I've just arrived at the other end of the room, 178lbs, and about five ounces.

Ah... I've just been to peruse your diary - which I must do more of - there's lots of interesting stuff in there, including about the tomato-shaped peppers! But I see now that you're well and truly out of here! :D Hearty congratulations!

The 170s Club - the clubroom is decorated with motivational posters, and big blow-up pictures of all the members looking great, because we've made it this far. At the bar is a variety of herbal teas, and sparkling mineral water, with fresh lemons and limes and mint leaves, to add a squeeze of flavour.
The Committee is considering which fruit should be placed out in bowls, to be Fruit of the Month.
 
Quiet in here, of course. Still, the Committee do their best to brighten things up. They have declared the Fruit of the Month (September) to be the dragonfruit, which many people think is an Asian fruit, but which actually comes from the Caribbean. A cup of the flesh (8 ounces, 225-odd grams) allegedly contains:
  • Calories: 136
  • Protein: 3 grams
  • Fat: 0 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 29 grams
  • Fiber: 7 grams
  • Iron: 8% of recommended daily intake
  • Magnesium: 18% of recommended daily intake
  • Vitamin C: 9% of recommended daily intake
  • Vitamin E: 4% of recommended daily intake
Note that it’s pretty strong in iron and magnesium.

Personally, I think it’s sweet but fairly bland, though the seeds give it some interesting texture, and it looks spectacular on a fruit platter.
 
Oh! Nearly the last day of September, and thus the last day that the Club is celebrating the dragonfruit, or pitaya or pitahaya, a name which is believed to have come from the old indigenous language of the Caribbean region, Taíno.
It was apparently the French who brought it from Central or South America - maybe Nicaragua, maybe Colombia, maybe Guyana - to Indochina. They brought it along at first (if the internet is anything to go by) as an ornamental plant, the same way that prickly pear was introduced to Australia. To which I can only say: :banghead: (But then again, I've never actually tried prickly pear.)

Now if this 170s Club bar were only real, instead of imaginary, I'd order a dragonfruit smoothie (something else I've never had) in honour of the Fruit of the Month - as it is, however, I'll give a link to recipe instead:

This seems to be more of a puree than a smoothie, to me, but it looks easy and healthy and very bright!
 
Still the only member in the 170s Club? Yep - looks like it! :D
But though it's quiet, I'm enjoying being here; my overall plan is to stick at around about where I am (176 pounds this morning), not to make a big push to get out of the 170s and into the 160s just yet.
Mind you, there's a bottle of prosecco waiting for me when I cross the obese/overweight line - which will be at 175 - and I'd like that to be in the next week or so, but I'm not rushing, partly because I want to be really sure that my skin has a chance to keep pace with the diminution of my bulk. So far, so good.

And to keep up the illusion of club life in here - I must check in with the Committee to find out what is Fruit of the Month (October). Thanks for visiting!
 
The Committee have spoken! The Fruit of the Month for October is:
Bananas!
Surely the most cheerful, smile-inducing fruit of them all… and not bad nutritionally, either!

A standard banana will net you about 90 calories of energy, and also gives about 2.6 grams of fibre, contributing to feeling full.
As well, it packs a good dollop of potassium, 358 mg, which is 10% of the average daily need – potassium is “one of the most important minerals in the body. It helps regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve signals. What's more, a high-potassium diet may help reduce blood pressure and water retention, protect against stroke and prevent osteoporosis and kidney stones.”
And also delivers helpful serves of vitamin C and B6 (14% and 20% of daily needs) and a little magnesium (6% of daily needs) as well! Excellent, excellent fruit - I think I'll go and eat one right now!

i'm a fan of the slim, yellow fruit myself, but remember avocados will also give you a good shot of potassium... ~700mg.
 
Hey, a visitor! Great to see you, Flyer, even if it'll only be briefly - at least, I expect you'll be back into the 160s Club before I blink - and good for you that it's so!

I'd better get a move on, if I'm going to say anything sensible about bananas before the month goes! First thing to say - I love Flyer's name for it:
the slim, yellow fruit
Second thing to say - they're not all slim at all! In fact the bunch of bananas that I am going to have to eat up fairly soon are short and dumpy - but still yellow, mostly.
And that brings us to the third thing to say about bananas - they don't last long! Once they're ripe, they're ripe, and then the race is on to think of ways to use them up before they get very ripe. There's:
  • eating straight
  • eating chopped up with other fruit
  • banana smoothie, and
  • banana curry.
And that will do for today! Next entry - what to do with bananas when they tip over into the very ripe stage. :)
 
Amy I’m hoping I join here soon . Maybe another week or 2 ! I had a sneaky weigh in this morn and it was 181 Hovering at 181.5 !! Getting close can’t believe it cos the last month has been chronically slow but hoping my official weigh in tomorrow will be a loss.

It'll be lovely for there to be someone else in here - the Club rooms have been pretty echoey and empty, I have to admit! And

Sounds good! I like bananas, in Florida we used to have bananas in the yard, mostly for the look, but on rare occasions we'd get a ripe bunch.

Sorry to be intruding here, I'm a long ways from being 170s qualified, but maybe one day I will be.
 
by the time i looked at bananas yesterday i already had strawberries, plums, apples and peaches in the cart, ...all on sale!

It was fun, but not really a very practical fruit to cultivate. We would get an average of 1 bunch a year, not always at the same time of year, about half the years nothing, other years 2 or 3 bunches. The problem with bananas is the whole bunch ripens at the same time, and you only have a very few days from green to rotting, trying to eat or give away 100 bananas that's challenging, and no juicing like peaches. No, we never had much trouble with animals eating them, we did have possums (the american variety) but never lost any bananas to them. We did once have one of Florida's feral monkeys get into them, but he didn't take many.

bananas are so hit and miss here at the moment . They are either really ripe and bruised or green . I have a small one most days to keep me going .
Already today I have had blueberries , raspberries, strawberries and a kiwi. A kiwi I think is a great fruit ( perhaps if I’m picking Amy perhaps I go with that ?) helps keep me regular lol !!
