Weight-Loss September MPH Challenge

Hey everyone.

Back in July, Derrick ran a triathlon challenge, where we tried to accumulate enough (or more) miles of swimming, running and cycling to complete a triathlon by the end of the month. It was fun.

RunningGirl and I took part, and we both found it motivating to see the miles pile up. I know it helped me keep chugging along.

Anyway, RunningGirl and I have been talking, and she wanted to do something similar for September.

Since we want to be inclusive of more than just those 3 activities, and since RG is planning on starting with some resistance training, we came up with...

The MPH Challenge!

M- log your miles of any exercise or sport that can be measured by distance

P - log how many pounds you lift in your workouts (so if I do 10 reps of 100 pounds, that's 1000 pounds)

H - log your hours in any other kind of workout that cannot be measured by the two above methods (calisthenics, tennis, or dancing, for example)

The idea is to see how ridiculously high we can get these numbers by the end of September. Anyone can join at any time.

I'm planning on adding it all up and seeing how big a thing we could have lifted, how far we could have travelled, etc at the end. Should be fun.

It is not a competition, there are no prizes except the fun of taking part, the benefits of exercise, and the support and advice we can give each other.

I hope lots of people take part, and that this challenge thread is social as well. I've seen challenges where nothing but results get posted, and I've seen some that are extremely active and interactive. I'm hoping for the latter with this.

We start tallying our workouts September 1st. Let's do this!

Oh this is AWESOME, you put sooo much work into this Cord the Seeker!!! WoW, really omgosh. I'm Freakin PSYCHED!!!

Let's DO THIS!!

I'll join in with you guys. Sounds like fun and I'll need all the motivation I can get to stay on track for the next month lol.

Hey all, I'm new around these parts but would be into being part of this challenge. I try and ride the stationary bike and lift weights several times a week, but never thought of keeping track of my stats. Sounds like fun.

Can I just take my Camaro to the drag strip and tell you what the trap speed is in MPH? It should go about 132 mph now. :auto: :biggrinjester:

Jokes aside, I'm glad the triathlon challenge helped you two. I wish we had received more participation but it was fun with just the three of us. You two kicked my butt.

I'm having a rough go lately. Having some crappy things happening in my life but I'm still fighting. I'm not sure if I will do this one or not. The weight logging seems like a lot of work but the rest of it sounds great. What if I just log bench press? I do a lot of other exercises so it would take a lot of time to keep track of all those.

Derrick, I would love to have you aboard. After the triathlon challenge, it wouldn't seem right without you.

Just log whatever you want. I'll do the tallying, you just log your lifts. If you just want to do the bench press, that's fine.

I just know that most people know what they lift in terms of pounds/sets/reps. I'm not actually expecting everyone to do the calculating - I was planning on doing that.

Woo Hoo! Awesome turn out!! If it ever gets to be too much for tallying and what not, Cord the Seeker, just give me a holler! I have a lot of time on my hands. ;)

Lata :waving:

This sounds like a lot of fun! How will things be posted?? In another thread to track it? Or in teams? This will give me some motivation to head back to the gym now that my back is healing nicely!

Okay, everyone, we start tomorrow!

As for logging here or on separate threads, I was thinking we would just try doing it here on this thread to start. If it starts to get too messy, we can run separate threads - I'm already thinking that the "pounds" track might need its own thread, just because the calculations will get ponderous.

As an example, here is my weight routine from yesterday:
squats 170lbs 5x5 = 4250
bench press 125lbs 4x5, 1x4 = 2900
shoulder press 70lbs 3x5, 65lbs 2x5 = 1650
deadlift 120lbs 5x5 = 3000
wrist roll-ups 10lbs 1x5 = 50

total = 11,850 lbs

We shall see. Let's try logging it all here for now.

I am open to suggestions, if anyone has an idea for a more effective way to do this.

IN!!!! Thanks for doing this. I read this quick because i am at work. Do we need to set goals or are we just going for overall numbers?

I will start with the first actual entry, lame as it is (I just finished midnight shifts and they always throw me off stride):

35 minutes of pushups/squats/crunches.

Giving me totals of:

Miles: 0

Pounds: 0

Hours: 0:35

I think this may be a good way of tracking - we'll see how it goes.

Here is day 1 first round for the day.

Finaly got my bike out of the shop today after 2 weeks one good thing was they had to upgrade the shifters and I did not have to pay a dime for any of the work.

So if anyone is in need of a bike in central Missouri drop me a note and I will tell you where I go please note I will gain nothing by this I am just a happy customer.

Now on to the good stuff.

9/1/09 1.67 miles in 9 minutes and 43 seconds average speed of 10.3 top speed of 18.3 man I have lost some leg strength in 2 weeks:cry:

Done another ride tonight same route good thing because I forgot to put the computer on my bike so another 1.67 miles.

Miles: 3.34

Pounds: 0

Hours:0
