My Diary

Thanks for the support...

There was a mix of reasons for stopping - continuing would've meant another 4 or 5 hours at least on the trail, making the end time around 6:30 or 7:00 (getting close to sunset). Plus I was feeling really stiff, especially in the hips - walking was a struggle. Also too, I had trouble keeping my footing in spots which I counted as fatigue. Last but certainly not least was the condition of my feet, for which I have to see the doc tomorrow as they took some hits (blister or two, and other problems). I know I made the right decision, but I really didn't like it. A part of me wonders how, after two years of working out I wasn't able to complete a course that 3/4 of the entrants were able to complete. Irregardless of all the logical evidence to the contrary, the bruised ego will always believe I should've tried to finish. I hope the bruise gets cured by the end of the week.

Well, Tom, it sounds like you did the right thing in stopping. I know your ego/pride took a hit, but in the end, it was the better choice. Physical issues cannot be ignored.

This is something completely different you were going for which requires different training all together. Yes the two years of working out did help, but it wasn't enough. How much training did you do for this? Was it just the weekend? You would need more than that for the hiking, but I really don't know much about hiking. My uncle is the expert in the family. I just ask him the questions..:D

Saw the doctor for my feet today, and got an antibiotic that I need to take. Weight is up too, as I was 13lbs heavier than when I saw him a month ago. I'm guessing a lot of that is water weight from the infection and what I'd eaten this weekend, but still, it's a good wakeup call to return to vigilance. Not sure if I'll go to spinning tonight as I don't want to disturb the toes too much and cause further damage.

You make a very good point - I'd thought something along the same lines myself when I was apt to think in more rational terms. As for specific training, I'd done the treadmill for about a month prior to the hike, and got to the local state park a couple of times too. Next time I'll stick to the outdoors.

Stay off the flat pavement and stick to the trails for a start. Also when you start training for the hikes again, always, always have your backpack with you so you can get an idea of what it would be like on the real thing.

Hey Stingo...I loved the pics of your hike. 9 Miles!!! Good Lord. We love to hike too, but I haven't done any 9 miles hikes yet....kind of working my way up toward those. I'm not sure how vigorous the trail was, but 9 miles is quite an accomplishment, esp if that was your first hike ever w/o training for it.

Thanks Brandi - Well I did some training for it, but not the right kind apparently. I had thought the treadmill would be good enough to use, and boy was I ever wrong lol. I also know now that I carried way too much food. Now that I know better, both can be corrected.

The trail was a challenge - in one of the pictures the start point of the hike is visible as a speck when viewed from the top lol. I did the northern section of the hike which was going up to Hyner View (where the pics were taken), then getting back down and walking along the Susquehanna river, then walking back to near the start area, which is where the southern part of the course was. (Which some people thought was worse because although the climb wasn't as steep it seemed to go on forever).

The official site of the hike is . You can find the topographical maps (as well as pictures with lines indicating where the trails are) as well as other pictures of previous hikes.

Water, water everywhere...

Due to my recent foot problems, I've had to take more of the diuretic I usually take, which leads me to think that drinking caffeinated diet soda (itself a diuretic) all day is not a good idea. So I've begun shifting to water - filling up the water bottle I use for spinning and having it with me at my desk. Am curious to see what will be the outcome.

Just as I read this,I was finishing my water :D I bring one bottle in everyday, and keep re filling it on the company's tab lol!

Workout 4/27

Spinning

Intervals the first 20 minutes, then a climb for the next 20 and an open road finish (5 minutes). Two hour class on Saturday - should be interesting with the feet the way they are.
