Started Cohen's Program Today!

Hello! My name is BB and I am new to the Cohen's program, in fact, I started today, September 1, 2006.:)

Although, extremely motivated and excited, I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about the precision required while on the diet. Thus, I have many questions....so, please bare with me :(

I just completed with Day 1 of the diet, and I have a question regarding approved fruit intake. I’ve been following my meal plan carefully, and have been incorporating the optional fruit in-between meals; I’m allowed three. Nectarines are in season in California, thus it is my fruit of choice. The only issue is that when weighed, each nectarine is ~220+ grams. Given the weight, is it still appropriate to eat 3 or even one per day? I’ve eaten two today :D Any insight you may have on this subject will be most helpful.

Also, am I setting myself up for failure by eating my last two meals only 3 hours apart? I read on a previous post that one must wait 5 hours between meals. Is that info accurate?

Lastly, like most women I am on a combination BCP. Do any of you ladies have insight regarding the following items:

  • Will changing my diet and rapid weight loss impact the pills effectiveness?
  • Conversely, will being on the pill inhibit rapid and consistent weight loss?

Alright, sorry to pepper y'all with questions. I would appreciate any insight / advice.

Regards,

BB

My plan talks about 170gms of honeydew melon, I take that as sort of the target of the amount of fruit to eat. The fruit from Japan I eat are large and sweet , peaches are frequently 350gms, so I just eat 1/2. Japanese apples are huge!

The fruit allowance is the strangest thing of the program, carefully weight meat and veg, including tomatos (a fruit btw) to the 1 gram, but then 3 servings of fruit seemingly with few restrictions. There is a lot of sugars in 3 fruits (540gms).

The plan recommends 5 hours between meals. This makes sense in a way, if you think that this gives time for your blood sugar (glucose) levels to drop and for the brain to signal the release of fat (triglyerol) which is metabolized by your body. Simply speaking it means you body stops using sugars from starches and sweet things and starts burning FAT (yipee).
So you want you body burning FAT for the longest possible time! 5 hours gives you plenty of time to burn fat!

So if you just cannot get around the 3 hours between meal issue, I suggest you dont eat fruit or crackers at all in those 3 hours.

Good luck for me the first 4 days were very tough, miserable in fact. But once you body adjusts (after going "cold turkey" on starchy carbs) everything settles down

HUGE Welcome to the Forum!!! And welcome to Cohen's!!

My help with Answers to your Questions are as follows:

1. The time between meals needs to be 5 Hours Apart due to the body not allowed to mix proteins! It is supposed to be very important!!!

2. The Fruit, you DO NOT need to weigh them, they are just for snacks and dont make a difference at all! Make sure you eat the fruit & drink the water!!!!!

3. I dont think taking the pill makes a diffference either, but im no Doctor.. Maybe if you are really concerned you should seek advice from your GP.

Just a word of advice, BE PATIENT!!! i am the most impatient person on earth, i want everything yesterday.. and im having alot of trouble on Cohen's at the moment.. being tempted with drinks & dinner... invited places i know i just cant go.. and my weight has stayed the same in 2 weeks and im fed up completely.. So, if your weight does stay the same for a while, dont let it worry you.. because you will be more likely to fall off the wagon (Not that i have yet...:) ) I probablly shouldnt say yet... I WILL NOT FALL OFF THE WAGON!!! But my god this is hard..

It will be my 5th week next week and i swear this has been the hardest thing i have ever done in my entire life, but i know deep down that if i concentrate and be strong that it will be the best thing ive done in my entire life..

Good luck with everything, remember to drink your water it is so important for weight-loss and makes sure you eat to the exact gramage.. and the time apart HAS to be 5 hours!!!!! :p

Why wait 5 hours between meals?

Just reading some stuff on the (so it may or may not be true)
  • High protein, low fat foods combined with low starch vegetables; ie exactly what we eat on cohens are digested in the stomach for the longest period of time. From 2 to 6 hours!
  • This may be part the reason why we "generally" dont feel as hungry given the small proportions as when we ate "normal" foods. What we eat stays in our stomachs being digested for many hours giving us a full feeling.
  • Given we could be digesting for 5 hours or more, I guess eating after 2 or 3 hours will result in our stomachs having almost fully digested proteins mixed with as yet undigested proteins. Eg. The almost fully digested tuna we had for lunch, could be mixed with the undigested steak we ate for dinner.

I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty sure that the food doesn't stay digesting in the stomach for the whole 5 hours, after the stomach has mushed it up into a smooth paste, it is then moved into the intestinal tract where most of the digestion/absorption of nutrients etc takes place.

Therefore waiting 5 hours ensures that our stomach IS completely empty before we eat and start the digestive process all over again.

Hello again everyone!

Thank you all (Slinkee, Lessfatty, and BAM) for your helpful and prompt advice...:) BAM, thank you for the ultra-warm welcome to the forum! It's nice to know I am NOT alone in this endeavor. I just finished day 2 and so far so good. I find that I am NOT getting very hungry. To be honest, I am literally forcing myself to eat the third meal --- kinda bizarre. I'm generally ALWAYS hungry :( I'm hoping my appetite will regulate itself soon.

On another note, I have corresponded with a Cohen Program Consultant regarding the likelihood of BC inhibiting rapid and consistent weight loss. Here is what they had to say:

"To the best of our knowledge, taking hormones might interfere with weight loss.

Best wishes,

1st personal diet team"

To be honest, I was quite discouraged to receive this vague yet discouraging response. I replied requesting additional details; I'll keep you posted on their response.

Alright, I'm off to consume my final meal: chicken, mushrooms, with a sh!tload of seasoning :)

Take Care and I'll check with you guys tomorrow,

BB

I deal with the consultants in america, and to the best of my knowledge (4 emails) they dont add any value at all. Sorry to say I think our collegues in Australia, Singapore generally have more experienced and realistic consultants. The person who recommended the program to me was in Australia and they were very happy with the consultants and of course with the result. I am happy with the results but found the consultant I have delt with vai email just wasted my time. This forum is about 1000times the information.

Maybe it is because american consultants must be more concerned with legal issues (trivial and non-trivial). But surely you are not the first woman using BCP on who has used the program. Given Dr Cohens background in reproductive medicine, I would surely hope a more clear/valuable response could be be provided. Like "we have found those using BCP lose on average 1KG less per month than those who do not take BCP".

Lessfatty, I completly agree with you! To be honest I am pretty annoyed with the lack of guidance, and as you said value-add! I'm going to continue e-mailing them (after all, TENACITY is my middle name ;))until they provide me with the detailed / appropriate response I deserve, and paid for!

In the meantime, I urge all ladies in the forum to share their experience with BCP while on the Cohen program.

Good Night...

BB

Hello, guess what!!!
My name is Eleni, i'm 20 years old and I paid my fee to start Cohens yesterday!! i'm so stoked, i'm hating the idea of blood tests (i'm not a big fan of needles) but omg, i'm going to lose weight!!! i saw the pics, was totally swayed!! i'm in adelaide, australia and the chickies at cohens are soooo nice :) i can't wait for my first meeting and my plan ah it's gonna be so much fun!!!! my family are supporting me 110% cause they know how hard it is for me to lose weight
but anyway, long story short, here i am and excited and i'll be needing this forum for the next exact 4 weeks while i fight off the hunger pains!!!

<3 eleni

p.s. what are the names of the vitamin/mineral supplements on cohens?

HI bettyboop

Like so many other woman the whole world over I'm on the BCP and I have never had any adverse affects to Cohen's while using it. Like usual I do find at TTOM I don't lose as much that week, but that's with every other diet i've been on too. I've only just realised in the last 2 months that I do retain water at TTOM because my engagement ring becomes a bit more snug on my finger.

So don't lose any sleep over it.
But I was quite surprised at the consultants reply, it couldn't have been any more vague. It's not like you were asking for the secret formula to Cohen's. :D

good luck with it too, cos it's a great diet for losing weight fast, and if you have any more questions there are heaps of people on this forum to help you, especially if your USA consultants wont.

ciao for now

HI Eleni

welcome to the forum and most importantly welcome to Cohen's. Don't worry, you won't be fighting off hunger pains for the next month, once you get past the few couple of days you'll be cruising along nicely. It does actually start to become second nature after a few weeks.

In regards to vitamins, I take
Blackmores Multivitamin (sustained release)
Calcium and Magnesium
Iron
Zinc
Chrominum
Flaxseed Oil
The best part about taking so many vitamins is that it helps keep your water intake high.

I've never been a big fan of needles either, and my veins tend to hide away so they have to poke around to find one, but the other day when i had a blood test, I swear, I've had mosquito bites that hurt more, the blood taking lady was so gentle.

Hello All

Hello my hard working boys and girls,

well as usual life presents us with amazing challenges which you can either accept and tackle head on or you can surrender at first sign of trouble.
This weekend i spent preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up for a 60th birthday party of an old family friend . Oh boy! I'm exhausted and i think someone up there was giving me one more final challenge, a test! I PASSED!

Tomorrow i satrt refeed.

Its a very complex plan, 17 days in total!

every day i add some protein, some veg and slowely over the 17 days i add some new fruits new veg ,carbs, milk, alcohol, biscuits, mix protein and not have to wait 5 hours between meals!

your expected to continue to lose a little weight over the process but at the moment i feel very overwhelmed by it all!

Tomorrow i increase 30g protein and 40g veg which should be split through the day eg: 15g Protein and 20gVeg at lunch and same at dinner

no new things yet , that waits till tuesday- Rockmelon here i come!:p

Its great to read everyones posts ,keep up the good work

i still need to tell myself a few times a day "its not worth it" repeat it-believe it!

Still Breathing

Hi all.. just wanted to let you all know that I am still breathing...
Big thanks to jewls, you've a beautiful heart and I thank you for it... you'll be happy to know that I've made the new workplace a safe haven, no bad food is going to pass my lips in there! and the open plan environment is great for keeping binge attacks at bay... no office to hide in!
So much energy this weekend... I borrowed a child yesterday (as advised on this forum) and was picking her up and down all day and carrying her up hills etc... had me thinking about the weight loss and that really I should be used to lugging around a small child! Then today, we went for a huge stroll (I won't say walk because really it wasn't) stopping for coffee here and there, we made such a miserable day (i.e. rainy) really lovely but have had gut aches tonight... don't think they're related though.
Other than that not much going on, I feel much more in control and happy.
Ok, have to go and prepare my lunch for tomorrow, have been trying to convince hubby to cook it for me but he won't! Damn!

Yay! Got my ticker working! Thanks for your advice on this beebee - couldn't have done it without you (and my lovely husband).

Thanks Jewls for your warm welcome. I'm starting tomorrow and can't wait - 60 kg here I come!:D

Have a good night!

Julie

hey sweetie,

good to hear you're doing well. Keeping up the healthy happy headspace. I'm so proud of you, keep powering on!

G.I Jane i Miss you - i'd love to have a coffee together soon!:p

Seems lots of people are doing so well!! Good for you. Nice to see the consistent movement of the tickers and the excitement of people getting healthy. Especially you Babyegg!!! Great about the sugar stabilizing - so pleased for you.

Netski, a huge congrats from me. You have been so persistent and it has paid off so well. Enjoy the changes that refeed brings.

I have my final blood test tomorrow and then wait for refeed to arrive - and it is up to me when I start it. My finishing date will still be the same unless I start refeed earlier.

Am getting there slowly.

About the fruit, I use Alan Bosh's calorie, fat and carb. guide that is on sale at most newsagents - he updates it each year. He lists sizes of most of our fruit. An average apple is 150gs, average orange is 200gs and an average mandarine is 120gs. I found these portion sizes a help and use them as a guide. Can;t wait for the peaches, nectarines and mangos to be back in season!

Have a positive day,

Began 9th July 2005 … To end 20th October, 2006
lizzi . . . 47 days to go! … 6weeks 5days
