Sparrows Experiment

this morning they are so painful again. Just getting out of bed to walk was an ordeal. I haven't run since SATURDAY-except the little bit in that class (maybe total of a mile or something) so I'm going to go jog this morning to see how it goes.

This is a key symptom of plantar fasciitis. You definitely want to ice with the baked beans. You also might consider a night splint to stretch the plantar fascia while you're sleeping. The Strassburg Sock is an expensive product that will do the job.

Is the run this weekend your last for the season or are you continuing beyond that?

EDIT: "IF" it is PF and you do run today, you won't necessarily feel the effects of it for a couple of days. I would definitely ice right after you run.

I did run. I did 5. Initially it was painful but worked itself out. Can PF just show up like that after one odd ball workout? It seems more of a strain than an actual ailment. I think I just stretched and strained it quite a bit during the boot camp stuff. I'll keep an eye on it.

No tsil, this is just a training run race. I'm actually on course to run CIM in December.

Damn... that's right I forgot about CIM. Sorry.

PF can sneak up on you. And when you typically notice it is in the morning and it can be upto two days after a workout. It can come and go and can be managed as long as you stay on top of it.

Again, this is an Internet diagnosis so I can't be for sure but I'm going to lean that way.

This is a great site that has a TON of info on the topic, I'd check it out:

Thank you. I actually have had heel spurs before. When I first entered college I had it in my head I'd run a marathon and didn't know the first thing about injury. I just keep running on it until I was completely debilitated and forced onto crutches it hurt so much.

I will certainly be careful about what I do after that run as far as nutrition, stretching, and further activity the following week. Lukily the day after the race I am going out of town to a conference in the mountains and so besides the occassional lake hike, I'll be laying pretty low.

Thank you for looking that up for me.

Swam a relaxing 2000 yds with a little of everything included.

The arches feel so much better today. I rubbed em with arnica gel a few times yesterday and iced periodically. I think they'll be good to go tomorrow.

HALF MARATHON RACE #4

Run went great.

It was flippin freezing this morning so it did take me a while to warm into it. Instead of making it some competitive thing I decided to just hang with my friend and get her the goal time she was shooting for. Those of you who know me know-that was a hard thing for me to do! I expected to go out and challenge my PR but it was okay, there is always another half around the corner.

Anyway, I knew what she could handle-we've been running together for about 2 months now. She said "I just want to go under 2 hours" her previous time was 2:12. I said "um, you can blow that time out of the water if you want to go for it" she asked what I thought and I said I thought she could break 1:50.

So we chatted-or rather-I chatted for most of the way, got quiet through those middle miles that are just rough and boring and then chatted away in the final few. I knew we had it easy when we passed the 1:50 pace person and then she disappeared from our sights behind us. In the last mile I just wanted to bust loose. I felt I'd held back a lot most of the race and watching the 1:45 pacer bounce along not so far in front of me was hard. My friend was really hurting that last mile and seemed to sense my vibe and said "you should just GO and put it all out there!" so I did. My last mile was under 8 minutes and I finished in 1:48.

Pretty happy with the run. I didn't wear music which is a first for me. There were a lot of bands along the way and tons of local support. I didn't feel that tired or even winded at all most of the way and just felt great overall. Its also neat to see my time wasn't THAT far off of my best of 1:44 which I really feel I could have done today if I had done my own thing.

It was way more fun with a friend though! :)

A job well done... congrats! You're a good friend too! I'm sure she appreciated you being there for her.

Foot feels great today but I am pretty sore. I didn't stretch much after it.

good to hear. i thought i was going to be uber sore today as my body usually takes 1.5 to 2 days to let me know i worked my muscles hard...nothing a light aerobic workout can't fix.

It was nice of you to run with your friend...when i ran my last 10k in philly i ran with the gf...i kept her going through it and she ran a 65 minute race. not bad for someone who before starting to train that had never run more than 1/2 mile at a time.

Awesome job on your run Sparrow!!!
I enjoy rading your journal, I just started back onto this forum last week.
Hope your foot feels okay...

Hey --

I'm relatively new to this website and forum, and I've been reading your info. Does it seem that maybe you're overtraining? A big picture look at recent info you post and it seems like you are getting injured often for someone who's in really good shape. I train for a competition that involves 8 events in one day. And I used to really hit the days of training. Similar to you especially when a seemingly mild injury went away. Now, the most recent 'injury' of an elbow lead to surgery from overtraining. Also with the shoulders when they let me know I've worked them, I take a break. I learned those were clues for me to cut back the amount of days, and increase the intensity.

Food for thought.

Doing some more reading about what you may have and that someone mentioned PF - a good friend of mine has that, continued running through the pain, etc., and now can't run at all. Walking hurts him. What helped him was NO running. He started back running after some swimming. His doctor recommended the sock that someone else mentioned. But the best results came from a lot of stretching his foot.

So anyways -- back to my intial response, it may be an overtraining issue.

Thanks for your imput tcajim, I do appreciate it.

The foot never hurt again after the race. I suspected all along it was probably some sort of strain from the one class I did that had some different kinds of exercises I wasn't used to. It came on suddenly the day after that class (that next morning) and went away in 2 days.

I actually just came off of a half ironman 2 months ago so my body is pretty used to the abuse. What I am doing now is undertraining compared to what I had been doing. The difference right now is that I'm adding some things I never had time for before when I was training for that race. I'm doing more pilates and plyometric exercises than before. Its not harder, just different.

Thanks for checking in on me

Did a 6 mile run last night (wasn't the best) and 3000 yds today in the pool. Just got back from a 4 day "vacation" so my muscles think they're still relaxing.

Looked up race results and I was 11th out of 230 women in my age group. I may revise my marathon plans and keep the half distance year round. I really like it.

Ditched the long run this morning. We were going to only do 9.

My run buddy and I decided it was time for a week of backing off a little so we did our own thing this morning.

My own thing consisted of sleeping in till 8, getting some coffee, doing some errands and then deciding I needed to go do a run afterall.

It is extremely windy here today so one direction of the run sucked. I just pretended I was doing hills, the wind was that resistant and I felt like I was marking time. It was nice to just be me. I've not done a solo run for a while. Ended up at 6.1 miles and 8:01 pace
