No More Free beer, just a journal

You can have all of my beer, Chris.

It's in the fridge downstairs ... I've got a few different brands. People tend to leave their beer in my fridge when they come over because they know I never buy it, and if they happen to drop buy and want a beer, they know they'll be able to find their brand LOL

Yeah ... that's crazy, isn't it?

They sound like sensible friends!

45mins of intervals on the bike last night. Not HIIT, just the pre-programmed intervals ranging from difficulty 6-10 of between 1 and 2 mins. I simply couldn't face HIIT, maybe I will tonight if I don't do weights.

Didn't do weights or HIIT, went for a 4 mile run instead as the sun was shining and, lets face it, it probably won't shine again until next year!!

I've been going through the gruelling process of recalculating my diet today. As I think I mentioned, leading up to my holiday I was running at a large deficit. Obviously, maintaining that for any length of time would end up being counter-productive so, as of next week, I'll be gradually raising my calories back up to around 1900 - 2000 with macros at around 45/35/20. The macros are approximate at this stage and will depend on Sundays weigh-in.

I really didn't feel like training today. I spent about ten minutes before I finished work trying to justify a day off from the gym....I lost the argument (or won it, depending on your perspective), sucked it up and hit the weights :D

Chest & tris, about 20 mins cardio afterwards. Got a 2nd wind about half way through and pushed pretty hard.

Considering a complete reworking of my workout. I fancy a few new excercises to keep things nice and fresh.

Yesterday I ran another 4 miles.

First thing this morning was time to weigh in. I've lost 1lb in weight and, rather surprisingly I have both dropped bodyfat (by almost 1%) and also increased lean body mass, albeit only by small amount! If it ain't broke, why fix it - I'll carry on as I am and weigh in again next week. As tomorrow is my birthday, all nutrition rules are out the window so, the next weigh in will be Mon//Tues of next week.

Got up early today and hit the weights (legs & shoulders). Dumbell presses were surprisingly hard today for some reason. 20 mins cross-trainer afterwards. Then went for a 30min run this afternoon.

Well another birthday has been and gone (number 36, how on earth did that happen?!!) and I have to admit, I probably had a beer or two too many by way of celebration! Beer is now off limits for a while (as is any form of alcohol).

Yesterday, despite still suffering the effects of excess, I managed a back & biceps workout followed by 25mins cardio. It wasn's the best workout I've ever had but, it was better than no workout at all!!

3.5 mile run wth incline intervals (not HIIT) last night.

Not been feeling brilliant this week but, still somehow managing to stick with the programme.

Couldn't train at all last night as I had to work late and I'm going away for the weekend so will have to wait for Monday.

hey Belated Happy Birthday:)..i am turning 28 this dec..and thinking the same thing..
how on earth that happend it like just yesterday it was my 16th bday:(

Thanks Sadie an d, don't worry about turning 28 - anything under 30 is still young :)

Ok, so calories are back up now to 1900 - 2000. Can't be more specific than that because my portions fluctuate slightly (size of chicken breast for example). This is still a deficit but, far less extreme than before. Carbs are up too and fats dropped slightly. Will monitor for a fortnight and see what how favourably my body reacts.

Back & biceps today - got to use my b'day presents, some olympic adaptor sleeves for my pulley machine and a couple of new cable attachments.

I'm still reeling from your "no more beer for awhile comment." After all, beer is proof positive God loves us. Not to worry, my friend. I'll drink your fair share on Friday.

I have to be honest with you Evo, the whole 'no alcohol for while' seems entirely unrealistic!! I think a small tipple each weekend is not only a good idea but, in fact is nothing short of my duty!! I owe it to the world to enjoy the beer it provides me with (but, only once a week!) :D

I ran for about 40mins yesterday and then found my left foot covered in blood!! (note to self: make sure all toenails are nicely trimmed before running ;) )

I did not feel strong yesterday!! Literally 'struggled' through my chest & tris workout. My muscles felt exhausted by the end which I suppose is the idea but, did not feel at my best! Cardio was fine of course.

I plan on tidying up my gym today, which will be the first time ever!!

Worked out early Sunday morning and, having finished my leg & shoulder workout, I was just about to hit the treadmill when I had a power cut. Got me wondering what would have happened if I had been on the treadmill? Would it have just stopped dead, leaving me to run into the console or, would it have slowed down gradually?! I think I should check the instructions, just in case!!

Took the day off from training yesterday.

Keep forgetting to update this.

Ok, 2 days ago I was going to run a few miles after a back & biceps workout but, I got shinsplints again for the first time in months!! Had to make do with the cross trainer! Ran 4 miles yesterday with no problems....weird.

Chest & triceps tonight.

ETA - I never seem to mention much about how my nutrition is going here! Have managed to be extremely strict lately and I think upping my calories has had a positive effect. The increase in carbs also seems to have had no negative effects. Will no more when I have the numbers to compare with the last couple of weeks. If the mirror is anything to go by though, results should be positive.

I've had this happen to me. It is abrupt, not gradual. I wound up quitting that gym because they had too many treadmills plugged into too few circuit breakers and refused to do anything about it.

Talk about thread resurrection!!!

Will be updating this with current workout next week (still on the 3 day split after all these years!)

Doing lots more running and cardio nowadays, quit smoking and haven't had a beer so far this year!!

Bodyfat% is currently around the 9 - 10% mark which is the lowest its been for many, many years!! Still not entirely happy though so, will continue to cut a while longer.

I'm sporting chronic achilles tendinopathy at the moment so, am not running as much as I would like. I have a 10k race on Sunday and a half marathon in a month so will be spending a lot of time with the physio for a while!!

Anyway, good to be back and posting my journal again :)

Saturday was a back & bicep session but, without deadlifts! I didn't want to put any unecessary strain on my achilles before Sunday's race.

The race went well although I struggled to pace myself which is something I need to work on before the half marathon where it will be much much more important! Finish time of 51:50 which, for a first race and considering I was sporting an injury, I was pretty happy with :)

I think I may have caught the bug yesterday and can't wait to race again.

I'll either take today as a complete rest day or will do a chest session. No cardio though, legs are a little sore.

Race Bug

Hey ChrisJG,

First, it's great to read about your progress - keep up the good work.

Second, yes you probably have got the race bug now! I raced yesterday in horrble conditions. 2hrs52mins running 20 miles of rivers. bogs, and big hills. It was meant to be a cross country plod but was more of a tough guy event. Best and hardest thing ever! Managed 14th from 450 runners.Aches and pains 2day. Once you get that sense of achievement you want more but I'm not the biggest supporter of endurance living/training as I find it stresses the body an awful lot!
Once the London Marathon is done, I look forward to going back to some sprint training and so do my knees!!

Hi Luke - well done! 20miles is a hell of a long way!!

Unfortunately, having spoken tot he physio, it seems unlikely that I'll be able to run the half marathon in 2 weeks time! He doesn't think I should be running for at least 6 weeks and full recover is likely to take 3 to 4 months!!

To say that I'm gutted would be a massive understatement! I've been training my arse off for months and must have clocked up at least 300 miles in training runs!

I've got new orthotics ordered which don't arrive for 3 weeks although, I'm tempted to try a gentle 5 miler this weekend to see if its sore at all. Realistically though, if I can't put the miles in beforehand, I simply wouldn't feel prepared on the day. Not 100% decided yet.

Still doing weights in the meantime but, cannot do squats, calf raises or deadlifts as they would all put too much strain on the achilles. Also doing as much cross training as I can as I don't want to let my fitness levels drop but, I just don't get as much pleasure out of it as running :(
