The Run Challenge - Burning the Ground!

Kickball yesterday was fun, and hot, and long! I ran a lot, not consecutively of course, but had a good 7 hours in the bright, hot sun to kick and chase after balls...I am happiest that aside from some sunburn on my face, my body is not toast like it would have been had I not started training. I am happy that I feel "worked out" but able to go back after it again today!

OK, I just had to post that little update before FF comes back with stories about a REAL athletic event! ha ha

Here is a real athletic event:

My balls swing when I run.

Can you chase me for exercise? (Just Kidding!!!!!!!!!!) insert "swinging" smiley's!!

Keep goen' girl!

Best regards,

Chillen ----------> :)

I competed in the Escape from the Rock triathlon yesterday. It's a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz, followed by a 2.5 mile run to the transition area, 13 hilly miles through the Presidio, ending with a 6.2 mile run up to the Golden Gate, down to Baker Beach to slog through the deep sand and up the infamous "Sand Ladder" which is essentially an ascent up the cliff on soft sandy steps.

I placed 4th in my age group, 29th overall and my splits are as follows:

Swim ---- 00:39:07.6
Run1 ---- 00:19:42.4
T1 ------ 00:01:30.3
Bike ----- 00:46:04.5
T2 ------ 00:00:51.1
Run ----- 00:39:30.1
Finish --- 02:26:46.0

Fantastic! How old are you?

Even more impressive at your age. I'm a 49yo male 2-time cardiac patient who's only been interested in triathlons for less than a year. Your current times would be my lofty career goals.

Holy smokes... what's more impressive is that you're turning things around. That's incredible! Do you have any races coming up?

Tsi,

Thanks. I had a stent for atherosclerosis in November '06 and a replacement ascending aortic arch and aortic valve operation in April '08. I do not know what a typical recovery time is, but I was out of the hospital in 3 days and caused a stir with the cardiologist because of my 49 resting heart rate. Every day is a new day to get in the best shape of my life.

Yes, I am racing in the Tri for your Cause sprint tri here in Boulder, CO, this Saturday, 750m, 26 miles, 4 miles. Today, I swam the reservoir to assess the conditions - cold, murky, green and surprisingly wavy - and determine what wetsuit will work best for me.

Yup... it's amazing how a trip to the hospital like that will change your attitude.

Cool... I look forward to the race report.

Enjoying reading about everyones running accomplishments. Nice job FF. That's awesome. Was planning a long run for today, but cut it short due to the pain I'm in from the "burpee challenge". Is anyone still doing this challenge?

tsilcyc-looks like we roam in the same circles. You have conquered some respectable races! Nice job!

I'm also doing CIM in December..but I won't be running sub 7's :)

Your blog is very entertaining. I especially like the "'A' is for Athlete" blog :D

It's crazy, I travel for races often but it seems like I know a TON of people doing CIM. I live not too far from it but I live not too far from other races as well. It's a pretty well known race to qualify for Boston so maybe that's it.

re: Blog. It's my outlet for when I'm not training and a way for me to chronicle my thoughts. "A" is for Athlete... my secret is out. :) Thanks for reading!

CIM has gathered a lot of strength and reputation over the years, thats for sure. Its in my backyard, which is the only reason I'm doing it over L.A, because I'd rather do L.A.

I was nodding and chuckling most of your "A is for..." post because its very very true. You write your thoughts well

Completed duatholon today in New England...hilly new england!! 20 mile ride and 5 mile trail run...1 hour 43 minutes. Talk about hills!! One particular hill was about a 9-10 minute ascent to the top. Always ride in my big gear but had to go down to the middle....little disappointing but had no choice. It was a very tough ride... run was a little easier.

I ride with a group of people in my area and we ride for various charitable orgs. in the local area. Only about 30 or so people. A good friend of mine that I've known since junior high is a semi-pro womens cyclecross. She's tough and really moves. She pulls me on a lot of rides and races and its nice to draft off of her. She is the reason why we moved today. I love racing with her because she's strong. She actually did the trail run with me but I know she could've smoked me. The run was actually exactly 4.9 miles. This is a race we do every year at this time and we have a good time. With that said, I definitely must say I tapped myself to the max today and I've had a damn headache all day.

Its a 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike and 5K run. Its considered a "mini" tri. I'm not a very accomplished swimmer as a matter of fact I don't even like the water. I can swim and we have a pool in our back yard but mostly fun kinda swimming. The water freaks me out. I did a practice swim last night at a friends house on the lake and at first I was so scared I felt frozen. I convinced myself to relax and then just did it but my time wasn't so great. We have had some tragedy in my extended family regarding children and accidental drownings (in the bath tub no less) and I don't think I ever really recovered from this. As a matter of fact I was so freaked out in the lake last night that I was pleading with my almost 15 year old to stay in the boat and not swim and he's an excellent swimmer and loves the water. Sooo, this experience (the swimming part) will be good if I can just do it and get over it! Thats my hope!
