Cate's Diary

That's wonderful. I know what you mean about feeling confident enough in yourself where you don't feel thrown off if someone is being odd. I hope your foot is doing well today and that you get some nice golfing in without pain.

That's great to hear Cate. So good that you are all getting along better and that you had a good win as well!
I hope you can find good ways to soothe that foot while waiting for the operation.
Thanks, Liza. It feels so much better getting along with most of the women. I'm sure P would have felt the same when we were drawn together & I hope we can continue to get along. I think playing as a team & doing well would have helped.
It will be good to get my toenails cut again by someone who does a good job. They are getting so hard to do myself. I rubbed the arnica cream in again last night & that felt so good. I slept well.

Thanks, M. I feel good today. I'll give my feet a bit of rest & only play golf once in the next week. At least this has helped me decide about it. The arnica cream is so soothing. I must buy another so that I don't run out.

I looked at the jar of cream & it is Comfrey! I will get some more. I saw the podiatrist & she was lovely. I am going to ring the hospital tomorrow & see if I can make an appointment to see the doctor who will do the surgery so that I can ask a few questions.

Oh, interesting about the comfrey. I wonder if it would be hard to make your own salve? I love trying things like that. It's inspiring seeing you figure out how to be in harmony at your golf club with some difficult women in charge. I really love how you stick to kindness. It really helps me with my difficult people a lot. I hope you click really well with the foot surgeon!

Comfrey is so pretty, and if it helps your feet as well that's even better! The German name is Beinwell (Bein can mean leg or bone), and I think it's used as an anti-inflammatory: for aching muscles, minor sports injuries, and mild arthritis.

Great job on the golf game and getting on so well with P and J1. Life is just easier when you can get along with people, even if there are things you don't like about them.

I hope you have a satisfying meeting with the surgeon and you feel better about getting the surgery done.

Thanks, Marsia, Liza, Llama & Em. I don't think I will grow Comfrey as I (G) may accidentally use it in cooking & it looks dangerous. After reading about it I'll make sure not to use it on any open wounds.
"Today, eating or taking any form of comfrey by mouth isn’t recommended. It’s considered unsafe, due to the pyrrolizidine alkaloids that comfrey contains. These are dangerous chemicals that can cause cancer, severe liver damage, and even death when you consume them. For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration and European countries have banned oral comfrey products.
Modern scientific studies have found some evidence to support comfrey’s use in treating minor wounds and joint pain, but oral preparations of the plant have also been linked to liver damage and cancer. You should never take comfrey by mouth. You should also avoid using it on open wounds."

Thanks, M. I think kindness makes me feel better about other people even if they don't always respond to it. I don't have to like everyone, just as they don't have to like me.

This is very true, Em.

I'm almost nervous to say that I think I have my sleep back into a good routine. I have slept well practically every night for the last week. 🤞
We had a wild night last night- very windy & lots of rain. There are wind warnings. G & I are going to the tip as G said he would do the recycling from the club. There's so much out there & it's something we can help with.

We just got home from the tip & are glad to be back. It's awful out there. The job is done though & that always feels good. Someone will get a nice surprise when they go to do that job. The power was out while we were out & it seems like we are on half power. I looked up the power company site & lines are down all over the state. I love having our wood heater.

I hope your power is restored soon. It sounds cozy sitting around the wood stove though! That's so good you are sleeping well again. Thanks for the info on the comfy plant causing liver damage. We used to eat borage when I was a kid, comfrey's annual cousin, because it was supposed to be good for you. They didn't know about it being toxic back then. I plan to grow it as a nitrogen fixer, but won't eat any now! Nice you can surprise someone at the club that you already did their job!:)

Yes I never ingest comfrey--but it is a wonderful looking plant and lovely to have as a natural fertilizer for the garden...
I do like the idea of getting into making my own salves and medicine. I went to a workshop on how to make your own calendula ointment...maybe one day I will get into that sort of thing.

Excellent you have backup for when your power goes out. And great you got all that recycling done for the club!

It would be hard to confuse comfrey for an edible - except for borage, which is one of my favorite garden plants though I wouldn't eat it either - but making your own creams is also a lot of work to make something you can so easily buy.

Thanks, Marsai, Liza & Llama. I have a fenced-off garden that only has edibles & will stick with that to be safe. The cream is inexpensive.
The power wasn't restored until 3.40 this afternoon. It threw us out a bit. Our phones weren't charged & my backup portable charger died yesterday. Power was out for about 16 hours. I had to work out how to get our remote-controlled garage door to open & then I went for a drive to charge my phone in the car & to take Arch for a walk.
We will go into Launceston this week & will buy a new charger & a lamp or two. We even ran out of candles. I am going to investigate generators. The power goes out where we live too often.
I sewed 5 hearts today as I have given away 3 this week.

I'm glad you could figure out the garage door to get out ok. I can't figure out how to open ours manually. Sounds like a really good plan having back up chargers, candles, and all. We have that from living in the mountains where the electricity went out a lot, and it's so nice not having to worry about when the electricity might come on again. Glad you made it through without too much trouble!!

16 hours without power! yikes! What happens to all the fridge stuff in that case? Does it have to get tossed?
A generator sounds like a good idea if power goes out for so many hours like that.
Nice work getting more hearts sewn!

Yay for more hearts and the electricity being back! It's something that doesn't happen here too much anymore, luckily. It was a lot more frequent when I was growing up.

Thanks, Vic, Marsia, Liza, LLama & Em.
My arithmetic wasn't too good. The power was partially out for 28 hours, not 16. We had a half-phase power failure for about 4 hours & then everything went out. Our chest freezer is in the garage & it's cold down there. We didn't open it until the power came back on & things were still solidly frozen. Our kitchen fridge/freezer didn't have anything in it that spoiled although we had some ice cream last night & it was soft serve. There wasn't much left.
I love making hearts. I'm so glad I read about them.
G & I will have a quiet day at home today. I'll cut his hair. Tomorrow we're playing golf as he is doing the bar & we may as well play. I'll be in town all day Tuesday (sorry, Arch) as I'm going to attempt to learn the new system at golf as the guy who knows how to is on a training course that day. I then won't play on Wednesday as we're playing next Saturday, maybe with T & her husband, I.
I have a few things going around in my head at the moment that I need to sort. We are booked on the ship to go to a 100th birthday lunch next month & were going to leave our car at the docks but last week lots of cars were broken into. We then thought we would take the car but the ship has no car space. I'll ring today to make sure.
Also, our friend's memorial service is in Melbourne on the 10th of this month(Monday week). I'll have a look at airfares in a sec. It's hard to work out these things, especially with our doggo. I'll go have a look & come back xo

That's great you didn't have many melted frozen things after a day of the power being out. We've left our car with a friend who is close to where we are going (usually the airport) so we don't have to pay horrible parking rates. I hope you can figure out something nice and convenient. I hope you have a nice home day and hair cutting day!

28 hours is way worse but as Marsia said: good thing things didn't spoil. Good on you trying to learn the new system at golf, even if it may be a bother. New skills are good for us. Fingers crossed things will turn out with the car issue.

Thanks, M. We thought of asking a friend who lives not far from the terminal, but we are both really independent & hate asking favours. I know it's silly. We can park at the terminal & it's free. I tried adding the car to our booking & it worked but cancelled it as soon as I saw it was going to cost an extra $480. That's crazy.
I have had a nice day at home but I stuffed up G's haircut by putting on the #2 attachment rather than the #5. He doesn't mind, but I do. It's very short!

Thanks, Llama. I'll have a go at the new system, but I won't lose sleep if I can't work it out.
It was lucky that we didn't have much in our kitchen freezer.
We won't be going to our friend's memorial service next week as airfares are ridiculous. We would have to go over & back in one day & it would cost us almost $2K. We'll watch the live stream.

$2000 is weeks-long, far-flung vacation flight kind of money! Nice they'll have a livestream though.
