I may complicate matters a bit, but my goal here is to provide you differing opinions on milk (opinions for cow Milk and opinions Against cow Milk).

On the surface, the lower the wrong type of fat content, while maximizing (or getting the same or simuliar) nutrient base, with milk is the way to go, if one wants to drink milk.

One cannot equate cow milk with the rich nutrient dense and fat rich human breast milk given to infants by the mother (there NOT the same)---just thought I say that. In addition, when the infant is feeding on human breast milk, even the feces from the infant----is SWEET smelling and doesnt have the stink we all share in common. However, once the switch is made to canned infant milk or regular milk, then the infant's feces, STINKS.

Interesting contrast.......no? I know this by my own experience with my kids when they were little. Now, this is just when the infant is consuming just milk at first, and no hard or soft food items in the diet. The diet can speak volumes in what is absorbed, and then what comes out the other end.........Im not being funny (LOL). THE DIET IS KING, my friends.

I Love Cows Milk, But It Doesn't Love Me

I grew up drinking and loving cows milk. As I grew older and more health conscious I changed from whole milk to low fat milk thinking I was doing my body good!
From time to time, however, I would hear warnings about drinking milk. I didn’t understand why some nutrition minded experts were saying cow’s milk was bad. After all, my doctors seemed to agree with the many dairy association slogans. The message I heard all my life was, “You need to eat plenty of dairy if you want healthy bones and teeth.” As most American women do, as I got older, I also became very concerned about osteoporosis.

Finally, because of some personal and family health concerns, I decided to get to the bottom of this milk matter.

Here’s what I discovered…

First, let’s talk about the calcium scare…

While it is true that milk is calcium rich, most people don’t realize it is also phosphorous rich. Phosphorus combines with calcium in the intestines and prevents the calcium in milk from being absorbed! Additionally, drinking pasteurized milk creates an acidic body. A healthy body pH is around 7.4 or slightly alkaline. Since calcium is a nice buffer or neutralizer for acid, when the body becomes acidic, like when a person drinks milk, the body will naturally draw calcium away from the bones and teeth in an attempt to restore a healthy pH.

So while it’s true everybody needs calcium, milk appears to be one of the least effective ways of obtaining usable calcium. Furthermore there is confusion on what is an effective recommended daily allowance for calcium. For example our own National Academy of Science recommends 800 milligrams, the United Kingdom recommends 500 milligrams and the World Health Organization recommends 400 to 500.

Next, I discovered that cow’s milk is linked to a large number of common illnesses and diseases. According to Frank Oski, former Director of the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins, in his book Don't Drink Your Milk, Diarrhea, cramps, gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, recurrent ear infections and even diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and leukemia have all been linked to cow’s milk. Though it is unclear why there is a link between milk consumption and some of these diseases, Dr. Colin Campbell, in his book The China Study, makes some keen observations…

He hypothesizes that because the protein in milk is difficult for many people to digest, the body treats the undigested protein that makes its way into the blood stream, as a foreign invader. The body naturally develops antibodies to attack these foreign protein invaders.

Unfortunately, the foreign proteins look similar to some of the proteins present in various organ systems. That’s when the disease formation occurs. The antibodies made to attack the foreign proteins now also begin to attack the look-a-like proteins in the organs themselves. This may lead to a whole host of various diseases.

So what’s a person to do to ensure they are getting the calcium they need? Begin by following a nutrition plan that maximizes the absorption of calcium into your blood and bones and teeth, a nutrition plan that creates an alkaline environment in your body.

You can begin to accomplish this by avoiding animal protein. High protein diets have been shown to result in more calcium losses (animal protein creates an acidic body environment). Next, make sure you eat plenty of broccoli, leafy green vegetables, kale and a variety of legumes that are rich in calcium and promote a healthy body pH.

Processing Is the Problem

The path that transforms healthy milk products into allergens and carcinogens begins with modern feeding methods that substitute high-protein, soy-based feeds for fresh green grass and breeding methods to produce cows with abnormally large pituitary glands so that they produce three times more milk than the old fashioned scrub cow. These cows need antibiotics to keep them well.

Their milk is then pasteurized so that all valuable enzymes are destroyed (lactase for the assimilation of lactose; galactase for the assimilation of galactose; phosphatase for the assimilation of calcium).

Literally dozens of other precious enzymes are destroyed in the pasteurization process. Without them, milk is very difficult to digest. The human pancreas is not always able to produce these enzymes; over-stress of the pancreas can lead to diabetes and other diseases.

The butterfat of commercial milk is homogenized, subjecting it to rancidity. Even worse, butterfat may be removed altogether. Skim milk is sold as a health food, but the truth is that butter-fat is in milk for a reason.

Without it the body cannot absorb and utilize the vitamins and minerals in the water fraction of the milk. Along with valuable trace minerals and short chain fatty acids, butterfat is America's best source of preformed vitamin A.

Synthetic vitamin D, known to be toxic to the liver, is added to replace the natural vitamin D complex in butterfat. Butterfat also contains re-arranged acids which have strong anti-carcinogenic properties.

Non-fat dried milk is added to 1% and 2% milk. Unlike the cholesterol in fresh milk, which plays a variety of health promoting roles, the cholesterol in non-fat dried milk is oxidized and it is this rancid cholesterol that promotes heart disease.

Like all spray dried products, non-fat dried milk has a high nitrite content. Non-fat dried milk and sweetened condensed milk are the principle dairy products in third world countries; use of ultra high temperature pasteurized milk is widespread in Europe.

Other Factors Regarding Milk

Milk and refined sugar make two of the largest contributions to food induced ill health in our country. That may seem like an overly harsh statement, but when one examines the evidence, this is a reasonable conclusion.

The recent approval by the FDA of the use of BGH (Bovine Growth Hormone) by dairy farmers to increase their milk production only worsens the already sad picture.

BGH causes an increase in an insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in the milk of treated cows. IGF-1 survives milk pasteurization and human intestinal digestion. It can be directly absorbed into the human bloodstream, particularly in infants.

It is highly likely that IGF-1 promotes the transformation of human breast cells to cancerous forms. IGF-1 is also a growth factor for already cancerous breast and colon cancer cells, promoting their progression and invasiveness.

It is also possible for us to absorb the BGH directly from the milk. This will cause further IGF-1 production by our own cells.

BGH will also decrease the body fat of cows. Unfortunately, the body fat of cows is already contaminated with a wide range of carcinogens, pesticides, dioxin, and antibiotic residues. When the cows have less body fat, these toxic substances are then transported into the cows' milk.

BGH also causes the cows to have an increase in breast infections for which they must receive additional antibiotics.

Prior to BGH, 38%of milk sampled nationally was already contaminated by illegal residues of antibiotics and animal drugs. This will only increase with the use of BGH. One can only wonder what the long term complications will be for drinking milk that has a 50% chance it is contaminated with antibiotics.

There is also a problem with a protein enzyme called xanthine oxidase which is in cow's milk. Normally, proteins are broken down once you digest them.

However, when milk is homogenized, small fat globules surround the xanthine oxidase and it is absorbed intact into your blood stream. There is some very compelling research demonstrating clear associations with this absorbed enzyme and increased risks of heart disease.

Ear specialists frequently insert tubes into the ear drums of infants to treat recurrent ear infections. It has replaced the previously popular tonsillectomy to become the number one surgery in the country.

Unfortunately, most of these specialists don't realize that over 50% of these children will improve and have no further ear infections if they just stop drinking their milk.

This is a real tragedy. Not only is the $3,000 spent on the surgery wasted, but there are some recent articles supporting the likelihood that most children who have this procedure will have long term hearing losses.

It is my strong recommendation that you discontinue your milk products. If you find this difficult, I would start for several weeks only, and reevaluate how you feel at that time.

This would include ALL dairy, including skim milk and Lact-Aid milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. If you feel better after several weeks you can attempt to rotate small amounts of one form of milk every four days.

You probably are wondering what will happen to your bones and teeth if you stop milk. The majority of the world's population takes in less than half the calcium we are told we need and yet they have strong bones and healthy teeth.

Cows' milk is rich in phosphorous which can combine with calcium -- and can prevent you from absorbing the calcium in milk. The milk protein also accelerates calcium excretion from the blood through the kidneys.

This is also true when you eat large amount of meat and poultry products. Vegetarians will need about 50% less calcium than meat eaters because they lose much less calcium in their urine.

It is possible to obtain all your calcium from dark green vegetables (where do you think the cow gets their's from?). The darker the better. Cooked collard greens and kale are especially good. If you or your child is unable to take in large amounts of green vegetables, you might want to supplement with calcium.

If you can swallow pills, we have an excellent, inexpensive source called Calcium Citrate, which has a number of other minerals which your body requires to build up maximally healthy bone.

It is much better than a simple calcium tablet. You can take about 1,000 mg a day. For those who already suffer from osteoporosis, the best calcium supplement is microcrystalline hydroxyapatite.

It is also important that you take vitamin D in the winter months from November to March. Normally your skin converts sunshine to vitamin D, but the sunshine levels in the winter are very low unless you visit Florida or Mexico type areas.

Most people obtain their vitamin D from milk in the winter; so if you stop it, please make sure you are taking calcium with vitamin D or a multi vitamin with vitamin D to prevent bone thinning.

Most people are not aware that the milk of most mammals varies considerably in its composition. For example, the milk of goats, elephants, cows, camels, wolves, and walruses show marked differences, in their content of fats, protein, sugar, and minerals. Each was designed to provide optimum nutrition to the young of the respective species. Each is different from human milk.

In general, most animals are exclusively breast-fed until they have tripled their birth weight, which in human infants occurs around the age of one year. In no mammalian species, except for the human (and domestic cat) is milk consumption continued after the weaning period. Calves thrive on cow milk. Cow's milk is designed for calves.

Cow's milk is the number one allergic food in this country. It has been well documented as a cause in diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, skin rashes, atherosclerosis, and acne.

It is the primary cause of recurrent ear infections in children. It has also been linked to insulin dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, and leukemia.

Hopefully, you will reconsider your position on using milk as a form of nourishment. Small amounts of milk or milk products taken infrequently, will likely cause little or no problems for most people.

However, the American Dairy Board has done a very effective job of marketing this product. Most people believe they need to consume large, daily quantities of milk to achieve good health. NOTHING could be further from the truth.

Public health officials and the National Dairy Council have worked together in this country to make it very difficult to obtain wholesome, fresh, raw dairy products. Nevertheless, they can be found with a little effort. In some states, you can buy raw milk directly from farmers.

Whole, pasteurized, non-homogenized milk from cows raised on organic feed is now available in many gourmet shops and health food stores. It can be cultured to restore enzyme content, at least partially. Cultured buttermilk is often more easily digested than regular milk; it is an excellent product to use in baking.

Many shops now carry whole cream that is merely pasteurized (not ultra pasteurized like most commercial cream); diluted with water, it is delicious on cereal and a good substitute for those allergic to milk.

Milk: It Does a Body Good?
It all depends on where it comes from, doesn't it?

The subject of milk sparks just about as much controversy as the subject of fats. Many alternative practitioners feel that it's not necessary for humans to consume cow's milk and link its consumption to health problems, such as ear infections, allergies, cancer and diabetes. On the other hand, the medical community has convinced us that if we don't drink enough milk our bones will disintegrate. And the American Dairy Association wants us to think we'll be cool like celebrities with milk mustaches if we drink lots of milk.

The purpose of this article is not to convince you to drink milk or not to drink milk. Instead, it addresses those who do--or would like to--drink milk and consume dairy products. If you fit into this category, then you need to know where your milk has come from and what it has been through.

LIVING CONDITIONS
If I were to ask you to picture a cow, you would most likely see in your mind a cow grazing in an open pasture, like one you'd probably seen before on a small family farm. That's a lucky cow, compared to most of the cows bred for dairy production in this country. The majority of commercial dairy cows don't have the luxury of grazing on open fields. Instead they are kept in intense confinement, in individual stalls, on hard cement floors, hooked up to milking machines, forced to produce milk ten months out of the year, in an overcrowded building. This is how the average commercial dairy cow spends her short, miserable life--42 months on average, compared to 12-15 years for a cow on pasture.

ENVIRONMENT
Not only is the unnatural building environment a problem for the cow, but it can be a huge problem for the people around it as well. The massive amount of waste produced on a factory farm is overwhelming and can have devastating effects on the surrounding environment. Over one-fifth of the country's dairy products are produced in the central valley of California where confinement operations create as much waste as a city of 21 million people! Much of that waste is forced unnaturally into the environment, polluting our lakes, rivers and streams. On the other hand, small farms are able to recycle manure back into the earth to enrich the soil.

FEED
A cow's natural diet consists mostly of grass, but since there isn't enough grass to go around on the factory farm, today's factory cow is fed a diet of mostly grain, and other things" that they would not normally eat. The bulk of the feed consists of corn and soy, which receives 80 percent of all herbicides used in the US. When we think of pesticides we usually think of produce, but animal products can contain up to 14 times more pesticides than plants!1

Simply switching the cow's diet from grass to grain can cause many problems, but that's only the beginning. According to a recent article in US News & World Report, Some 40 billion pounds a year of slaughterhouse wastes like blood, bone and viscera, as well as the remains of millions of euthanized cats and dogs passed along by veterinarians and animal shelters, are rendered annually into livestock feed

. . . . Animal-feed manufacturers and farmers also have begun using or trying out dehydrated food garbage, fats emptied from restaurant fryers and grease traps, cement-kiln dust, even newspapers and cardboard that are derived from plant cellulose. Researchers in addition have experimented with cattle and hog manure, and human sewage sludge."2

When I first read this I thought there were probably only a handful of farmers crazy enough to feed dead cats and dogs and other animals parts to their vegetarian cows, but I was dead wrong! During the BSE scare, the FDA ordered a halt to feeding all slaughterhouse wastes to cattle and sheep in the US. At that time 75 percent of the nation's 90 million cattle had been eating feed containing slaughterhouse by-products!

Like humans, animals need nutrients to thrive and be healthy. Obviously the feed given to factory farmed cows is not intended to provide proper nourishment. Instead, farmers, or shall I say food manufacturers, are interested in stuffing whatever they can into the cows to bulk them up as quickly as possible. This can quickly lead to sick animals and heavy doses of drugs. Like pesticides, these drugs end up in the milk of the dairy animals, as do trans fats from bakery wastes, undigested proteins from soy and animal foods and aflatoxins from moldy grain. To make matters worse, levels of vitamin A and D drop off precipitously when cows are given any feed other than green growing grass.

ANTIBIOTICS
If you're like a growing number of people today, you would rather not take antibiotics when you get sick. You may even be proud of the fact that you haven't had to use them in years. However, if you drink commercial milk or eat commercially raised meats and poultry, you could be consuming antibiotics on a daily basis,without even knowing it! Over 50 percent of all the antibiotics produced in this country are mixed directly into animal feed. Ideally, antibiotics should be used in farming only when necessary to treat infection. However, due to the sickly nature of factory farmed animals, they are fed a constant supply of antibiotics from birth until the time of slaughter.

Antibiotic resistance is a serious issue that has gotten a lot of press in recent years. Basically, bacteria are mutating and outsmarting the antibiotics, making them ineffective. (The same phenomenon is occurring on farms where bugs are mutating to withstand pesticide applications.) We criticize medical doctors for over-prescribing antibiotics, but that is only part of the problem. Not only are antibiotics overused in this country, but they are also over-consumed. People are unknowingly consuming more antibiotics than they are actually taking by choice. Due to the heavy doses of antibiotics used on factory farmed animals, your steaks, hamburgers, chicken, and hotdogs are all laced with antibiotics. Milk alone contains traces of up to 80 different antibiotics!3

HORMONES
Back in 1930, the average dairy cow produced 12 pounds (about a gallon and a half) of milk per day. In 1988, the average was 39 pounds per day. This was accomplished by selective breeding to obtain dairy cows that produced a lot of pituitary hormones, thereby generating large amounts of milk. But the industry was not satisfied with this output. Today rBGH, a synthetic growth hormone, is used to get even more milk out of the dairy cows, bringing the average up to 50 pounds (over 6 gallons) of milk per day.

This sounds like a great thing for dairy farmers, right? However, when you mess with Mother Nature, you will suffer the consequences. FDA documents show that cows injected with rBGH are 79 percent more likely to contract mastitis.4 In 1991, a report on Monsanto's BGH test herd at the University of Vermont found the same kinds of problems identified by the FDA, plus an alarming number of dead and deformed calves born to cows treated with BGH.5 Other problems include reproductive difficulties, increased need for antibiotics, digestive problems, enlarged hocks and lesions, and foot problems.

According to the Humane Farming Association, The FDA admits that BGH injections increase sickness and drug use in dairy cows. Consumer's Union reports that because of increased udder infections, it is more likely that milk from treated cows will be of lower quality--containing more pus and bacteria--than milk from untreated cows."6

PASTEURIZATION
Pasteurization is a process of heat treating milk to kill bacteria. Although Louis Pasteur developed this technique for preserving beer and wine, he was not responsible for applying it to milk. That was done at the end of the 1800s as a temporary solution until filthy urban dairies could find a way to produce cleaner milk. But instead of cleaning up milk production, dairies used pasteurization as a way to cover up dirty milk. As milk became more mass produced, pasteurization became necessary for large dairies to increase their profits. So the public then had to be convinced that pasteurized milk was safer than raw milk. Soon raw milk consumption was blamed for all sorts of diseases and outbreaks until the public was finally convinced that pasteurized milk was superior to milk in its natural state.

Today if you mention raw milk, many people gasp and utter ridiculous statements like, You can die from drinking raw milk!" But the truth is that there are far more risks from drinking pasteurized milk than unpasteurized milk. Raw milk naturally contains healthy bacteria that inhibit the growth of undesirable and dangerous organisms. Without these friendly bacteria, pasteurized milk is more susceptible to contamination. Furthermore, modern equipment, such as milking machines, stainless steel tanks and refrigerated trucks, make it entirely possible to bring clean, raw milk to the market anywhere in the US.

Not only does pasteurization kill the friendly bacteria, it also greatly diminishes the nutrient content of the milk. Pasteurized milk has up to a 66 percent loss of vitamins A, D and E. Vitamin C loss usually exceeds 50 percent. Heat affects water soluble vitamins and can make them 38 percent to 80 percent less effective. Vitamins B6 and B12 are completely destroyed during pasteurization. Pasteurization also destroys beneficial enzymes, antibodies and hormones. Pasteurization destroys lipase (an enzyme that breaksdown fat), which impairs fat metabolism and the ability to properly absorb fat soluble vitamins A and D. (The dairy industry is aware of the diminished vitamin D content in commercial milk, so they fortify it with a form of this vitamin.)

We have all been led to believe that milk is a wonderful source of calcium, when in fact, pasteurization makes calcium and other minerals less available. Complete destruction of phosphatase is one method of testing to see if milk has been adequately pasteurized. Phosphatase is essential for the absorption of calcium.

ULTRAPASTEURIZATION
As the dairy industry has become more concentrated, many processing plants have switched to ultrapasteurization, which involves higher temperatures and longer treatment times. The industry says this is necessary because many microorganisms have become heat resistant and now survive ordinary pasteurization.

Another reason for ultrapasteurization is that it gives the milk a longer shelf life--up to four weeks. The grocers like this but many consumers complain of a burnt or dead taste. The milk is virtually sterile--is that what you want to drink?

Milk producers are not advertising the fact that they are ultrapasteurizing the milk--the word is written in very small letters and the milk is sold in the refrigerator section even though it can be kept unrefrigerated until opened. Horizon, the major organic brand, is ultrapasteurized, as are virtually all national brands.

HOMOGENIZATION
Milk straight from the cow contains cream, which rises to the top. Homogenization is a process that breaks up the fat globules and evenly distributes them throughout the milk so that they do not rise. This process unnaturally increases the surface area of fat exposing it to air, in which oxidation occurs and increases the susceptibility to spoilage. Homogenization has been linked to heart disease and atherosclerosis.

MILK: TO DRINK OR NOT TO DRINK?
Considering how modern commercial milk is produced and processed, it's no wonder that millions of Americans are allergic to it. An allergic reaction to dairy can cause symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting (even projectile vomiting), stomach pain, cramping, gas, bloating, nausea, headaches, sinus and chest congestion, and a sore, or scratchy throat. Milk consumption has been linked to many other health conditions as well, such as asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, chronic infections (especially upper respiratory and ear infections), obesity, osteoporosis and cancer of the prostate, ovaries, breast and colon.

Once you understand how modern milk is produced and processed, it seems logical to just avoid it altogether. But Real Milk--full-fat, unprocessed milk from pasture-fed cows--contains vital nutrients like fat-soluble vitamins A and D, calcium, vitamin B6, B12, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid naturally occurring in grass-fed beef and milk that reduces body fat and protects against cancer). Real milk is a source of complete protein and is loaded with enzymes. Raw milk contains beneficial bacteria that protect against pathogens and contribute to a healthy flora in the intestines. Culturing milk greatly enhances its probiotic and enzyme content, making it a therapeutic food for our digestive system and overall health.

So the answer to the question is--go ahead and drink milk only if you can get unprocessed milk from pastured cows. In the meantime, here are a few steps that can help you make the transition to more natural dairy products.

STEP 1: REMOVE COMMERICAL MILK FROM YOUR DIET
Normally I propose a step-by step process for making a dietary change, but considering where commercial milk has come from, and what it has been through, it is best to just remove it from the diet altogether. Instead use some of the better quality dairy products such as raw cheese, good quality whole yogurt, butter and cream that has not been ultrapasteurized. (You can use butter or cream mixed with water on breakfast porridge.) Check the Weston A. STEP 2: FIND A SOURCE OF REAL MILK IN YOUR AREA
In states like California, this is easy because raw milk is sold in health food stores. In other states you need to either purchase raw milk from a farm or through a cow-share program. The best place to start is by contacting your local chapter or visiting the realmilk.com website. Most people who cannot tolerate commercial milk do beautifully on Real Milk--milk that comes from pastured cows, that contains all the fat and that is unprocessed. It is an especially good food for growing children who need extra nutrients during their growing years.

National Nutrition Month is a Reminder to Make Dairy Part of Your Diet

Washington, DC., March 4, 2005 - March is National Nutrition Month,® the time when dietitians and other health professionals encourage all of us to pay attention to what we eat. This annual call to action to make informed food choices is even more important for growing kids and teens.

America’s youth are in a calcium crisis - they need more milk and milk products more often. During teen years, half of all bone is formed and about 15 percent of adult height is added.

"The positive link between the calcium in dairy and good bone health has been established by decades of research," says Greg Miller, Ph.D. and senior vice president of nutrition research for the National Dairy Council. "Milk and milk products play a valuable role in the diet, and it's extremely difficult to get the calcium kids need without them."

Bone Up

Bone health is an important issue for kids and teens who are in a critical stage of development when it comes to building strong bones. Yet currently there are an estimated 34 million people at risk for osteoporosis, according to the 2004 Surgeon General’s Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis. The report emphasizes the importance of prevention strategies such as including calcium and vitamin D-rich foods - like milk, cheese and yogurt - in the diet.

In addition, the new U.S. Dietary Guidelines highlight calcium as a "nutrient of concern" among children and adolescents and recommend dairy (3 servings a day) because milk and milk products provide so many of the key nutrients that Americans are lacking in their diet.

Experts Agree

Research from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, by prominent calcium and bone expert Robert P. Heaney, MD, of Creighton University in Omaha suggests that a diet devoid of milk and milk products could lead to bone fractures. Heaney’s review of 139 studies exploring the relationship between bone health and calcium intake, which included more than 50 controlled interventions, is one of the most comprehensive analysis of the research on the connection between dairy and bone strength.

Dr. Heaney isn’t alone in advocating a calcium-rich diet. The consensus among medical and nutrition experts is that milk and milk products are very important for healthy bones. Many other health and nutrition experts agree on milk and milk products for healthy bones.

In addition, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) has for several years run an extensive, publicly funded education program called "Milk Matters," which focuses on why milk is essential in the bone development of kids and teens.

Facts about milk

A standard 8-oz. serving of milk provides good to excellent sources of nine essential nutrients, making it one of the most nutrient-dense foods. This means it provides a high level of essential nutrients compared to its calories. In fact, each serving of milk provides 10% or more of the recommended daily intake for calcium, vitamin D (if fortified), protein, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin B12, riboflavin and phosphorus.

Milk is well known as an excellent source of calcium. Regardless of its fat content, milk provides about 300 milligrams of calcium per serving (8 fluid ounces). The chart below provides information on the calcium content of fluid milk products per serving. A diet that includes three servings of milk (or other comparable dairy foods) each day provides enough calcium and other nutrients that may help reduce the risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure and colon cancer.

It is difficult to obtain enough calcium without consuming milk (or other dairy foods). To help meet calcium requirements, the following number of servings of milk (or its equivalent) is recommended each day:

Children 4 to 8: 3 servings
Children 9 to 18: 4 servings
Adults 19 to 50: 3 servings

Calcium: 30% Daily Value
An 8-oz serving of milk provides 30% of the Daily Value of calcium. Calcium helps build and maintain strong bones and teeth. This mineral also plays an important role in nerve function, muscle contraction and blood clotting.

Vitamin D: 25% Daily Value
When fortified, a glass of milk provides about 25% of the Daily Value for vitamin D. Vitamin D helps promote the absorption of calcium and enhances bone mineralization. Milk is one of the few dietary sources of this important nutrient.

Protein: 16% Daily Value
The protein in milk is high quality, which means it contains all of the essential amino acids in the proportions that the body requires for good health. Protein builds and repairs muscle tissue and serves as a source of energy during high-powered endurance exercise. An 8-oz glass of milk provides about 16% of the Daily Value for protein.

Potassium: 11% Daily Value
Potassium regulates the body’s fluid balance and helps maintain normal blood pressure. It’s also needed for muscle activity and contraction.

Vitamin A: 6%-10% Daily Value
A glass of 2%, 1% or fat-free milk provides 10% of the Daily Value of vitamin A; a glass of whole milk provides 6%. This nutrient helps maintain normal vision and skin. It also helps regulate cell growth and maintains the integrity of the immune system.

Vitamin B12: 13% Daily Value
Vitamin B12 helps build red blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to working muscles. Just one 8-oz glass of milk provides about 13% of the Daily Value for this vitamin.

Riboflavin: 24% Daily Value
Milk is an excellent source of riboflavin, providing 24% of the Daily Value. Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, helps convert food into energy—a process crucial for exercising muscles.

Niacin: 10% Dietary Reference Intake (or Niacin equivalent)
Niacin is important for the normal function of many enzymes in the body, and is involved in the metabolism of sugars and fatty acids. A glass of milk provides 10% of the Dietary Reference Intake for niacin.

Phosphorus: 20% Daily Value
Phosphorus helps strengthen bones and generates energy in the body’s cells. Milk is an excellent source of phosphorus, providing 20% of the Daily Value.

Varieties of fluid milk
Milk has long been a popular beverage, not only for its flavor, but because of its unique nutrient package.

Whole milk (3.25% fat) contains about 150 calories and about 8 grams of fat per serving (8 ounces). Although not required, whole milk may be fortified with vitamin D at a level of 400 International Units (IU) per quart. If vitamin D is added, the label must state this fact.

2% reduced-fat milk (2% fat) contains about 120 calories and about 5 grams of fat per serving (8 ounces). Vitamin A is removed with the milkfat. For this reason, Vitamin A must be added to 2% reduced-fat milk so that it contains at least 1,200 IU of vitamin A per quart, although 2,000 IU are typically added based on FDA recommendations. Vitamin D is added to virtually all milk at a level of 400 IU of Vitamin D per quart. The addition of these vitamins must be stated on the label.

1% lowfat milk (also called light milk) (1% fat) contains 100 calories and 2.5 grams of fat per serving (8 ounces). Vitamin A is removed with the milkfat. For this reason, Vitamin A must be added to 1% lowfat milk so that it contains at least 1,200 IU of vitamin A per quart, although 2,000 IU are typically added based on FDA recommendations. Vitamin D is added to virtually all milk at a level of 400 IU of Vitamin D per quart. The addition of these vitamins must be stated on the label.

Fat-free milk (also called skim or nonfat milk) (0% fat) contains 80 calories and 0 grams of fat per serving (8 ounces). Vitamin A is removed with the milkfat. For this reason, Vitamin A must be added to fat-free milk so that it contains at least 1,200 IU of vitamin A per quart, although 2,000 IU are typically added based on FDA recommendations. Vitamin D is added to virtually all milk at a level of 400 IU of Vitamin D per quart. The addition of these vitamins must be stated on the label.

Skim deluxe or skim supreme milk looks like and has the mouthfeel of 2% reduced-fat milk as a result of the addition of a small amount of dietary fiber to the milk. This milk is an option to provide the look and mouthfeel of 2% lowfat or whole milk without the extra calories and fat.

Acidophilus/Bifidobacteria milk is a lowfat or nonfat milk to which acidophilus and bifidobacteria cultures have been added. There is some evidence that these cultures have unique health benefits, such as improving lactose digestion, lowering blood pressure and promoting a better balance of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Chocolate milk (fat-free, 1% lowfat, 2% reduced-fat, whole milk) is milk to which chocolate or cocoa and a sweetener have been added. This milk is just as nutritious as its unflavored counterpart. Compared to plain milk, chocolate milk contains about 60 more calories per serving (8 ounces).

Evaporated milk (6.5% fat) is made by removing about 60% of the water from whole milk. The milk is then homogenized, fortified with vitamin D to a level of 25 IU per 1 ounce, canned and heat sterilized. The addition of vitamin A is optional. If added, each fluid ounce must contain not less than 125 IU of vitamin A.

Evaporated fat-free milk (0.5% fat or less) is a concentrated, fat-free (skim or nonfat) milk that has been fortified with vitamins A and D, canned and sterilized.

Sweetened condensed milk (8% fat or less) is a canned milk concentrate of whole milk to which sugar has been added. The sweetener used (usually sucrose) prevents spoilage. Sweetened condensed fat-free milk contains no more than 0.5% milkfat.

The Judgement of others and/or being overly judgemental of others can cause internal and external poison, and hamper true circumference of clear vision. Does one look at another and truely see? Making decisions. We all make them all the time. Big
decisions and little decisions. We make big decisions such as
who we will marry, what profession or occupation we are going
to pursue, where we will work, where we will live, etc. And we
make small decisions: how we will respond to a problem that
has suddenly come up during our day, what we will fix for
dinner, what store we will go to to purchase an item that we
need or want, how we are going to respond to a question someone
has just asked us, whether we are going to study hard and do
our school lessons or not, etc. Every day is filled with a
myriad of decisions. And these decisions are often not simple.
They are often complex, involving many facets and
considerations, pros and cons. Often some kind of risk or
danger is involved and one has to assess the degree and
likelihood of that danger in making the decision. Whether one
is investing money in the stock market, choosing a spouse,
accepting a job, lending money to someone, or buying a used
car, there can be all kinds of hidden dangers. The right
decision is not always easy to know. Decisions usually involve
calling on our store of knowledge and previous experience. But
as complicated as the considerations may be, we usually quickly
assess all the many factors, make our decision, and go. And
many of these decisions we make shape and make our life. They
can make us or break us. And underneath all these decisions we
make all the time is personal judgment. Personal judgment,
good sense, discernment is what makes the world go around. It
is behind everything. It is behind all the important decisions
made in this world. It is the most important ability a person
can have. By it we all live or die. No other ability is so
important to a person as judgment and good sense.

We all must make our own decisions. No one can make them for
us. Not even those who love us most and are closest to us.
Once we are adults, of age, we can do anything we wish. We are
free to act as foolishly, as stupidly, as we wish. And we all
live with the decisions that we ourselves have made. The fool
lives with the consequences of his foolish decisions and the
wise man lives with the consequences of his wise decisions.

The quality of our life is directly related to the quality of
the decisions we make. Our life at any moment is pretty much
the end result of the accumulating aggregate of all the
decisions we have made over our lifetime.

Good decisions come from good judgment and good judgment is
closely connected with knowledge, understanding, a seeking and
inquiring mind, seriousness, and a habit of reflective thought.
Poor judgment is closely connected with ignorance, lack of
understanding, lack of reflective thought.

Closely connected with personal judgment is another important
element: personal values, outlooks and attitudes. The godly,
upright man of principle makes one kind of decisions. The
ungodly, unprincipled man makes very different kinds of
decisions.

Generally speaking the man of good judgment is that upright man
ruled by sense, reason and conscience. It is that man who does
those things tht he ought to do, those things that conscience
requires; that man who is attentive to that debt that we all
owe to ourselves, to do that which is right. Not all men are
ruled by sense, reason and conscience. The common mind is more
likely to be ruled by impulse, feeling and base appetite. It
is the godly, reflective mind that is ruled by something
higher.

We see a person engage in some foolish action or conduct. It
may be something he has done or something he has failed to do.
We ask ourselves why he did it. Why did he do that? His
action revealed an error in judgment. What causes errors in
judgment? What causes bad judgment? Bad judgment is generally
caused by distortion of judgment by some distorting agent.
What do we mean? What might this distorting agent be? What
kind of agents are we talking about? It could be one or more
of the following: laziness, cowardice, vanity, ego, pride,
anger, hatred, romantic infatuation, lust, envy, jealousy,
greed, etc. And because these distorting agents tend to be
sins we can see that foolishness and sin are closely connected.
Many of these agents, such as laziness, cowardice, or vanity,
for example, tend to be deeply engrained habits that present
themselves as character traits. A lazy person or a coward or a
vain person, for example, often makes poor judgments because of
the distorting influence of their character weaknesses. Their
weaknesses rule, distort and overpower their judgment. In the
case of a lazy person a large portion of the decisions and
actions that he makes every day may be strongly influenced or
decided by his laziness. How he does things, what he does and
doesn't do, almost everything he does, may be determined by his
laziness. Thus we see how a character defect can affect a
person's judgment and his life.

Everyone manages his own life; everyone manages his own house.
I manage my house. My wife manages her house. If one has
children each child manages his own house. No one can manage
our houses for us. We have to do it ourselves. Some people
are conscientious, work hard, manage intelligently and
responsibly, do those things that they ought to do when they
ought to do them, listen to that voice within when it speaks,
and have clean, well-swept, orderly houses. Other people are
sloppy, indifferent and careless, do nothing that they ought to
do, manage their houses stupidly and foolishly, and have dirty,
unkempt, slovenly, disorderly houses.

Dont get too caught up in the post I made about milk (the one for FF: I just wanted to post some pros and cons view on Milk for FF). Milk consumption on the lower fat end of the spectrum, is just FINE.............Drink it.

there is so much support on that article in the book of Proverbs. Proverbs is all about a wise, godly man having knowledge and fear of the Lord which gives him a firm foundation for his life, home, and family.
and all those "distorting agents" wich always come up in life can be overpowered by our knowledge and awareness of sin.

Busy Sunday: July 22, 2007

Had a fairly busy Sunday, and spent some time with my sons by going to a movie, training, and spending some quality time with the Mrs. But, I will be posting after I train this morning (23rd) (today is: Bi, TRi, MP, Squats, and Torso work).

I do want to post what I posted in the Weight loss section. I am going to post what I wrote, and clarify and expand on a few things I think need to be expanded and more detailed than what it had originally, in a subsequent post.

As I have always said, in the past, the body will tell you when your are and are not doing things correctly. Same in this case. There is never in my opinion, a bad bodily response when we are talking along these types of details. You body is telling you something, youngman, and its telling you, you are doing the wrong things, and WANTS a change to produce the results you want and/or seek. All you have to do is provide the stimulation.

The ultimate fat burner is the appropriate deficit diet, young man, and optimized and complimented with appropriate training/excercise routine on a regular basis.

A deficit diet, in itself, without any scheduled excercise program can also make one lose weight. What does this tell us? That the DIET is absolutely the Boss and everything encircles the diet, and one will lose tissue, if they are healthy and have no organ issues or other medical conditions that would or could hamper progress.

With this said, I first want to state that not feeding yourself, IS NOT a wise idea, nor the answer to your problem in weight loss. In your specific case, being inconistant instead of consistant is your problem (with what I know thus far).

This is what you need to do:

This an approxomation science, but you can narrow it down very close, if your meticulous in your vision when looking at the data.

Tweak your desire and passion by educating yourself on the basic requirements of losing fat tissue. With your age, sex, hgt, and wgt, in mind, find your approximated base calorie needs (this is organ function, breathing, or bodily function needs).

Armed with this knowledge, next figure in your approximated activity calorie expenditure (training/exercising, etc), and add this on top of the approximated base calorie need. This will give you the approximated maintenance level (or like a approximated break-even point in the caloric equation)

Apply this knowledge by backing off the approximated MT Line (approximated Maintenance line), say for example, a -500c per day, for about 1 week. Before the week begins, weigh yourself in the AM when you FIRST get up (do not eat yet) (remember your clothing, preferably with just underwear and t-shirt or like clothes). Note the time, and the approximated wgt.

Each day spread your caloric content out throughout the day (keep the body fed, with calories in the 300 to 500c approximated calories each meal), or a like division which mirrors your end caloric deficit limit (meaning MT-500c). This way you have your entire day and body encircled with nutrition (I assume you alread know to eat clean), which if your eating right, will give an approximated good energy (not optimal because your in deficit) to fuel your training and exercising schedule.

At the end of the week, on the same day, the same time, with the same like clothes, weigh yourself again. Note whether you lost or gained tissue (or weight I mean). To further assist you, I want to tell you that for every approximated caloric deficit of (-3500c), one could lose 1lb of fat tissue. (though some may not all be fat tissue, this information is for another question, and isnt presently suited here).

Now, in this example you were calculating a -500c per day deficit. There needs to be -3500c to lose approximated 1lbs of fat. Now lets do some basic math. -500cX7=-3500c. With all things considered equal, and you were meticulous and faithful on the diet, you should have been CLOSE to losing at least one pound of tissue in the week.

If this didnt happen, this means you need to make finer adjustments, and the MT line is not accurate, and you need to adjust this on your own........based upon the FEEDBACK your body is giving you, AND ask yourself how faithful you were on the diet, AND how faithful in training (whether you kept the training schedule (if you didnt, this would effect the caloric equation, no?!), AND how acurate you figured in your activities caloric wise.........but, you have the base information to begin makeing adjustments.

One can not spot reduce. Losing fat is like draining a pool. The shallow end seems to drain before the larger deeper end. One can't choose where to lose fat; it will be lost all over the body.

The Nutrients are an essential factor in the diet; however, the law of energy balance within the DIET, is the ulitmate KING while the Nutrients can play in some decisions made within the body.

Do yourself a favor, figure out your MT line, adjust off of this, eat well balanced spaced out meals (DONT EVER starve YOURSELF), AND listen to your body for the results. While you are trying to figure out your body, IT WILL PAY YOU BACK, I promise. You have to learn to MASTER yourself to become the master of weight loss for YOURSELF.

Good plain truth advice.

Dont EVER STARVE yourself especially at your young and youthful age (let alone a mature adult). Your body will resist you. Being young, you have things going on in your body that REQUIRES adequate CLEAN food consumption OVERALL (entire body), dont starve it: This is a dis-service to yourself and health I believe.

Young man, be a mind spounge and soak in all the appropriate advice you can, sort it out, and then try to make decisions based on what you learned, and then implement a plan of attack,,,,,,,and track it, you will be rewarded more than the time you took to learn it, I promise.

One of the BIGGEST part of success, is MOTIVATION, and being mentally prepared for certain mentally anticipated negatives (and knowing how, why, and when to handle them).........Your all good! GO FOR IT! Its waiting for you.......its just around the corner, smiling eagerly for your appearance! now go after it, and smack that smile off its face........LOL.

The CycleBack and CycleForward 24 hour Diet Cycle Technique, by Chillen (comparable to a zig-zag day, but not quite)

One has to learn the value of calorie manipulation around the laws of calorie balance

When I was talking earlier about learning your MT line and backing off an appropriate amount of calories, and eating there, the counsumption period is within.......a 24 hour cycle period.

However, one can do things with this 24 hour cycle period in providing more short term calories, and change up the clock, while at the same time, not letting the body get accustomed to a certain 24 hour cycle of eating patterns.

For example, say for the first week your 24 cycle clock is: 7AM to 7AM, on the 8th day, you could eat at 3AM (which is 4 hours earlier), technically your over your limit at that time, but lets say you train at 8AM (or something like that), for this period you have just provided a small surplus; however, the next day, you switch back to the 7A to 7A. Which erases (if your meticulous) the previous 4 hours the day before, and one could ramp up an excercise, say cardio, and cause a deficit instead of a balance.

I call this Cycle Back. The 24 hour clock can be anytime adjusted to your daily routine. This cycle back can assist with craving yearnings without the guilt of thinking your over eating. It feeds you and your mentality at the same time. One just has to adjust the next day as a consequence, but its something in place to assist with hunger when needed and assist the body in not adjusting to you.

Within the Cycle Back, you can also decide to leave the surplus, of say +300 or so, to allow the body to think it ate too much, and then just stay in the same 24 cycle as before (which is good to to with long term dieters---once in a while)

I use the cycle back most of the time to give the appearance of extra calories, to provide more energy--at the time for weight training, but in the end of things........the next day, it cancels out and I bring a deficit through excercise.

There is another technique I use called: Cycle Forward. Lets use the same 24 hour cycle clock, 7A to 7A, and I ate at 3A, I will push the caloric content at 3a as eating at 7a, and just push it forward, and count it within the same clock.

This is the tougher side of the equation, though, but this can used to assist cravings, but at the same time, you have to space out the meals a bit more intelligently, as you consumed some of the calories prior to the clock starting, but still counting in the same clock, so there is a consequence.

Both of these cycle types I constantly used when I lost my weight, and it worked for me and there is no doubt about it.

When I was on my quest to lose primarily fat wgt, I constantly manipulated my 24 hour diet clock cycle around my caloric content, 95% of the time I was in deficit, and this works. These are just two techniques I used as an example. I have other techniques.

I mainly wrote this short spot for the others viewing (and to show one way of MANY ways I use to adjust calories to stave off hunger, and prevent my body from getting adjusted), but once you provide your age and other information, you will have one of the other forum members provide information on the forumulas used to determine caloric needs (Like the benedict formula, and other types).

If you are in your teens, you have to remember your entire body has special needs that are independant of a mature adult. This in itself, can cause problems, may change caloric and nutrient approach techniques, and if your starving yourself............DONT DO THIS!

I lost it. I dont like my friends messed with--even if we dont see eye to eye. I want to take care of them. Friends are a priceless commodity and needs protected. Anger isnt bad if its for a good cause. Even the Lord himself got angry at times, so this isnt a sin. Though I dont feel very good right at the moment..........Got to go. it was a noble reason to get angry for though...you were only defending your friends(at least more noble than getting mad because you cant beat level 5 LOL)

hope you feel awesome after you do some chillen. is there any other reason you "dont feel very good at the moment"?
