Steve's Journal

This calf issue is puzzling. I know it's in here somewhere already but can you describe this pain again? It seems to hurt without applying any kind of exercise right? IE you get up in the morning and it just hurts?

i just wrote a whole reply and lost it...SOB.

The pain depends on where it comes from.

I can run and it can be a sharp pain, a dull pain or no pain, whether on the treadmill or outside. Sometimes its bad enough that I have to walk the remainder, and sometimes its not so bad and I can finish my run to get home. It has happened with some fire calls too, hopping out of the truck if i land on my toes. That'll be a sharp pain, but I can still walk afterwards. Come to think of it, i've aggravated either calf by climbing into the truck too...

The pain sunday morning was just a dull pain and wasn't bothering me or altering my step at all, just there. I thought it was a cramping issue at first, from dehydration but it wasn't. It's still present today when I stretch my calves out, but nothing at all bothersome.

I can do calf extensions or calf raises w/o any pain at all. I haven't gone as far as testing calf extension at my body weight yet though. I usually do a lighter weight with high reps for it.

I'm starting to become concerned there is something biomechanically wrong with my calves. They have been a persistant problem for a long time now ever since the initial calf incident I had back in 2006 when I was trying to get ready for a 10 mile race in Philly. In that instance I went to move around someone on the sidewalk and suddenly there was severe pain in my left calf. It was bad enough that I had to limp home and was limping for a few days afterwards. so maybe my left calf can be explained by the previous injury and any preexisting issues that have not been resolved from it but that still doesn't explain my right calf having issues.

I've also injured both my hamstrings within the last year or so. The first was my left hamstring, last year in october. i was a stringer for a kickball game and my second at bat i went to hold up on a kick and my hammy popped. i limped for a few days afterwards. it seems ok now. I then popped my right hammy this past year during a test sprint for the fire department racing team. i was running the sprint and "pop".

That took a long time to heal and I couldn't participate in the racing at all.

Thoughts? Maybe its time to go see a podiatrist?

I sure hope its not CS...if it is...why all of a sudden am i suffering from CS? What did I do or not do that caused it after years of being active and never having calf pain....EVER.

The quick reading I did on CS doesn't make me think it's that. The severity of the pain they are describing seems to be far off from what I feel. When its bad it honestly feels like a strain or a pull.

annddddd no pain today. no discomfort either.

workout for monday: warm up on bike 10 min, heavy bench, seated row, incline bench, pullups, romanian dead lift, walking DB lunges, stretch stretch stretch!

yummy dinner too. stir fried beef, with green pepper, yellow pepper, red onion and whole grain rice. yum. beef was marinated 12 hours in a mix of Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, onion powder, mustard powder, cayenne pepper, oregano and chipotle tabasco sauce. yummmm.

had a rescue call right after making the meal and the guy in the back of the ambulance wanted to know what smelled so good. lol. left overs for lunch today. :)

haha thats sweet.

Does your calf feel better if you stretch first? How about if you do or don't stretch after a run..does either make a difference in how the next morning goes? Maybe you said something about that already..sorry if you have.

You are as tall as my husband...and I cannot imagine him weighing less than even 190. Seriously. He'd look like a skeleton! I'd say you're doing very well!

Hmm I know how frustrating injuries can be, but moreso when you can't figure out how to make them better! I'm sorry :(

My husband has a bigger build so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. He looks just right at around 195-200. I'm still not convinced though-maybe you need to throw up some pictures :D

[LONG EXPLANATION OF CALF ISSUE]

I play a doctor on the Internet and I'm baffled. I think it's time to call Dr. House. But seriously, have you been fitted for running shoes? Also, what kind of runner are you? Are you stomper?... long strides, heavy strike, head bobbing up and down?

Yes, I have been fitted for running shoes.

I try for longer strides, i have an in the middle strike and mild head bobbing.

Managed 30 mins yesterday at a 10 min/mi pace. No calf pain. Warmed up on bike, stretched thoroughly before and after. will be stretching throughout the day and trying again tonight.

great! thats encouraging :)

managed 2 more runs this week.

Ran 3 miles on the 25th and ran 4 on the 26th. no calf pain either day! my legs finally feel like they are getting into running shape. i will be leaving for florida monday morning. i plan to run down there everyday and enjoy the warm weather while I can!

Ran a 5K today. No pain! fingers crossed!

So that's 3 miles, 3 miles, 4 miles, 3.1 miles, for a total of 13.1 miles running this week. Will be upping that a bit this coming week while I am in Florida...maybe a bit over 10% more....say 15 miles. I also did 30 min of HIIT on the stationary bike yesterday. Man were my legs sore after that.

I will also be posting some more pics today once I take them, and weighing myself tomorrow morning before I leave so I can see where I am in relation to my goal weight of 180 by tomorrow (12/29). fingers crossed!
