refreshed liver!!!

back from my business trip

Well, after my good first day, I didn't manage another day with no deviations!! I won't tell you all the things I had. But generally I did follow the general principles - protein and vegetables.

Apart from not eating cakes/ sweets etc, the thing I find most difficult in eating out is getting vegetables that are on the program. So, I just had whatever vegetables that were served. I had to eat 3 nights at airports, so that was also a challenge, but there was an asian food store serving fresh food so I had skewers with stir fry, which was better than most meals on offer in other stores.

But I still managed to LOSE weight during the week - just over a kilo! So, I was pretty happy. It was probably due to standing all day and lugging heavy boxes around. The ground staff on our way home last night said we had 60kg over our free baggage allowance!! ooopss.

and I fit into the plane seats, and the seat belt was loose on me. Normally I've had to wedge myself in!

and 2 of the people who haven't seen me for a while said that I looked great.

So, all in all it was a good week, and now I'm back on the program 100% and I have a few weeks to get everything back in order before my next blood test.

I'm now in double digits on my home scales..... which is very exciting!

Starting weight 116.5 kg
Now 98.5 kg
Goal 60 kg

Wahooooo!!!

Hello to all you lovley people! It is great to see that most of you are doing well on the program and getting wonderful (and well deserved) results, even when some of them take a bit more time to emerge. But so many posts  - I actually got back a week ago, but it taken me this long to read through the many pages of posts! I really enjoyed the whole 'ebay incident'. Thanks for sharing that ~BAM~. You crack me up! :p
Well, as I said, I'm back from a 2-week holiday in Tassie...had a great time and saw so many beautiful places. We were even lucky enough to have it snow on Mount Wellington while we were there, so my daughter and my sisters 3 boys (and us grown ups too!) had a fantastic time having snowball fights and building snowman.
Anywho...onto the best news of all - I stood on my scales this morning (which I seldom do) and nearly died of shock! 66.2 kg!!! :D  I am supposed to have ordered my refeed program at 68 kg! So I got on the phone to my consultant and have organised to pick up my refeed on Friday....I'm soooooooooo excited! *this is me doing my happy dance* I just can't believe it! I still find it hard to process that I've made it this far. I am oficially less than a tub of butter my 'ideal' weight...a tiny little tub of butter! Wahoooo! Yippie! Zippity Do Da!
Yeah...so there you go. Just thought I would share that with all of you and I hope that my success provides you all with some inspiration to keep at it. You can all do this! Just believe in yourselves.

P.S. Lessfatty - as other people on the forum have noted, you are most wise, so wise in fact that I'm terrified of making a spelling or punctuation error in my posts. I'm not sure why, but I feel like I'm submitting some sort of assignment for marking... Is that really weird? Are you a teacher or a professor?

I forgot!

In all my excitement, I forgot to mention that I was bad girl whilst in Tassie. I intentionally deviated for the first time since I've been on the program. I'm not sure if you remember, but I went to Tassie with some other family members to surprise my Dad for his 60th birthday (and boy was he surprised! - he asked me if my other half of me - meaning my excess weight - I'm not in a relationship - had decided to stay back in Queensland :D . On the plane to Tassie, I toyed with the idea that after more than 6 months of being 100% committed to the program, I would let myself have a piece of his birthday cake. When I saw the cake, I was still undecided, but this cake was amazing...no flour, but absolutely huge and covered in chocolate gnache, decorated with silver leaves and cachous balls, and the sides of it were covered with thin pieces of chocolate. I almost didn't do it...I held out until there was only one tiny piece left. This was a few days after his birthday...we had to take the cake home with us to where we were staying as he 'couldn't possibly eat it all'. So I made the decision to have it and eat it too. I heated it for 5 sec in the microwave, and had it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dollop of cream. It was sensational. And I refused to feel guity about it...and I don't!
So anyway...just thought I would put that confession out there. My apologies to all of you whos' mouths are now drooling...Be strong! Focus! Success is yours for the taking!

My secound day in and its true! I'm hungry, cranky and flat and I keep reading the pizza menus- not because I'm tempted but just to imagine all that carby fatty goodness haha! well done on awsome results less than me I have almost the same amount of weight to lose as you did and only hope I can achieve the same wonderful results as you!

I have a question- Professor Lessfatty this may be to your knowing; is it possible to have too much balsamic vinegar? I have been having it with everything! and I mean everything, even my crackers which I HATE but apparently have to eat them for at least first 10 days so I'm drowning them in balsmic, along with my meat, veggies and fish, it doesn't say anything about limited balsamic in my booklet, but I'm worried I may be abusing my privelige (I know I spelt that wrong, but come on my brain is being depleted of carbs!)

anyway hope everyone is having an awsome weekend and thinking thin!

little victories

Mermaid Sister - my booklet gives no limitations for balsamic vinegar, but its probably worthwhile getting used to eating things without it!! Crispbreads will be your friends for a while!

I had another little victory today... I had to go and buy some new pants, because none of mine fit me anymore. (my hips finally began to shrink!) and I have gone down 3 dress sizes in 2 months! the pants are a little tight, but they are wearable now, so I'm very happy.....

I also bought some new shoes, and I've lost a shoe size too!

Yippee!

Crispbreads

Mermaid sister Here are few ideas on ways to use your crispbreads. If you are having something that garlic 'bread' would go with, try lightly spaying your crispbreads with olive oil and sprinkling garlic powder and herbs on them. Grill them for around a minute. This is a great substitute for the real thing. Have you tried crushing/processing them and using them as a thickener for casseroles, gravy or curry? And don't forget the cheese grills...put veggie allowance (onion, tomato, zucchini, squash, asparagus - or any combination of these) on the crispbread, top with mozzerella and grill. Crushed cripsbreads are great to coat fresh fish fillets too. I always mix them with some dried dill for this.
Also, if you have a sweet tooth, mix finely crushed crispbread with some cinnamon and sprite zero to make a cheesecake base. Press it into two muffin tins and refridgerate for 1/2 hour. Mix ricotta cheese (or philly if your lucky enough to be allowed it!) with some dissolved instant coffee, cinnamon and sweetener if you like, and then divide it into the two muffin pans. Cook at 180 degrees for about 10 mins (no need to do this with philly). Cool in fridge and enjoy as a treat after salad (veggie allowance). You can also try lemon cheesecake (using juice) or place chopped pieces of mango/peach onto the cheesecake base and put the cheese filling on top. I have also mixed mango purree into the cheese - this was so yummy! Hope these ideas help!

I was quite shakey the second and third days. Actually your brain is being depleted of sugars and is "feeling the pinch" and is about to signal starvation mode....a very good thing; when you enter starvation mode, the brain launches a signal to release of fatty acids from your fat cells.

Some feel OK just a little hungry during the first 3 or 4 days and some feel l terrible. I felt terrible :(

As for the vingar, my wife drinks for her health 30mls a day. I checked the cohen plan document and there is no set limit on it. It may be a good idea to check with the consultants about it. Are you having more than 30-40ml/day?

Personally I quite like the crackers...try a different brand if it is allowed on your specific plan. On the internet plan there are just recommendations for crackers, but with specifics on weights, calories, carbs, fat, fibre etc. So I just purchased about 4 different types that matched more or less the nutritional contents of the allowed crackers.

Salt, pepper, tabasco, lemon juice, herbs...these really add a lot of flavors to meals.

What did I eat today?

a) Breakfast; Yogurt, with an sliced apple, topped with a broken crackers.

b) Lunch, Salad (mostly tomato and baby spinach) with Mozarella cheese ; dressing was a mix of basalmic vingar, salt and pepper and a dash of tabasco Ate with cracker. But again I felt hungry about 2 hours after meal :)...so it looks like I will need avoid cheese meals in the future. Pity because I really like mozarella and other cheeses.

c) Dinner; Grilled rare steak; with mushroom and vegetable stir fry, sauce was a little caramalized tomato with garlic, chilli powder, salt, pepper, drop of lemon juice and some tiny amout of sweetener. Steak was grilled whole then removed and "rested", then sliced and mixed into the stir fried vegetables just before serving. I was starving before, it was yummy, felling good now :D

I am acutally quite shocked to read this, PLEASE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT SPELLING WITH ME, I am the worlds #1 worst speller! And my grammer is even worse! I couldnt even enter the university of my choice because I failed English in my final year of High School.

Just to make you relaxed a little more about me, I am an Australian, I work in the IT industry, I live in Japan, I have am married (to a Japanese) whom I meet in Australia and we have two lovely daughters. I have a degree in Biology (Biochemistry) as well as computer science...that is why I am interested in the science of "Why Cohen works".

...hold the image of me as a big fat nerd who plays with computers too much, soon I will be a tall slim nerd who plays with computers too much :D

Hello to all!

What great info and so many wonderful progress reports!! Way to go!!

Fornight - thanks for the info reminder on the liver - and the HGH - it got me to thinking - maybe it's the lack of sleep from babies at the same time of post pregnancy hormones trying to balance out that so many women end up with weight problems after their babies. That's when my problems started - and boy was I sleep deprived!! I have a two month old right now and I am thinking Daddy might be getting the night feedings from here on out!

I really enjoyed reading a little about Lessfatty and who you are - so I thought I would share a little about me (and hopefully inspire others to do likewise) As you already know - I am a mother to 13 children - 4 biological, and 9 adopted. 7 with special needs. I am married to an IT Nerd - he is the love of my life and my best friend. We live in the Hill Country north of San Antonio, Texas. I am a Healing Way Practitioner - which means I do Emotional healing and Energy work specializing in helping children heal from Trauma. And I am a Cohenite!! Day 6 - almost my first week is completed! I can't believe it! Now I am debating - to weigh? or not to weigh? That is the question!

The incredible shrinking woman!

joining in again

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking here for a long time and finally have decided to join you all. You are all inspiring and wonderful people and I am getting inspiration from you all.

First of all a big CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who is achieving success on this program. I can tell you if you stick with it, it works. I know of a lady who lost 70 kgs in about 8 months, she was like a steam train....very inspirational.

I joined Cohens Jan 05 and have been on and off this wagon since then. I have finally hit the 40kg loss mark but I am only half way......Ten weeks ago I had gall bladder surgery after having acute pancreatitis and finding out I actually had gallstones. I think the Cohen's way of eating actually is helping me with recovery. I have lost 18 kgs in the last 10 weeks and this has given me much needed motivation to get rid of this forever.

I am here for the long haul. Momma Pajama we can hold each other's hand as I understand where you are coming from. What an incredible amazing lady you are with your hubby to look after those children.....I take off my hat to you. :D Lessfatty I enjoy reading your research as I have an interest in anything biology as well even though I am not educated in that area. I think I have missed the boat!!!

To everyone hope you have a good cohen's day and enjoy being a loser!!!! ;)
