Hey Kimmy, good picture, but I didn't picture you with a beard.

Let us know how the riding goes.

LOL, Rob! Yeah...no...I don't have a beard, lol! My husband has a beard like yours, though!
Aimingglow: It's only a mile to my workplace from my house, but there is one steep hill right before arriving to my work, that I could only get halfway up before having to get off the bike and walk the rest of the way up the hill. That will end up being my goal for when I'm riding my bike. There is a short small hill near my house that brings my heart rate up a little when I go back home. It's just that steep hill on my way to work that's a little annoying. But, I'm glad it's not all flat terrain anyway.

I would never ride a bike in a dress, though. But, I actually don't remember the last time I wore a dress. And I don't quite agree with the "Bye bye spare tires". That was actually the first thing I had to do to get the bike usable, since it was sitting in the garage for forever and a day. We tried pumping the tires up and one of the inner tubes popped and I ended up having to walk up to the nearest hardware store (that is shortly before my mile route to my work, so about .8 miles, maybe?) to get another one. That was when my car needed fixing and it took a week to get it all done.

I wish my two boys, ages 4 and 6 years old now, could ride bikes to their school with me (which is also about a mile away from home). They're not quite ready for that. I can't stand walking in the heat, though. I'm going to have to drive the car to take them and pick them up from school and then in the afternoon to evening is when I'll be riding my bike to work and back.

I just bought a water repellent spray for my shoes, too, since I work around water a lot and they are the vented fabric kind that breathes really well, but soak up water like a sponge and get my feet all wet. I've actually used the hand dryer in the bathroom to dry my socks and sneakers, so my feet aren't wet all day! I have to wait till my day off, so they have time to dry and cure.

I'm glad I can be excited about riding a bike to work! But, being 37 yrs old now and always been about 150 lbs, I want to finally get in shape and make it stick, so I wanted to get at least a few basics, like the seat cushion, the bike lights and rain poncho, to make as many rides as pleasant as possible. It hasn't rained as much as it has, but at least every other day, there is a shower.

I especially like the sound of a comfortable bike seat. I like biking, as a way to get around - oh, and I love your poster on the benefits of cycling! There are downsides - like traffic, air pollution (but all city-dwellers are facing that), and needing to lock it up every single time - but over all, it's a great means of urban and peri-urban transport.

I saw this video about inventions that really should be used more often and there was one that was really cool. In France, they have charging stations for your phone that is run by pedaling. You sit on a stationary bike, get exercise and charge your phone at the same time! I wish they had those here.

My bike stuff hasn't come in yet. It ended up getting delayed and should now be delivered by Monday.

5 goals I have that I want to check off everyday:
1. Skip the sugar in my coffee. Only creamer.
2. Do 50 squats, 50 pushups and a 30 second plank.
3. Pull out my stepper and use it for 10 minutes in the morning and after work.
4. Avoid soda, drink more water or unsweetened tea.
5. Ride my bike to work.

I'm going to get rid of goal 1, since it's easy to use the splenda packets instead of sugar now.
Goal 2 has become so much easier to do. Today I did a 45 second elbow plank, 45 second full plank, 60 squats and 30 pushups. Even decided to dance with my 4 yr old today, lifting him up in the air! That was really fun.
Goal 3...well, I really need to get on here more often to keep myself more responsible. Lol...that's all I can say.
Goal 4 is easier at home than at work. Still having soda every once in a while.
Goal 5: Still waiting on my stuff. Right before work today, it downpours. Had to use an umbrella just to get to my car in the driveway!8d251f46a6cc3d2f637cc192b85b1269.jpg

I am quite impressed, I doubt I could do any squats or pushups, and I'm not sure what the plank things are. I can however lift a 4 year old, but not sure about the dance part! Good for you, keep it up and you'll meet your weight goal and be quite fit doing it!

I'm very impressed too. I could do the squats I think, but my knees would complain. Dancing with your 4-year old would have been lots of fun :)

With planks, you want to hold the position for as long as you can. You use a lot of muscles to stay in that position. Your body ends up shaking a little trying to hold it. You want to keep your body as straight as possible without sticking your butt out too much. I used the timer on my phone. I feel like I could probably hold them for a minute each, I just haven't tried yet. But, alligatorob, you should try some bodyweight exercises! I think those are the best kind. The only weight you need to do them is your own weight!

I don't do a lot of those exercises, but a good reference chart! There are so many variations that I seem to find new exercises all the time! I bet this is only half of the exercises you can find on the subject.

Thanks for the replies, guys, it makes it so much more cooler to use this place, since you make new friends!

Please be careful with planks, they are not a great exercise, they can exacerbate and cause back and shoulder problems and do not work the muscles claimed on the info-graphic. A better exercise to choose for example would be the reverse plank. The same can be said for sit ups which cause tears in the muscles of the back.

Just so you know, I am not dismissing what you are saying about exacerbating previous problems. Of course if it hurts, you shouldn't do it! Or make sure you have proper form because that can give you undue pain. But when you build muscle, it causes tiny tears in the muscle tissue, which then repair itself, resulting in larger muscles. Look it up, it's true!

Kimmy, I am assuming you did not see my qualifications in my signature, I do understand micro tears for building muscle, the tears I am talking about are not related to building stronger muscles they are related to actual injury. As i said the infographic is wrong.

From my perspective planks are a) very hard to get right for 95% of people (fitness models almost always do them wrong because it looks prettier that way) and b) only useful if you do dynamic variations. I don't think I've found a reason to make a single patient do 30-second static planks in the 15 years I've been working as a therapist. Apart from that: Tru's expertise is always worth listening to, even if you end up making a different choice for yourself.

Like I said, I wasn't dismissing anything you were saying and I'm sorry, I didn't realize when I made the post that you were a sports trainer, etc, that's why I said if it hurts, of course you shouldn't do it. Wasn't trying to start an argument on the subject. I will keep what you said in mind.

Actually, I don't understand why, but I was on my phone when I made the other post and it doesn't show signatures over a smartphone, but it does on the computer, so I didn't see that you were the coach at all in the other post.

I did get my bike stuff in, but I haven't had the chance to use them yet. My 4 yr old hasn't been able to go to school yet because he's in pre-k with a different program related to the school and they haven't had all their ducks in a row. Has taken a toll on my sleep, since I had to get used to getting up at 6:30 in the morning again and going to bed too late. I've also been reduced on my hours at work and one of those days, they had called me in early, so as soon as I dropped my 6 yr old off from school, I had to run off to work.
I have been doing my squats, push ups and planks though. Not every day, but most days. I am down to 146 lbs, though!

Good pick up Rob! Well done, Kimmy :)
