Velocity Diet Log

I started the Velocity Diet detailed at T-Nation yesterday, 6/27/2007. I will detail my progress here.

Start date: 6/27/2007
Starting weight: 235 lbs
Starting BF%: 29% (using US Navy logarithms)

End date: 7/25/2007
Goal weight: 220 lbs
Goal BF%: TBD

I had one slip-up last night, the first day. I came home from the office and my wife had just finished cooking some chicken breasts, so I ate one of those. At least it was lean protein. I will count that as my normal meal for Week 1. Now my wife knows what I'm doing so she'll be more cooperative.

I weigh myself each Saturday morning.

Good luck man, this diet is brutal physically and mentally, but those who made it through seem to be happy they did it.

Best of luck. I've done velocity a while back and it went great for me. Stick to absolutely everything, don't slip up at all, never. Make sure you have all of your numbers down, and if you aren't using the metabolic drive and surge, make sure you have something extremely similar.

I don't know your background at all, but if you don't have a really firm grasp of training (and have been training intelligently for a while) and know how your body responds to different macro breakdowns...I wouldn't wait a while to do it.

Oh, also, I really recommend enteric coated fish caps, not the regular ones, it's worth the extra money...I imagine you'll be taking a ton, 25 or so? not sure I was going 21 and I started around 200 pounds

Like the rest said man, best of luck to you. It is a brutal diet and will test you mentally. I got through it with no slip ups and was extremely please with the results and will do it again in the future. Just follow it to a T and make your free meal sensible. Again, good luck!

Good luck T.

Thanks to all. Luckily, I've done similar diets in the past, namely the Kekwick Fat Fast (1000 calories of >90% fat per day), so it's not a brand new style of diet to me. However, I've never done Kekwick for more than a few days, so 28 days with this is going to be tough.

Into Day 2, I am not so much hungry as I am missing eating solid food. Also, I have a bit of an odd taste in my mouth. It feels and tastes like my mouth first thing in the morning before I've had a chance to brush my teeth and tongue. I will see if that passes in the next few days. The weird mouth taste comes in the afternoon.

I've been reading on this. I can't do it right now with all the cardio I do for triathlon training but in the future in the off season I might. Does it matter what protein powder to use? I use Accelerade for my during/post workouts, is that ok in place of surge?

You're a lawyer right? I would think it was coming from talking sh*t. :yelrotflmao:

Really just kidding-- good luck with the diet.

It definitely matters. For the regular shakes you need a slow digesting blend, a casein blend. and for the pwo shakes, surge is ideal because of the 2:1 ratio of malto to protein (faster acting), and a good dose of bcaa's. You can use your own stuff though, but making sure to get the right breakdowns, ratios, etc...

Tanizaki, how long have you been training? You should post up your routine (detailed) as well...

..

yeah accelerade has that ratio...can you give me some good names of quality protein powders worth the cost?

I would recommend using ON (optimum nutrition) basic whey protein (the 100% gold standard) and their casein protein. The regular whey is isolates and concentrates, and the casein is more expensive - and deservedly so, because it's just all casein. You would need a mix of those for the regular shakes.

You could use the regular ON for your pwo shake (if you don't use accelerade) and just add malto, or a malto/dextrose blend, and bcaas.

Nitrean (google it) also makes some good products, I remember seeing that they have a good blend, and the more you get the cheaper it is. When I checked out the costs it came out quite a bit less than metabolic drive.

There is the flax meal and fish caps as well, and a multi, if you want, and fat burner.

Day 2, 4:17 PM.

My stomach is feeling somewhat nauseated and nasty. I got a diet soda from the vending machine to calm it down a bit. Let's see if I can get through tonight without eating solid food.

I would imagine this diet has a bit of detoxing associated with it if you aren't used to squeaky clean eating already. Hope you feel better :( Thanks for letting me use your thread for some knowledge ;)

Detoxing is a myth. The human body does not store toxins. That's what your renal system, digestive system, and liver are for. The only exception to this is heavy metals, which must be removed by chelation therapy as administered by a medical professional (not some "alternative medicine" clown). No amount of diet modification will remove heavy metals from the body.

I used At Large's Nitrean when I did the diet. It is a Casein/Whey blend with similar ratios to the protein the diet suggests on T-Nation. It was almost half the price and I got awesome results from it. You could go the route that AJP suggested, but you will need to get the proper ratio or you will starve. I suggest the Nitrean if you cannot afford Biotest's. All of the other supplements I used were as suggested by the diets creator.

I guess I didn't mean "detox" as its literal definition. I only mean that when your body isn't used to something-like a healthier lifestyle, a change from soda to water, a weaning off of meds, an increase in fiber etc.-it tends to display symptoms of "rebellion". Most people who switch out of soda drinking will go through withdrawl symptoms of massive headaches, fatigue etc., people who adopt a healthier diet or have a change in medicine use have these same types of symptoms. I can see that if he has had an "unclean" diet in the past and went full force into this velocity diet which is very simple and clean (and low carb/calorie), that he would be having some of these same kinds of symptoms until his body adapts. out with the old, in with the new...that transition is what I was calling "detox", thats all.

You seem to have shifted your ground. What you describe is the placebo effect, nothing more, and it is based on anecdotal evidence, I hasten to add. "Detox" is a meaningless term.

I am the "he", by the way.

If it's a placebo effect then why was your stomach hurting?

It sounds like you're getting offended when sparrow was just trying to help. I may be completely incorrect though. She clarified what she meant to say, the actual definition of the term detox isn't relevant.

The point that she made, and also the exact thing that I was saying earlier, is that this diet is extreme and the individual doing it, you in this case, should have been eating really clean already, know how their body responds to variations, and have a really firm grasp on training. I am not trying to say that you don't, and like I said in previous posts, I don't know your background; that's why it would help to know your routine, what you've been doing, your previous diet, etc...just some history. Don't feel pressured to respond in detail, I'm just trying to help because I've done it in the past and have spoken to others that have as well.

Because it has no solid food in it. It is not a placebo effect for me because I do not believe that my body is ridding itself of undefined "toxins". When I mentioned the placebo effect, I was referring to people who undertake some action, such as quitting smoking, and then say, "Oh I feel like crap because I am detoxing". No, you are going through withdrawal.

I am not offended in the slightest. I am simply a scientific skeptic so I don't want pseudoscience in my journal thread. She can prattle on about detox and homeopathy and any other such thing elsewhere.

And I'm sorry, but I think the meanings of the words we use matter.

I appreciate your concern.
