Sparrows Experiment

Can you swim? What I mean is, can you really swim? Can you spot technique problems? :)

Yes. I swam competitively most of my life and I've coached for about 12 years. I coach the Masters group at a local gym and I'm not one of those passive coaches that gives a workout and watches the swimmers swim it. We do a ton of drills and technique stuff because thats all that really matters at the heart of it all.

Someone can swim poorly lap after lap and go somewhere, but they'll still swim poorly and wear out faster; or they can learn the right way, swim slower doing it the right way at first, but get faster over time and save the headache :)

For myself, I don't get in much. I probably swim once a week, but its enough to maintain I guess. On average I swim 2100-2200 yds in 30 min. I'd like to do more in the pool over the winter but I need to figure out my goals first!

Tsi, you're new, so we'll give you a pass, but Sparrow is our resident swim guru where all the wannabe triathlete swimmers (like me) go to for advice.:cheeky2:

Have had the stomach bug the past 2 days but I tried to get to the gym today despite it all. I had to get out of the house.

I did a quick circuit of weights, and then a cardio circuit of 20 min each: stairs, bike, eliptical. SO BORING. I hate machines. I felt okay until the last 20 min. Felt shakey and weak. Sometimes working out when you're sick actually makes you better faster-sometimes it backfires. I'll find out tomorrow how today's settled.

I had to skip my long run this morning and i was really bummed. I woke up and felt barfy so I texed my friend that she'd be running solo and went back to bed. My huge running total for the week was....FIVE MILES. lol. crud.

6 mile run. Nice and breezy. 8:20 pace

Edit: Looked at the wrong run on my garmin (it saves them all) It clicked into a run from last week. I actually went 7:52 pace today :)

Thanks.

Today did a 3000 pool swim. Felt great. It was a tame workout but good to stretch out after running last night.

12x50 odd free/even back .10 rest
12x100 getting faster in groups of 3 @ 1:40
100 back kick
12x50 free pull @1:00
200 breast kick
300 cool down

1 hour spin-strapped on the hr monitor and stayed about 150 most of the time-160ish a few times. My resting hr is 44 so that is hard work for me. My legs were tired before I even started the class.

Then 3 mile run 8:30 pace

Then 30 min full body weights-still not doing real heavy on these. Just enough to maintain. I am losing some strength though and its probably all of the cardio I'm doing. My seated rows were at one time 100 pounds and I was doing 75 today and feeling it. yikes. Squats are still 135 though, my lower body tends to hold the muscle better. Spinning helps since I stay really heavy through the class.

Someone who sees me at the gym everyday told me they thought I was an 18 yr old today. They saw my 3 kids following me into the gym and freaked out  I so don't look 18 but it was nice of them to say so. hahaha

A little silver tongued devil ;)

I wish people thought I looked 18 (I actually am, my girls I coach thought i was late 20's... :()

Keep pushing yourself, you're going well :)

The best that has happened to me recently was a drunk guy at a bar thought I was in my late 30's. Oh well, I'll take that.

Nice! I've seen a pic of you G8r, I agree, you don't look as old as you are :action2:

Well it was a chuckle because I know I don't look 18, this guy was clearly out out of touch with age ranges, but I guess its true I don't look my 31 either. I have a few times been mistaken as the babysitter when I'm out with my kids.

Most of the time I FEEL a decade older, not younger! :costumed2: :)

Fitness does generally turn the clock back for most people. We should start a thread about this-the age "other people" have percieved you to be.

The gym I go to has quite a few trophy wives running around and an equal number of young high school studs. I periodically see one of them wearing this type of shirt...

If i met you on the street i would gauge you to be mid 20's...thats based on your avatar.. haven't checked out any of your other photos recently. :jumping::jump1::cool2:

Stingo-Lol :)

Fire-there's the silver lining. What a pal :) ..and yeah mid 20's is more like it.

Tsil-Seriously? haha. "Trophy wife" has such a bad connotation to me. I'm not one of those ;) I'm sure age will catch up-especially with all the years out in the sun by the pool. Nobody can get away with that! Besides, as I said-this guy was just not "in the know" :) but he made me feel better anyway as I was rushed and tagging along 3 little dawdling munchkins behind me!

Wow, everything just sort of pales in comparison to FF's event coming up! Its almost embarrassing to post these little workouts next to him!

I eventually got to the gym to work out. I wasn't sure it was going to happen.

Took a spin class that kicked my butt. This instructor is obviously a cyclist and probably races with the best of them. He looks the part, and plays it well in his class too. Seems he's recruited half his cycling buddies to take that class too. It was super duper intense. I could hardly "keep up" honestly-and thats saying a lot, I don't go down without quite a fight-especially if I'm trying to show up a dude!

After that I went to Masters workout (the one I don't coach). I took my 7yr old son to do it with me (kind of!) it was way too easy but I was glad for it after the nazi spin class.

300 free
4x100 IM
6x50 sprint
4x100 free/back by 25's
3x100 swim/50 kick/swim
300 cool down.

I was finished with it in a half hour so I went and played with my son in the other pool.
