Runner's Club

I have shitty shoes, I have to run through the downtown core to get home and it has been +43 celsius for weeks now......

sirant: Please do me a favor, PLEASE!!! Get yourself good shoes!!! Bad shoes can eff-up your legs/feet/hips and such!!! You don't want to end up with an injury!!

i am kind of scarred to have any kind of injury from running. I am just at the begining of my "running carrier", I am afraid it would turn me away from running and I would never do that exercise ever again.

Hajni: I understand--and I feel you! But we shouldn't be fearful--we should be preventative. I learned my lesson--to listen to my body. If I sense my ankles are tired, then I'm going to STOP from now on!! Jeez. But I'd be lying if I said I just think everything with this fucking ankle will be 100% in 10 days--I'm scared of spraining it again!! But if I incorporate the deep water running, then I should be ok, I think.

Update: My ankle is not swollen. It is not bruised. It is sore when I walk. That is it! I still don't want to go to work. I'm still crushed. I'm a Big Baby because I never played sports and thus have never suffered a "sports injury" ;) BUT believe it or not, I was a KLUTZ as a little girl, and I constantly stubbed and bloodied my big toes, and twisted my ankles. They never "sprained" per se, but I was always twisting them and they always hurt. I think by 9 or 10 I started to get less klutzy.

good run/walk today. 5min warm up then 2 min run/3 minute walk for 30 minutes (lunch time run)/4k. finally feeling like I'm finding my stride and pace (locking my right foot in with the snare drum in songs keeps me constant).
feeling pretty awesome right now.

curvygirl that sucks about your foot.

Oh I know, same damn foot as the wasp sting!

How cute, you're running to the beat. I love that! Careful, though--it was music that distracted me and made me sprain! Then again you're safe on flat ground, right? Glad you're feeling awesome--because you are!!!!!!!!!

Hello,
I hope everybody is having a good day.
I went to run this morning and boy I was so tired. It was a long week and I think I should have taken a day off. Instead I tried my hardest , gritted my teeth and did the 3 miles although I have to say I walked about 2 of them.
The trainer in the gym told me I am not eating enough protein so I started drinking a protein shake (soy protein, 100 cal/scoop) with fat free milk. It is an extra 200-230 calories a day, we'll see if it makes a difference.

So I guess I am going to take tomorrow off instead and not work out.
Not trying to be a downer or anything, but our cat died yesterday. We are very sad right now and I still haven't told my 2 year old yet that the "kitty" will not be coming home.

Hope everybody will have a great weekend!!
Hajni

Curviegirlie, I hope the ankle is better soon. It sucks to get injured :(.

I'm up to a whole 18 min running :). Walked for 5 to start and finish and finished off my second mile with two and a half min walking. Two miles in 10:30. Time is worse than it was Tuesday and I ran one min longer than I did last time. Crazyness!

Siriant, After all that at a gym, I'm sure you'd still walk/jog/run/ or bike home... You are amazing. I'm pretty sure it was your post about working out in a park, I tried it after that, and got to say I was embarrassed for the first little bit, but after a few minutes warmed up to the idea. I didn't have anywhere else to workout on my vacation at the campsite :). Now I do the same when taking my daughter to the park even though people around here might *eek* know who I am!

Hajni & Michelle: Hi gals! Glad to see you're sticking with it!! :D You two, be sure and take it easy, like you are, when you're tired.

I run tired all the time, but I sprained my ankle when my ankles were tired. Weird, huh? Makes too much sense!! LOL!!

Anyway, I envy you, I'm having fun listening to your runs. No running for me, not for a while. Not trying to get sympathy, honestly, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't bummed out and wishing I was racing through the forest!

Hajni, I'm so sorry about your cat. :( I have a cat, myself--he is 3 and hs name is Oliver. He's one of the most intelligent, wonderful, loving cats int he world and I don't know what I'd do if something happened to him. I don't have children, but I can imagine it's even harder with a child to explain the situation to. Glad you're eating protein! You're right to do it, I know that everybody thinks you need carbs when you're a runner, but I always make sure to eat plenty of fish and beans, because I also weight train heavily and I run uphill a lot, which makes my thighs all sore--so I know I'm building muscle, and muscle needs protein! (I don't eat meat and I'm not big on dairy)

Anyway, good night!! :)

HI my fellow runners!!

I was pressed for time today and I had to go grocery shopping. Well, the store is right by my exercise place so I thought to stop in.
I ran 3 miles in 38 min. My personal best!! Also used the weight machines for about 15 min.
Had to take Sat. off. I was just exhausted and I am glad I did have a rest day. Running (although it was a treadmill) was great and I felt so good afterwards.
Here is to a great week!!
I am working up the courage to run a 5K in September, there is one close to my house. We'll see.
Hajni
Everybody have a great week!!

Wow, glad to see such a great turnout to the club! Way to go fellow runners.
I've been slacking on my forums lately, summer's always a busy time of year for me. I have been out running 5 times a week though, it's been reeally humid and sticky here lately so I've had to stick with treadmill running at the gym, which is good I suppose cause I can track my distance, maintain an even pace, and keep track of my calories lost. I really prefer jogging around outside though.

CurvyGirlie, wow really sorry to hear about the ankle! Glad it's not broken or sprained. I've had many sports injuries throughout the years and glad you've discovered water therapy, it definitely is the best way to go. Keep it up and you'll be back out there in no time!

Congrats on the guts for the 5 & 10k's everyone. I hope to do a 5k or two this fall once the weather gets a little cooler.

Today will be a 'rest' day for me as I have a nice sinus infection and fever, definitely not a good day for running. I'm thinking soup and an early bedtime will do a body good.

Well, keep it up everyone and once again, glad to see so many fellow running enthusiasts. I've always found it's the best way to lose fat and tone up.

Welcome back! I was wondering if you were coming back! :)

Thank you, my ankle is 92% better! I didn't need water therapy, it was so minor I discovered.
I actually did the Wharf to Wharf with my 77 year old gramps--here's what happened:
The race:
15,000 people
Stayed behind or beside gramps the entire time---he's a trooper!! It was so damn crowded it took us 19:35 to do mile 1. Wharf to Wharf is a 6 mile "race" through south Santa Cruz and Capitola, while all the neighbors watch with their mimosas, cheer us on, blow bubbles on us, spray us with hoses, and play music for us. I'd say there were about 20 bands, from Chinese drums to rock to jazz to dance music. It was SO MUCH FUN to job with gramps he LOVED it, he was so happy. The thing was like a giant parade, so much energy, and good vibes. If you have a MAJORLY HUGE race in your area, I highly recommend it. People of all shapes and sizes!

I shall do the Bay to Breakers next year--it is CRAZY I heard--San Francisco is full of colorful people, ya know ;)

Will go running again probably Wednesday, on flat land! :D

I'm super jealous that you got to run such a fun race! Races around here are pretty much serious business, even the larger ones. I'd like to be in a race with lots of people cheering and bands playing! Glad you still got to run and that you did it safely, too.

Thank you! It WAS part serious--people from Kenya flew in to show us white people up, lol! (well, I'm half white ;) ) The winner was actually a Morracan and did it in 27:53  (male). The female winner was Kenyan and did it in 31:41.

I too get extremly self consious when running. That's why I like running either early morning, or night time, when there is hardly one outside.

I hope to get over this soon...heh

I am the EXACT opposite.

I get motivated when EVERYONE is watching. I run during mid-day or early evening and I run down the medium of a main intersection (that has a running trail) so EVERYONE driving can see me.

It pushes me to run and not walk so everyone can see me chugging away

As you can see by my weight, I am no lightie either but its working.

1 month of running 4 times a week = 22 pounds gone

I just started running yesternight, though only on a treadmill. It is very embarassing that I could barely run half a mile. I had to stop at .6 miles because of heavy pain on my shin. Any suggestions ?

Just do what you can, stop when it doesn't feel right--walk if you have to. I've been there--having to stop at half a mile. The important thing is to continue on. I don't know your weight, but if you're very heavy you may want to walk or power walk until you're a bit lighter, if you feel pain. Running shouldn't be about PAIN, but I'll tell ya--when you push yourself to the next level, it sure does suck! :rotflmao:

Also be sure to stretch afterwards and try not to learn if its actual pain or if its your mind playing tricks on you-I always had shin splints when I was in the army I really dont know why:confused:
We all have to start somewhere:)

Want to know how long I made it on my first run?

4 blocks....then I almost passed out

Now I can run 1.5 miles and getting better every week.

You WILL get better.

go slow. focus on time, not distance. I started a couple weeks ago and am only doing 5-6 reps of 3 minutes walking/ 2 minutes running every second day.
the idea is to build up slowly, and give your body time in between to heal and recover.
read up on how running works and various running programs for beginners. I recommend Running for Mortals. I've about 3/4 of the way through it now and finding it very informative.
also, check out these sites:

I know we all want to be able to run 5 or 10 miles in one go but if you're just starting, start small.
btw, .6 miles is pretty awesome for the first time. that's 1 kilometer.

I've been needing to run because I'd drop my weight a lot faster. The only problem is I hate running. It's not like I'm inexperienced at running or anything (ask the cops in my childhood), but my legs always hurt afterwards. :(

but my legs always hurt afterwards

Do you have good running shoes? That is one of the most important thing to get. Do you strech before and after? I am not an expert by all means, just a thought.

Mani : Please don't be embarrased, at some point of time we were all beginners (I still am). If last September somebody told me to run 100 feet for my life, I would have just said: shot me now and get it over with. :) Now I can run 3 miles although I am a very SLOW runner. You got great advices from everybody!! Keep on running, little by little every day!!

I skipped my run today, but going tomorrow. Did my Pilates tape instead. Well, discovered a new challenge. I died doing my pilates tape. There were moves on there I could just watch, there was no way of me even attempting!!

Everyone have a great day, evening, morning...anything!!
Hajni
