Petals diary

Oh, so very sorry to hear about your friend. Big hugs, and so glad you are comforting yourself in a healthy way, and hope you get to pamper yourself a bunch, too. I would send you a big tureen of comforting soup if I could. :grouphug:

Good morning everyone . Thank you for all the hugs and support .
I went out last night with some girlfriends it was arranged a long time ago . I had no alcohol and had a healthier option from the menu . Tbh not my favourite food but it was for the company . I’m not a lover of Chinese unless I make it myself really . But I had a great chat and a laugh so the food was only secondary . I have a few social events on the cards now for a while so it good to go .

Did some housework this morning and im a bit peckish now but will wait and have some lunch I think .

Time to get the slow cooker back out now for the winter and make some nice soups . That’s my task this weekend , give it a good clean and choose some recipes .

Love to come home to nice warming smells

Mmmm, the smell of soup filling up the house - that has to be one of my favorite things! I love the term "warming smells" and hadn't heard that before either. We should open the Belly-hug Cafe with warming soup specialties!

Well as you know I'm Irish and fond of the duo . I buy some of their products . My sister makes their vegetable curry it's divine . They have become really successful .

I looked at their website more, and they are also sprout farmers - something I really want to dabble in. I have a flat of wheat grass going in the garden right now. Adorable, happy sprout farmers with delicious recipes! Wow!!

Lol they are great farmers and so inspiring . They have a restaurant also I believe .

I was out today. I tried on shoes and boots . I don’t know how I will ever buy boots or shoes again . Shame they need to be broken in . I didn’t buy any . Just want to wear trainers for ever lol .

Came home and was hungry and thirsty so just made a skim milk smoothie with frozen mango and pineapple and coconut with a nice scoop of organic peanut butter thrown in .

My husband and I were chatting and apparently farmers are in trouble as milk has got cheap. We have decided not to buy supermarket branded milk anymore and to ensure all our veg and fruit is from the veg and fruit store not the supermarket.

Tired tonight and happy got my exercise done .

You mean you can get farm fresh milk where you live? I don´t think that´s allowed around here. If you mean you´ll buy A-brand milk instead of off-brand (which you probably do, I wasn´t reading right): the price difference doesn´t normally go to farmers unless the brand´s from a farmers´ collective. It´s insane how little of the money you pay in stores goes to the actual producer of the goods. My dad´s ecstatic if he gets 20 cents for a kilo of potatoes - in a bad year it´s less than 5.

Yes sorry LaMa I mean we won't buy the supermarket brand that's so much cheaper but
You are right it perhaps makes no difference to the farmers does it . We do buy local yogurt and cheese where we can . The veg we can definitely source locally. It's so hard though for when money is tight to not buy the special offers the supermarkets offer.

I do remember when we would have our own milk fresh from neighbors cows . Never liked it . Too rich and creamy . I am a complete skim milk fan now .

I grew up in a county where there were little subsistence farms, but the federal taxes changed to no longer support small farms, but instead to give tax breaks to the large farmers (because they had a large lobby). So the county became very poor with no industry to replace the small farms. I think it's so sad how people who work that hard have so much trouble putting food on the table. My grandfather had a subsistence farm, and finally retired by becoming a machinist instead. He made a lot more and the work wasn't back breaking like farming. If there ever was a profession that needed subsidies, it's farming!

The Irish farmers have been extremely well subsidised over the years by the EU but I think a lot now hold extra jobs like teaching or contract hire .
The cost of land is huge . Farming is really a true vocation.

If I understand things correctly, most of US farm subsidies go to wheat and corn - stuff we really shouldn´t be consuming in the quantities we do consume them (high-fructose corn syrup anyone?). If that money went to fruit and veggies instead the country would probably be better off. I´m not sure if the EU is better at that kind of thing but (seasonal, regional) fruit&veg are cheap around here (and since distances aren´t comparable to those in the US we don´t have food deserts either).

I don’t really know too much about the farming subsidies here so I won’t say too much but I know they have been generous . 1 in 12 persons work in agriculture or related industries here in Ireland and that becomes one in 7 in rural localities . It’s pretty high . Uk is leaving the EU nezt year and it will very likely have a negative impact on our industry as we export a huge amount of agri products to the Uk . It’s worrying times .

Anyway moving away from politics all ok here . Had an easy day yesterday. I did my 30 mins of exercise but very gentle as was sore and tired .

Reading about all the keto diets and fast days I really realise I eat too much sugar and too many carbs . I am going to try and mix it up a bit more .

I find that once I eat minimal sugar for a while, it tastes too sweet when I have some again. It's like a drug that you get used to and don't even realize how much you are eating anymore until you don't have it and see how darn strong it really is, so I am going to try to cut it out except for berries and summer veggies for the next few months and see how it goes.

I had researched that simple carbs turn into sugar very quickly in your body, but I hadn't realized that all carbs eventually turn into sugar. So the keto thing is about basically getting off of almost all sugar and burning fat instead. It seems pretty drastic, but I think it will be a wake up call to me that probably the reason I don't lose weight and am so good at gaining it is that I am still basically addicted to sugar mostly in the form of having too much of the complex carbs. Actually after making more snacks with nuts and cutting down on the carbs slowly, I am noticing how brown rice and the complex carbs taste pretty sweet to my taste buds. Nutrition is so surprising!
