So over this weekend I competed in a tourney and lost all my matches by points. Here's what I learned:

1.) I have to play my game more. What is my game? Explosive, quick, most comfortable attacking when I have the back and they are in turtle. Lots of double unders, lots of sweeps.

2.) Need to work takedowns a lot.

3.) Need to train harder before tourneys. I trained, but I did not train to compete. On my last days I was still just kind of chilling and experimenting with different ways of playing. This is not how to train for competition. Again, I need to play my game, but I need to keep my game sharp. Experimenting with other **** without playing my game for weeks is not going to cut it.

4.) The fact that you're competing doesn't make you a winner

5.) Nutrition, diet, conditioning was all dialed in. Just need to learn jiu jitsu.

I also want to say I believe my skill level is higher than all the people that were in my weight class. By all means, I should have won first. Which is stupid of me and I am sorely disappointed. I have been training hard and learning. Well it's time I showed it.

Going to write some thoughts down about today's training. Here's an outline of what we did:

1.) Drills: toriando pass to knee belly, double unders to pass to side control
2.) Tons of abs
3.) armbar from turtle, clock choke, x guard clock choke
4.) drill from turtle with thumb in deep gi.
5.) drill from back with deep gi. Most unbalanced drill. Ever. People were going to sleep like crazy. That's what happens when white belts with some experience get this position on proud higher belts.
6.) Free roll

Thoughts:

1.) Bringing back my old game feels good
2.) Need to work on passing
3.) Need to work on getting off bottom. Not a good bottom player as I think
4.) Need to learn how to surf opponents

2 hours nogi jits.

1.) when starting on knees, need to maintain balance better.
2.) Learned a pass when opponent is sitting. One hand grabs foot and holds it down, other arm passes under leg. Head goes on same side as underhooked leg. Pass onto free side with trapped leg on floor.
3.) Better side control. Transition to other angle when opponent is pushing you off.
4.) Body triangle defense. Protect neck, grab opponent's outside leg, triangle it. Push on knee for straight ankle lock. Beware of RNC
5.) Need to get in tight for the ankle lock. Once you have the ankle, GET IN. Don't fall back. You will almost always loose the sub.
6.) Don't jump the gun to the guillotine. Guillotine only works with legs in the equation. Otherwise it makes it easy for opponent to pass.
7.) Instead of trying to go for guillotine, push head down. Guillotine pulls head up and makes a pass easy if no guard is established
8.) Head and arm sweep. Keep head down, grab posted arm on same side as stuffed head. pull in, and sweep. If opponent taps, you are DQ'ed for illegal spine lock. OK for sweep
