Cate's Diary

Thanks, Liza. Having the treats on Sunday night I do think is a good idea. Now I have gone over a week without any wine I need to cut my calories a little bit more. I thought I would ease into “dieting”.

I weighed this morning & there’s a bounce back up. I’ll keep getting on the scales regularly even though it drives me bonkers as I need to know. I saw 1.5 kg less 4 days ago!

It got down to -1oC this morning but is sunny. We’re off to the tip. It has to be done :svengo: When you live in the bush there are no services such as rubbish collection or town water. We have 2 large water tanks. We pick up an elderly woman’s recycling too along the way. She just turned 90 & still lives at home on her own, drives & does volunteer work.

I just double checked my food for yesterday & I missed a couple of things. I had 1585 cals & a 343 deficit.

Edit: I decided to have Greek style natural yoghurt, berries & rhubarb with a teaspoon of almond meal as a low cal start to my day. I have to double check the yoghurt cals when I don’t have a little dog on my lap. He has an upset stomach this morning & just settled.

Edit 2: I have been constipated for a week & that could be a factor too. Wine must help. I’ll buy some apples today.

That absolutely makes a difference on the scales. And the sweets you had last night, as moderate as they were, could be making you retain some water. Alcohol irritates my intestines even in small amounts so I could see them getting a bit lazy for a while if I suddenly moved from having it regularly to not having it at all.

I think that's what has happened, LaMa. My intestines have got lazy. I'll increase my fibre & decrease my cals a bit as well. I stocked up today. I bought some oats, some licorice, grapes, apples & lots of veggies.
I asked the guy who owns the whole food store why he doesn't have a covid check-in QR code displayed in his store & then wished I hadn't asked. Apparently, he thinks that the state government health department QR code check-in thing is an attempt to control us, covid does not exist (it's influenza) & millions will die in the next year, covid will be blamed & their deaths will be because of the vaccines. :svengo: I will struggle to shop there again but it's a wonderful store.
I have struggled a bit today physically. I'm just tired I think & aching a bit. I just got back from a 1.5 km walk with Arch & am sitting on my chair in front of the fire. It has been a lovely, sunny day. Le Tour de France has started & I'll have to try to not stay up too late watching it.

:svengo: indeed... I hope you looked as baffled and affronted as I just did so he knows you thought he was talking nonsense.
Remember to increase your fluid intake along with the fiber if you want the fiber to work its magic.

I certainly did. He would be in no doubt how I felt about his whacko views!

I don't think I could drink much more fluid than I do already, but I'll try.

If you´re drinking a lot already it´s probably not a problem. Some people have trouble drinking enough anyway and when they up their fiber they get very constipated.

Conspiracy theories are wild, I'm speechless about the store owner.

About constipation - if fibre+fluid doesn't help, osmotic laxatives are safe and won't cause the intestine to get lazy as they don't "purge", they just make the stool more watery/soft. (When my IBS was really bad, I got a prescription for daily use of the stuff for a whole year.) It's OTC and suitable for irregular use when needed. Just don't take it at the same time as regular meds.

Thanks, LaMa & Milana. My body is working better. I had cut down my fruit as well as cutting out the wine & now that I have added in a bit more fruit I'm a lot better. I have been having just one Speculaas biscuit each evening, but instead of that, I had half a piece of molasses licorice last night. ✔️
Edit: Thanks, floater. I take osmotic laxatives every day & have done for a long time, unfortunately. I'll try taking them at a different time I think. I'm afraid my system is dependant on them now, but I still get clogged up from time to time.
After completing over a week without wine I now feel I can cut down on a few other things as well. I hadn't cut out all sweets last week & had ice cream a few times with stewed fruit.

G has gone to play golf at the local course as we have a funeral to go to tomorrow on his normal golf day. I am going to make a pot of vegetable soup for my lunch. I'll use some pumpkin, celery, onion, carrot, garlic, greens from the garden & lots of fresh herbs. I don't think we have any stock in the fridge so I might just add a veggie stock cube. After lunch, I'll have an apple. We are having tandoori-style chicken with veggies tonight.

Yesterday I kept my calories to 1223, with a 664 deficit with my FB adjustment. Very happy with that. I wasn't hungry in the evening at all.

Oh, sorry! Having long term gut issues sucks.

Also, my condolences about the funeral. The food plans sound delicious, best of luck with everything.

Thanks, floater. My gut issues have improved but go back to my first childbirth. No one warned me about that.
The funeral will be very sad as he was such a lovely guy, but he was not a close friend. He died from MND. We will know lots and lots of people so we will also be catching up. We will go to the memorial service & the grave but skip the drinks etc afterwards.

Glad to hear your gut's doing better Cate. Yes could totally see how that could affect the scales...

That veggie soup sounds amazing!

Thanks, Liza. I didn't make that soup after all as I went for a walk with Arch & when I got back it was about 12.15. I had raw celery with some low-fat Quark (with some chilli & garlic added to it), snow peas, cucumber, a raw carrot, a few cherry tomatoes & one pickled onion. Then I had a banana. Total cals 179. I must, must, must remember how good it feels to eat this healthy! I even have tomorrow's breakfast ready in a bowl in the fridge. I just added it to MFP & I'll need to adjust it down next time as it's 484 cals. Next time fewer oats & no dried fruit medley. I could not add the Greek yoghurt after I heat it, but that's vital I think.
I just got scam messages on my phone. It seems there's no end to spam.....:spam::smash:
One pretended to be from a global buying website that I have never used & the other from my bank, which was sneaky.

It is delicious, LaMa. I get it from the whole foods shop & we have a half piece each. I'm going to include it within my daily cals each day I think. It's delicious medicine. I'm hungry already at 2 pm so lunch was not enough. It was worth a try, but I'll go eat something else now I think before I'm tempted to eat something unhealthy.

This sounds very delicious + healthy, a winning combination!

Good call. Very good to know when you need something more and making a good food choice!

Thanks, Milana. It was delicious but wasn't quite enough & then last night I was overly hungry. I'm always learning. My body copes better with a good breakfast & lunch & then I can have a lighter dinner & not be ravenous.

I don't think I will ever stop learning about "diet" & nutrition. Even if I'm not particularly hungry at lunchtime I still need to eat something substantial or I feel starving later, especially in Winter. It really took some resisting last night & I went over my 1500 -1606 cals, with only a 162 deficit after my FB allowance. At 9.30 last night, I could have eaten the pantry & had a small piece of sourdough bread with peanut butter (105 cals). I needed real food, not chocolate. Today I'll make sure I have more protein.
BF this morning was oats, dried fruit medley, LSA, Greek yoghurt & rhubarb-484 cals. Next time, fewer oats, no dried fruit & add some more almond meal. I already had it soaking when I inputted it into MFP.
Lunch will be crackers, cheese & salad items etc( before the funeral as we have to eat early.) 289 I can have something else when we get home- a fruit platter maybe.
Dinner will be Pho.
Edit: Lunch just changed. G is going to make some venison patties & we will have them with veggies 381 cals. Yum.

It is a very interesting topic, LaMa & that is OK.
We went to the funeral this afternoon & to the graveside afterwards & it was a really lovely service & not sad. It was done so well & was so positive as was the guy whose funeral it was. He was one of the loveliest men I have ever met. He died from MND. He really was an inspiration. To so many people he was something different, but what sticks in my mind is how kind he was to my mother. He had a few changes in his work life including horse training but ended up nursing in aged care. He was special. It was the biggest funeral I have ever been to.
We didn't go for drinks afterwards but on the way home I said to G that we would have a bottle of sparkling to celebrate T's life when we got home. I am enjoying a glass of sparkling red wine right now. I have walked a lot today, including a walk with Arch before & when we got back home & I will still end up in deficit. I have gone 10 days without any alcohol & I quite liked it. Tomorrow is July :)
