There's a difference between studying Islam and being a Muslim. Obama has denied being a Muslim because he's a Christian, but that doesn't mean he or any other Christian for that matter can't learn about another religion. I remember studying Islam in my 7th grade history class. It was right after 9/11 and a lot of the kids were indoctrinated with prejudices. I imagine it was a school wide effort to inform us about the history of the religion and the culture so at least we knew what people were talking about when they said "Muslim".

The point I'm trying to make is that one can study a religion without being a follower of it. In fact, I'm doing that right now. We have to read sections of the Bible for one of my classes, but I'm not going to all of a sudden become a born again Christian because of it. The religion one chooses to follow is a very personal decision. It sounds like, to me, that Obama is and has always been a Christian. He denies being a Muslim, not studying Islam.
 
I agree with you Spicy, there is a difference. But Obama has made a reference (not in the link I provided) to participating in a class/worship that is reserved for only devout Muslims. I will grab the book when I get home, find the citation, and let you know where that information is...

and... I'll say it again, I don't care if he is Muslim, was Muslim, or has always been a Christian - He has a very inconsistent and vague history, and THAT's what I'm not comfortable with.

I'd actually like to see that, as I've heard this before. Skian, do you have anything that down right displays that he lied about BEING a muslim rather than just studying it. I have heard this before, and now I'm intrigued.

However, I feel the same way about this as I did when all the crap was going around about Bush dodging the military/war, or Clinton smoking marijuana. As I've read these articles, trying to put my bias aside, one point was made perfectly clear. He studied the Koran and Islam as a CHILD, and as such, was mandatory to attend mosques and prayer services..who is he at such an age to protest? And I'll repeat myself, as a child! Who cares what he did in his youngest years? Who cares if Clinton smoked pot back in the 70s? Who cares that Bush had failed businesses before he was even governer? It all has nothing to do with present and what is going on right now, and what a man's beliefs and ideas are right now that will help bring the country out in the biggest hole it has dug itself in.

Agreed and agreed - I don't care if he studied it or if he WAS a Muslim, just be honest about it. All he has to say is what you said - "I was a child, it was required at school" or "I was a Muslim for X years when I was growing up" - end of story.

The image of the birth certificate that the article refers to is whats in question. Many sources say that the image has been modified, and there has yet to be a hard version provided to the courts. Why can't the actual birth certificate be released?

And the faith thing - I will provide you with the citation, which if my memory serves me, is cited directly from one of Obama's books.

Edit: and the "lazy link" only provides the context of a few discussions he's had, it doesn't not refer to my point in any way.

I still firmly believe that McCain would have a substantial lead in this election if he tried to get McDonald's to come out with a McCain Burger. Brat patties, bacon, and the works on a sesame seed bun. Maybe even throw in a game like Monopoly to go along with the combo meals. Collect all five and receive tax benefits or a dinner at the White House.
 
Ugh, I've never understood those darn third party candidates. They don't stand a chance of winning. In my opinion, you may as well just not vote if you're going to vote for one of them. If you see both of the main candidates as evil, pick the lesser of the two evils. By voting for a third party candidate or not voting at all, you're essentially making it easier for the more evil one to win.

There will never be a perfect candidate. I disagree with the guy I'm going to vote for on a few issues, but it doesn't mean I don't think he'd make a better president than the alternative.
