Pro-Obesity Movement

If anyone ever told me I needed to lose weight, I would think they were crazy. This is why I do not want to go into fashion modeling. I think fitness modeling is a much better idea. Not to mention, I'm not tall enough to be a fashion model anyway.

It's crazy how complacent (spelling) Americans have become. Most people would rather sit on their asses in front of the computer playing Free Cell than go outside and play with their kids. Hell, now it's ingrained in our minds to be lazy. Parents who don't want to raise their kids properly say "go watch TV" or "go play your video games" while they stuff them full of McDonalds and flash frozen grease.

As far as the adults themselves...well besides most of them being horrible role models for their kids with their lack of motivation...all want that "kooshy" desk job making $15/hour 8 hours a day, their only exercise being rolling to the side to get their wallet out to pay the chinese delivery guy who biked his ass over to the office for his 1.50 tip. After that exhausting day at work, they go home and sit on their ass at home playing WOW.

I have no idea why Americans are fine being fat though.

*Rant's done now*

This might sound harsh (apologies in advance). I've said this before. I think we have become a blameless society. No one wants to take resposibility for their actions or their choices. It's always someone else's fault...my parents were abusive, never around, didn't teach me any better. My life is too hectic, soccer practice, work, kids, homework. My job is too stressful, I work long hours. I mean if I become overweight, it's becasue I've chosen to eat poorly not because my dad worked long hours and I hardly saw him. When does the blame fall on our choices?

Not to mention we're a society where eveything has to be HUGE, our homes (do we really need 6 bedrooms?), our cars (is that SUV that seats 12 big enough?), our meals (do we really need to supersize anything or order half a cow on our plates?)...

Just my two cents...

I honestly have not seen any pro-obesity movements. I have seen people say be happy with the weight you are, but thats because there are so many over weight people suffering from depression mental problems and are on the verge of suicide or becoming anorexic. Mostly what i've seen and read is people trying to get thin, not get fat.

I haven't seen any of these forums or website that tell women to be fat either.

Moonbeam, I have to agree with you for the most part. I think all in all, if we eat poorly and wonder why we are fat or blame it on someone/something else, we need to really think about that. However, I also see people who work their asses off to workout hard and eat right and they don't see results, which frustrates them, making them binge, etc. I know, I've been there. Yes, I realize that is a small group of people, but that group is still there.

But yeah, overall, I agree with you. It's like the office worker being passed up for a promotion, only to blame it on the person who got it, saying, "well, s/he really kissed ass to get that...." when in all actuality, person A probably didn't work hard enough.

It's not like they're telling women to be fat if the aren't already fat. They're telling them it's okay to stay fat and not do anything about it. They claim fat is beautiful and skinny is anorexic.

So basically I didn't like PE. We really didn't learn much besides how to play a bunch of sports. there was also the whole teamwork thing since most of the sports were team sports. I didn't really see the value in it until I discovered weight training. I think there needs to be more focus on EXERCISE in PE classes rather than on sports. PE should teach kids how to stay fit on their own, not just provide them with an hour to play basketball and get psychologically traumatized when no one wants to pick them for the team. :(

That's one of the purposes of PE-expose students to a plethora of sports. So, you build sports units to expose kids to the fundamentals of a bunch of sports. I don't typically pick captains to pick the kids; I just number them off. I tend to let the kids play the activities they enjoy most. Most of the guys love basketball, weightlifting, or football; the girls love scatterball and jumping rope and some like lifting weights. An hour of something like basketball keeps the kids heart rates elevated and is pretty good exercise. Now, I have the kids do ~ a 20 minute warm up that includes dynamic stretching, push ups, chins, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, lunges, and some form of running, whether it be the mile run, bleachers, suicides, etc.

However, I think what seperates me from a lot of PE teachers is that I actually teach certain aspects of nutrition and exercise physiology. The kids also all leave at the end of the year knowing their BMR and how to count calories. They use fitday.com to complete their food journals.

you better tell them to keep this secret from their parents, or else you will have a friggin upraising on your hands. The parents will go nuts! "You're making our children into fitness freaks!"

who are these "Pro-Obesity" people? where is this movement you speak of?

a) huge difference between being overweight and being obese.
b) ive never in my life heard anyone promote obesity.

I used the term "curvy" to identify the euphemism that obese women use to describe themselves. They turn obesity into a positive thing with that term. Yes curves, without quotation marks, are existent in all woman. My butt is curvy. My breasts are curvy. But I'm still a size 2. Get this, you don't have to be a size 20 to have curves. But to have "curves" you do. Get what I'm saying?

you also dont have to be a size 2 to be healthy.

i did read the thread, and i disagree with what shes saying.
or at least how im interpreting what shes saying.

you are making the argument that its not ok to be overweight, and society is doing nothing but supporting the idea that "big is beautiful". i say it is as long as your ok with it. there ARE people out there, believe it or not, who like overweight people. being a size 2 is not what everyone wants. there are variations of "healthy". anyways. whatever.

i think the question is more what is healthy. I think it's disturbing that more and more people become overweight. I don't care if a million people like overweight people, it's not healthy. And I don't want my kids to grow up in a society where people almost get encouraged to get fat.

The hospital in my city has done some sort of study and is now starting the process of changing the hospital to suit obesity. For the last decade they had the suit the needs of patients who smoked. Smoking has decreased but the new problems that are arising is that of obesity. It's becoming a problem.

Personally, I don't care if your too skinny or obese. We need the education to get people healthy. The governments need to get envolved as well.

I also have to say, I don't think anybody can love themselves unless they take care of their body, mind and soul. No ad or comment can make a person feel great about themselves unless the person can feel it for themself.

Healthy for me isn't just the body. Someone mentioned depression. Many people have it. It can put a person in a place where they physically can't do anything, they don't have the desire or the ability (in some cases). It has to be treated. Once treated they can start becoming healthier on the physical part. Like I said, all three have to be healthy for happiness. (My opinions only..don't attack me too hard :) )

dont get me wrong, im not trying to promote being overweight, but being overweight does not mean you're obese, and many people who are overweight are that way not because they eat horribly or dont exercise but because despite doing those things (eating right and exercising) they are genetically larger than most. it is not unhealthy for someone to have a little fat. you have to focus on the obesity problem, which is a far different thing. people need to be better educated, and from an early age. much more needs to be put into schools and things like that. also, i have never seen anything "promoting" obesity.

life is about being happy. the reason we are on this planet is to be happy and to make others happy. it's equally as unhealthy, mentally speaking, to be completely absorbed with your physical appearance. if two people can be happy together and they both happen to be a little overweight, there is nothing wrong with that. if you're comfortable with the way you look then who cares, as long as your trying to take care of yourself and can manage your life, and feel comfortable with YOURSELF, then that is all that matters.
