Tea Tips and Fun Facts

Sensitive to Caffeine?
- If you steep your tea bag or tea leaves for about 30 seconds, and pour the “pre-steeped tea” water away, around 80% of the caffeine is removed. Add water to your mug again and continue to steep as usual.
Savings
- Some don’t know that you can actually brew/steep your tea more than once. Each tea is different. Some tea loses a little flavor but others, like robust teas such as chai, will remain flavorful. Steep for 1-2 minutes longer than usual the second time if you prefer.
Even More Uses
- Use left-over brews to clean windows around the house
- Dry tea can help eliminate odors in the fridge
- Add tea to compost for plants and soil
Little Known Fact
An importer named Thomas Sullivan thought that storing his tea in tins and sending them out was just too expensive. So he decided to sell them as samples to send out to his customers. He wrapped them up in gauze packets. But his customers were confused and didn’t know what to make of it. They just dumped the whole gauze into the boiling water. Accidentally, Thomas Sullivan invented the tea bags

Well I made my tea in a new pot and it just didn't taste the same. I guess it will take a while to break it in.

So many thing are invented by accident.

It's just not the same lol I know

FDA: Improper Health Claims on 2 Green Teas

The FDA has warned the manufacturers of two popular green tea beverages that some of their nutritional claims are unauthorized and in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The FDA issued warning letters to Dr Pepper Snapple Group of Plano, Texas, about its Canada Dry Sparkling Green Tea Ginger Ale regarding its Lipton Green Tea 100% Naturally Decaffeinated product.

The FDA warned the companies not to make misleading claims about nutrients in products that imply or claim to provide health benefits.

In its letter to Dr Pepper Snapple, dated Aug. 30, the FDA said the company's Canada Dry Sparkling Green Tea product makes improper claims to be "enhanced" with antioxidants.

Today I made my own herbal tea.

  1. I picked mint, lemon balm and rosemary from my garden (a sprig each)
  2. I boiled it in a pot of water for 2 minutes and then shut the heat off.
  3. I let it sit in the pot (lid on) for 20 min. The house smelled amazingly refreshing.
  4. Then poured it into 2 mugs using a strainer to catch the leaves.

It brewed a light brown color. It was very good! Later I was able to make 2 more mugs of tea since I left the pot with the remaining tea on the stove. I just re-heated it. The second time around the flavors were more prominent. I liked it best this way. This is something I will do often

Interesting combination. I don't know that I would like the rosemary in it. I have huge rosemary plants in my yard. It's one of the things the rabbits won't eat. I use it to make Italian food and in bread.
Right now I'm having a cup of chai tea.

Every single time you say you're having chai I can't resist and must have some now!!!
I know what you mean about the rosemary. I was so nervous to put it in. I thought it would come out woodsy or taste "herby" or be too savory and I was sure that it would be poured into the sink the moment I sipped it. But curiosity got the best of me and to my surprise it didn't taste bad at all (I added sweetener to it). Maybe it's because I used 1 sprig. Or maybe it's because my rosemary is still a little young. But I'll keep trying different combination of things.
I like this feeling of being able to make my own herbal tea.

FEEL THE POWA!! MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I'm a traditionalist, I guess... I drank Lipton when I was young, but I've moved to Earl Gray and English Breakfast. I'm not really into herbal tea or fruity teas or anything like that.

I've had like 6 cups of green tea in the last two hours. I have a horrid cold right now and green tea always makes me feel better, especially with a bit of honey or lemon in it :D

I like to put lemon and honey in tea when I have a sore throat. Really soothes it.

Right now Earl Gray is what I drink in the morning. pretty soon it will be too hot to drink hot tea in the evenings. I'll still have my hot morning tea but for the afternoon and evenings I will switch to iced tea.

I had Samurai Chai today and since I haven't had it in about 2 days *gasp* I MISSED it and LOVED every sip.

Later I tried another made-it-myself herbal tea. I took a sprig of lavender from my garden and boiled it. I even left it for about 4 hours in the pot after shutting the heat off. But when my husband and I went to drink some around 9pm.... we said.... "where's the lavender?"

yea... that failed... it was basically scented water lol

But I'm being too harsh. There was a slight lavender taste that could be detected if you thought for a while about it as you sit very still in a dark room with no disturbances or distractions. ^_^ LOL

Oh well. Maybe next time I'll use more lavender or add more herbs to it.

Get well Sunflower. I like to make Chamomile + Lemon + Honey Tea when I'm sick. It's really relaxing and it seems to take the cold/flu away quicker.

I checked in the Walmart but didn't see any Vanilla Carmel tea. I just have one more bag. I'll have to look around at other stores. If I still don't see any I'll call bigalow and see if they still make it.

Lavender tea. Hmmm. You're sure coming up with some different ones!

I had to share this picture! lol
(I like clean jokes and think the pic is small enough that it shouldn't offend -_-)

A tea thread!

Emerald, love your jokes and fun facts. You know your tea!

My favorite tea right now is called Good Earth (that's the brand) Sweet and Spicy herbal tea. I get mine from Trader Joe's.

Here is the ingredients:
Red rooibos, chicory root, natural flavors, rosehips, cinnamon, lemongrass, peppermint, papaya, chamomile, panax ginseng leaves, anise seed, dandelion root, ginger root, orange oil and orange peel. Contains no sugar, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. A natural source of antioxidants.

As you might gather from the ingredients, this tea has a really strong a bold flavor, so it's not for those of you who prefer mild flavors. My favorite thing about it though is that it tastes like it has sugar in it (no lie) but it absolutely doesn't. It's really uncanny. Sometimes I drink it before bed to kill a sweet tooth.

Hi Trill,
Yes Emerald has some great stories and jokes about tea!

We have Trader Joe's here in AZ. They have a lot of good stuff there.

I bought some orange oil to put in my tea. I haven't tried it yet.

Trill that sounds so yummy! I saw that in the store today too!

Biglyn, did you call Bigelow and ask them why they have a deal with the government to keep vanilla caramel off the shelves?

So I was looking for organic pesticides to spray in my garden and during my search I ran into something interesting.
(Basil deters flies from your plants by the way)
*ahem*...as I was reading more and more about basil I learned about Basil Tea.

Yes.. I said Basil Tea lol
Instructions:
2-3 basil leaves boiled in 1.5 cups of water and leave to steep for up to 3 minutes.

Apparently this has been done for thousands of years by the Indians and Egyptians.

Basil Tea Has Been Used For Thousands Of Years To Remedy

Chronic gastritis
Stomach aches
Bronchitis
Diarrhea
Fever
Fatigue
Painful menstruation
Insomnia
Anorexia <-- *gasp* "anorexia" meaning loss of appetite not the disorder

My tea has to be strong enough that you're caught between drinking it and chewing it. My favourite tea is Barry's. I live in a very hardwater area and it stil makes the most perfect cup of tea. I used to have it with sugar but not any more. I don't do small cups. The bigger the mug the better and a splash of milk. We do what is called "forgotten tea". Leave the teabag to sit in the cup for 15 minutes or so. It's hard to find over here . I go to Ireland very regularly and bring back a suitcase full. I'm waiting to be stopped someday by security questioning the possibility I'm a drug mule using tea to hide it.

If I'm feeling a bit off peppermint tea always picks me up.
