Martin Katahn's Rotation Diet?

Hi all,

I was 163 lbs this morning, up a little from 162.8 lbs. I probably shouldn't weigh myself everyday but I'm just so anxious. I won't worry about 0.2 lbs...lol. I'll just continue plugging along. This is my last day of 600 calories and tomorrow I start the 900. 38 more lbs to go!! Have a blessed day everyone!

I don't understand this 'diet' at all. Why put yourself through so much ? Just eat a balanced diet, learn to work out your macros and exercise. The secret to weight loss.

Hi all,

Well I went to 900 calories for the rest of last week and I'm at 163.2. It makes me hesitant to go to 1200 cal for this week but I'll give it a try for a couple days or so. If I start going back up in weight, I may cut back. Anyone else have this happen to them?

I have limited mobility in one leg and can't do much in the way of excercise. I do try to eat right but I need to limit my amounts periodically because just a steady 1200 calorie diet doesn't seem to work for me. Everyone is different I guess, but you are right...Diet and excercise is the best way for those who can.

Hi folks - just started "back" on Rotation Diet today ( day 1, week 1 ) - was just Starving hungry tonite - "googled" Katahn's rotation diet & found a link to your board . thankyou folks, reading thru the posts , got inspired, went and made a quick veggie-stir fry, hunger now controlled, and am off to cut grass ( get in my exercise for today).

..thankyou all,

Maryann C.

Hi, all, i am just starting on the Rotation diet again today. It worked for me in the past, so I am doing it again. I am glad to see there are still other folks using an "antique" diet, and I am happy to say I still have my copy of the book. I thought I might try to skip most of the wheat products and concentrate more on fruits and vegetables since current wisdom seems to be hating on wheat, specifically gluten. So far, figs, tomatoes, a few olives and a whole lot of a bok choy oriental salad. I just hope I didn't overdo it with sodium.

Good luck to you all, and to me too! I hope we are all thinner on the other side of the journey!

Hi Starsnfire - fellow Rotation diet person. , seems there are a few folks who had success in past with this one,

Good luck to you too.

~ I'll be posting over on the Diary board , will watch for your posts too.

Maryann C. :)

Hi, Maryann!

It seems we are starting in a similar place-- I'm 5' 4", starting weight 243 lbs, and am 53. Hopefully we'll both have a lot of success with this! I have lost about 15 lbs in a month before on this diet, so I am hoping it works again. Let me know if you find any good ideas for dealing with the diet as you go, and I will post if I brainstorm up any answers to the challenges. Hope you enjoy your coming "calorie rich 1200" week!

Have a good week--you can do it!- Starsnfire

Hi Starsnfire

- I am having a bit of a frustrating week - scale has not budged yet ( still stuck with the 2lbs."water weight" ? post-weekend)....did 981 & 1056 for calories last 2 days, but today- have fallen-off course on food with my scale frustration ....

- had a good chat with a co-worker today- she's saying - just stick to it - there will be "bumps" in road....

- I cruised thru some of the diarie's - found scbibhouse - sounds like she is close to our age ( 52y.o.) & has managed to lose >87lbs. over last 14months...the one thing I noticed in most of her posts is really consistent exercising....

- so , will put my nose back to the grindstone, walk the dog tonite, & make sure to do my treadmill tonite ( for sure !)

- and bak on the rotation menu tomorrow.

...good luck to you Starsnfire-(hope your week is going better than mine. ) :banghead:

Hi, Maryann-

I am sorry that you were stuck for a few days, but hopefully the scale will be your friend again soon. I have only been on the diet since Monday, so i'm still in the first weight drop. I hate the fact that my whiny inner child is alternatively chafing at the food restrictions while demanding a faster weight loss. I guess that's why I'm overweight! I am always looking for motivation, so i found a picture (taken when I wasn't expecting it) that I can put in my pocket. That should hold me for awhile! Keep drinking that water--it will help move the water weight-- and hang on. I was happy to see you are sticking with it! Good luck on the next weigh-in! I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Hi Starsnfire -

glad to hear you found a good-motivator with your photo , (my motivator is a annual MD appointment in Oct. -yikes. ) , and thankyou for the water reminder ( I always forget that one...)

... and very interesting comparison about whining about hunger, but yearning for weight loss - ...so true. :toetap05:

I am holding-steady this week at 252 lbs. -(loss of 4 lbs.) I did not try the low-cal days anyfurther yet this week (just wasn't ready) , am giving my body a few days of normal calories(see below) ,& plan to do a few rotation days next week & see what happens.- did some of walking/mowed lawn/weeded garden this week - so have the "activity"/exercise thing started....

I read a bit at web-site Fat2Fit radio ( recommended by scbibhouse in her diary) - they have an approach of more moderate calorie control - which works a life-long/maintenance approach - they recommend to budget your calories for a BMR at your target weight- (they have calculator on their home-page) then you learn to eat portions that will maintain you at target, while gradually losing to your target...... very interesting approach .... I did calculate my maintenance calories ( they come out around 2,000 cals/day for an interim target (my final target is too low to eat at with my current weight) - I've been trying this maintenance amount for a few days - it feels good, I feel "calm" -not that panicky/hungry/anxious feeling I get with low-cal... , and feels good to know that even with this higher calorie plan - will still lose weight to target eventually - much slower loss- but will get there....

~ wishing everyone a good week,

Maryann c.

Hi davidmartin414 -

- I totally agree with your comments that moderation , not starvation - much easier & safer to keep up for long-term...:iagree:

- I did find the Rotation Diet - "low-cal" days too low for me - I ws cranky and major stressed.

- I have modified this past week to a daily calorie target for around 2,000 calories( this is 500cals/day below my BMR ( basal metabolic calories ) - my BMR is 2,400 cals/day at my current weight )

- I am much more comfortable, I am not stuffed, but am not starving anymore either...just at a nice balanced level of "lightly satisfied"...

- I have added daily exercise ,

- and have also found some motivational Pod casts and some Psychotherapy recordings on developing healthy eating habits...

..so far, is working ( it's looking like a weight loss for me again this week) & my pants are starting to feel a bit looser...

...so yup, for me, the more-moderate/ less-extreme approach is working.

thankyou for the sound advice,

Maryann C.

I haven't visited this site in quite a while because a lot of folks were not really following the Rotation Diet (using 'modified versions') & no one was complaining about how hungry they were!! :) Having been on this diet before, I know how terribly hungry you can get on low-cal days -- especially in the beginning -- and, I was looking for someone to say, "Yeah, me too!". That, alone can keep you going -- knowing someone was that hungry yesterday can help you be that hungry today! Anyway, I'm glad I checked back because it seems all the more recent posts are from folks who are following the diet more closely and are being honest about their hunger.

I have to tell those who are unsure about this diet that it works perfectly (don't worry about those little ups & downs -- it all evens out in the end. I promise!:)!! Years ago, when I successfully lost weight -- and, began exercising daily -- by following this program, I would say it should come stamped with "GUARANTEED' on the cover! I told my doctor that I will only use this reducing diet because I understand -- and, 'believe' in -- the science behind it. For those who have not read the book (which is not that long -- there are lots of pages devoted to recipes & menus, that you don't have to read) you really should give it a go. When you understand what he tells you about your metabolism & physical activity you will be a believer, too. If anyone still wants a specific answer to either metabolism or physical activity -- as it pertains to this diet (I'm not a nutritionist or personal trainer!:) -- I'd be very glad to try to answer it. I still have my book -- so, if I don't remember, I'll look it up.

I keep using the word 'believer'. Please know that I mean no disrespect by using what most folks consider a religious term for something like this -- but, I really don't know what other word to use! :) If you are as convinced as I am that the Rotation Diet can produce the results you want, then please keep posting!! I haven't found my will to start, yet -- but, I want to very, very soon.

It occurred to me that you all will wonder why I gained back the weight I lost on this diet (way back in the '80's) if it's such a 'perfect' diet! Please know that when I stopped following the maintenance diet -- and, I stopped exercising -- the weight began to creep back on. When I stuck to the maintenance program and walked (all I ever had to do was walk -- not hard at all! :) I kept the weight off!! So, don't let my bad example discourage you, okay? :)

Hope to see you online, soon ....:seeya:

Hi Momma - ...fellow Rotation gal, - no worries on "bad example"....I think most of us folks on this site are here because we have found out & know all too well that keeping weight in check isn't always easy and takes some work .

- sorry for this long post - but once I started typing.....didn't realize how much I am learning/thinking on weight-loss over past few weeks using this site..... here's a bit of where I'm at now...and some of how I got here....

~ my experience with Katahn's Rotation diet sounds similar to yours - I did have some pretty good weight loss back a few years ago ( late 1980's) with Rotation diet - I was in my late 20's back then...but I seemed to cope with the low-cal / really hungry days much better back then.~ The weight has crept-back for me too....life marched on , I got married - started cooking "big meals" for hubby , eating out more, middle-age -slower metabolism, no more aerobics classes ...all has led to fatty back-on-board for me.....

~ I do totally agree on the walking /exercise ......thru early spring this year - I had made a fairly consistent habit of walking each noon-break at work for a 1/2hr....when summer hit & it got really hot outside - I slacked-off on my walks....and sure enuf - 5lbs. did creep back-on ( no eating change....just missing the walks )....

~ now, at middle-age - 51yrs old - weight has gotten really high - just can't afford to keep "coasting" ....worried for my health , and really need to tackle my weight ,and am very tired of trying & failing at weight loss attempts ....I did try going back to Rotation Diet early last month- but found the low-cal days were just "too hungry" ?...for me ....I would get this very very strong "driven" crave/hunger in late afternoon,...tried drinking water, tried the safe fruit....helped a bit - but most afternoons- ended up breaking the diet...I am thinking that now that I am 51yrs old - my body has changed, and just cannot "handle" the 600cal days...? ( I am also much heavier than when I did the Rotation diet initially in the 80's).-maybe 600cals just isn't wise or doable at my current weight.

~ I have read a couple very good articles on this site about weight-loss being a very individual/ person-specific process

( I'll dig-up the links & post here shortly- )

- these articles discuss how each person is different in what works for them, and what they are able to tolerate.... , and reviews approaches of calorie restriction , types of diets, exercise types, lifestyle plans , good overviews.

- I've started listening to some good pod-casts on-line (recommended by a member here (Fat2Fit radio)), also trying some hypnosis downloads ( 20minutes daily - positive reinforcement of healthy eating/lifestyle- I find them very calming and self-confidence booster)

- I am currently trying calorie counting (eating to my recommended calories for my age/weight - less 500cals/day -(there's a good BMR calculator on that Fat2Fit site ,or just google BMR for sites calculate calories you need to maintain current weight and how much to reduce calorie intake to lose).

- I have added in daily exercise...started with daily walking my dog, have just this week added back my noon-break walk at work...and just yesterday added walking on tread-mill at home... will need to work to keep this exercise up...as you said- the walking does'nt "Feel" like a big effort - but over time....it does ward-off weight gain....and maybe enuf of it routinely...will help with weight loss.

- so far, my loss is slow - but am seeing some loss...and from some posts I've seen on here...weight-loss in middle-age folks is harder/slower than when you are younger

- I am finding this more moderate approach is more manageable ( am not getting the cranky-craving attacks that the extreme low-cal did to me...)...but the weight loss is quite slow....

~ I am also thinking & agree with you that there is something to the "science" behind Katahn's rotation diet - Katahn's did work for me in the past & there is some new work on a similar approach - Intermittant Fasting - ( similar idea to Katahn's approach- but even more difference in calories - I need to read a bit more on it - but intermittant fasting appears to incorporate almost no calories - complete fast for 16-20 hours 1 day each week, and moderate calories rest of week )....very interesting....

~ I hope you find the "energy" to get going again soon too yourself Momma, will be eager to see your progress on here....

cheers,

Maryann

Hi Momma,

here is the WLF article on approaches to weight loss - individuality- ie. each person has differences in what will work for them.....

good read.

Hi Momma-

here is the second article one of the moderators here recommends....it's a bit of a long read...but I found it had a really good amount of excellent, non-hype info.

Hi, all-

You are right, Momma, about those first few days being TOUGH! When I did my last rotation, I psyched myself up by rereading the beginning of the book, having a "last day" fling to get the things I would miss the most out of the way, and then went to the grocery store before I started and bought a weeks worth of fruits and veggies. I had a ton of cut up cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, raw broccoli and carrots with low cal salad dressing, and my favorite, Gala apples. I was actually full that first day.

Normally fries are the kind of veggies I eat- sweet potato ones on a healthy day-, but for me, a little low cal dressing goes a long way, and I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed eating all that stuff. Now, I did just have some bacon brownies the day before! But it is a diet that lets you go back to the bad stuff in moderation eventually, so you CAN have pizza again in your lifetime, and have lost the weight too if you are patient.

Which brings me to the reason I keep coming back to the rotation diet-- metabolism! The first time I lost weight with it, I was shocked that the celebratory pizza I indulged in didn't put a dent in my weight. That's not to say you can go crazy, but the weight doesn't sneak back on. I had to have surgery last year and afterwards had a 6 week recovery. I lost a lot of weight by the time I was ready to come home ( the one good thing that came of the experience), and I was looking to keep off as much as I could. I didn't feel like eating a lot, but eventually I would have more during meals, and then a little chocolate... I was horrified to see the number on the scale continue to go up. I wasn't eating as much as I had before, and I was still gaining weight! My metabolism had slowed down, and I couldn't do much about it at the time. My body thought it was starving, and was determined to hang onto every calorie. I ended up weighing MORE than I did before surgery.

The rotation diet doesn't slow down your metabolism. That says it all for me. You see people talking about cutting their calories way down, but then where do they go when they stop? I have been guilty of going to Weight Watchers meetings and trying to work their plan into the schedule of the rotation diet. If my metabolism ever slows, you will see me talking out of the other side of my mouth- but until then, I will stick with Dr. Katahn.

Good luck this week!! -Starsnfire
