WTF Is Overtraining?

I’ve had an interview and a client meeting this morning so I haven’t eaten yet!!! I’m off to the gym in a bit too, I bet I’ll be struggling a bit today

My training is a bit screwed up because of the groin strain, I didn't really want to have 2 upper days back to back so I did some lighter work on the leg press (3x20 @ 310), some calf raises and some chest flys to keep my legs working a little bit while I recover. Hopefully I'll be able to start training legs properly again next week

Time for a little update

I couldn’t do Wednesdays training yesterday as I did one Push Up Iso Hold and realised I was going to do damage to my groin again and I also thought that snatches might be risky so I switched to my Friday training instead.

Can’t remember exact details but I was pulling more on the one arm cable rows, I did 3x10 @ 176 and then 1x10 @ 187 which is a pretty good progression. I was pressing 132 more comfortably too so I’m pretty happy considering my weight has stalled at around 227-228 for a few weeks.

A lot of the weight stalling is due to having no food in the house, we really need to go shopping but with food prices increasing like they are my girlfriend is insisting that we finish off absolutely everything in the cupboards before going to the supermarket. How am I meant to get supersized eating tins of kidney beans and sweetcorn?

I need a steak pie!!!

Is the world turning American?

I noticed something the other day; I’ve started calling trousers ‘pants’. There are other little Americanisms I seem to have picked up from here too, like referring to secondary school as ‘high school’.
I don’t watch much TV at all, and the US telly I watch is generally of decent quality (Colombo, Futurama, Twin Peaks, Scrubs, Lost, Frasier etc…) and watched infrequently so I figure my Americanisation has happened from talking to you guys on here.

Has anyone else here noticed this? Do any other cultures filter through into America and alter your language and daily lives?

I don’t mind cultures blending but I now find that my daughter (4 y/o) now talks with a bit of an American twang in her voice, probably from Disney films like Cars. She doesn’t watch them all the time but she’s like a sponge with those films and copies the main characters and as Lightning McQueen’s voice is provided by Bruce Willis (I think), she now sounds a little like him which is odd. Oh and Dora, we thought it would help with her Spanish but she seemed to stop learning after Buenos Noches and has now started saying words like map and back pack in what sounds like a Californian accent

That's pretty funny. It is Owen Wilson.

I don't really notice other cultures or ways of saying things coming from other countries. People in different areas of our country talk different and have different mannerisms.

Example -

My wife recently went to visit friends in Ohio. The one thing that stuck out was how rude people are up there compared to down here. (we live in South Carolina)

There are the obvious northern and southern accents as well as attitudes.

More specifically.

Is the world turning American?

Yea. No matter what people in other countries say about us, or how much they dislike us, they watch our TV shows and movies, they want to buy our clothes. They are interested in our actors and other people of note.

I get email every week from people all over the world who want to buy our exercise equipment. When I was in the supplement business people from other countries wanted our supplements. These things are apparently not as good in most other countries.

You make an interesting point about this website. I am sure your computers run on windows, thats American. The internet is bigger here than in any other country, there are thousands of American websites that people from around the world visit on a regular basis. The top 9 sites in the world are American. Of the top 20, 14 are American, 3 are Asian, 1 is Indian, 1 is French, and 1 is DE. (I don't know who de is, looks German to me)

By casual deduction, people all over the world want the lifestyle and things that we have. So there is going to be some Americanization of the world.

Just my observations.

I don't think that people watch your movies means we want to be like you. You just make the best movies, no one else uses that much money in making movies :p

And we have to relate to America, you're the biggest exporter in the world, the biggest trader, we can't hide from that :p

and 1 is DE. (I don't know who de is, looks German to me)

Yeah, DE stands for Deutschland

I’m not sure about everyone wanting to be like you, but you do make some good TV and nice kids films and of course you speak the same language which always helps, but other than that I’d still rather live somewhere like Italy or Switzerland where the quality of life is higher

I did not say people wanted to be like us. I said people want our lifestyle and the things that we have.

I am pretty sure China is the largest exporter in the world.

I don't know about the quality of life thing or even what that means.

But look at it this way. You going to Switzerland or Italy is about the same distance as me traveling to another part of the US. Though there is a HUGE variance in lifestyle, attitude, and outlook on life.

The difference between the north and south, the east and west, even the central and mountain areas is significant here.

For example, I would not want to live in California, New York, Florida, or much of the Mid-West.

The south and central US is where it is at. The people in these areas are MUCH nicer to be around and have a much better lifestyle. (even though they do not have as high of an income)

As a result of these differences I liken moving from state to state here with moving from country to country in Europe.

The main reason is that is how it felt when I when in Europe. Having been only a visitor, I can't make statements on the finer points of each country, but that has been my perception.

That is very true, it’s one of the reasons I want to travel through America one day, but surely you must be finding that these regions are become less distinct over time? If we’re turning into a mix of Californian New Yorkers then I bet the same is happening to your youth over there

I tried to do leg work today, the first proper leg work since my groin strain about 9 days ago, I didn’t want to risk snatches still so I modified my Monday training and did opened with squats and did single leg leg presses instead of lunges (I didn’t think I should stretch the area so soon either

I did 3x20 @ 220 for the ATG squats and 3x10@ 174

I did some light RDL’s and woodchoppers too, the groin held up well but still don’t feel comfortable enough to go heavy yet. The 20 reps on squats felt good though

Well, I bet if you made it though this feeling okay, and you keep easing your way back, you will be 100% in no time.

FYI – I didn’t train on Friday or over the weekend as I had a really bad nosebleed on Thursday. I was pulling a lot of weight on Thursday and I think the pressure was a little too much for my nose

I might also take a trip to the doctor to get my blood pressure checked too

Still going easy on my leg because of the groin strain but managed to knock out 3x20 ATG Squats at 242lbs. I didn't feel any pain in my leg so it might be OK to go heavy again
