Weight-Loss Is Diet Soda bad for you?

Weight-Loss
All I know is that if I drink water I drink water I lose weight - if I drink diet soda my weight loss stops (and regular soda just want to be brought into the equation!)

I know that everyone's body responds differently, but im gonna have to agree with bitznbats- that my weight loss comes to a screeching halt when I consume 1 or 2 diet cokes a day. (tear).

Oh and to make a comment on the original question? I've read that the chemical aspartame is not recognized by the body and so the body has a hard time trying to release it. It works by tricking the brain into thinking its tasting something sweet, when in actuality it is not. Here's a little trick you can try to prove this theory. Drink a Diet Coke (or your favorite diet beverage) and then eat something semi-sweet. It will taste VERY sweet for that moment because of what the aspartame is telling your brain.

And as far as it causing cancer? I guess only time will tell...

The study(popular to the media) that found that diet sodas are worse than normal/full sugar sodas was based on the percentage of the population that was over wieght who drank diet soda and those who drank normal soda, and the reverse for a group of people who where not overwieght.

Point being of course the study showed that more overwight people drink diet soda for obvious reasons.

The part of the study that was an imperical study shows us that there are more nutrients in normal soda(sugars) where there is very little if any nutrients in diet soda.

I should have a link here to cite the information, but I do not have it anymore.

Diet soda.

I know that the fake sugars in diet soda are harmful, but I've also heard that diet soda can cause you to gain MORE weight than regular soda. I drink about a can a day. Does anyone think this will have an effect on my weight loss?

Don't drink anything but water and ocassionally natural fruit juice. I dropped 40lbs in four months by only cutting out soda. My diet is still shitty and im still hovering at 215lbs but as soon as I get the full diet straightened around it'll start coming off again.

Oh I forgot, don't drink sports drinks. If you do, not more than one a day. I usually have one per game for hockey and thats it. Although something like my mix of Red Bull Sugar Free and Blue Powerade is still healthier calorie wise than a regular coke.

The sweeteners in diet soda are 100% safe with moderate consumption, If you aren't drinking a 2liter bottle everyday you'll be fine.

As far as hearing them help you gain weight, caffeine in cola is a diuretic which may lead to water retention but otherwise theres nothing in diet soda that will directly add fat to your body.

there's a thread or two on the subject (i'll search for them eventually) and both weight watchers magazine and prevention magazine had articles the past year that did state that diet soda could contribute to weight gain.

I'd ditch them and just drink water...

There's tons of controversy about the safety of the sweetners in diet soda...and I've seen convincing arguements on both sides about whether they help contribute to weight loss/weight gain. For me the most important fact in deciding to drink or not drink is credible research that shows even moderate consumption (I think it was slightly more than one can a day) of cola itself, diet or otherwise, contributes to loss of bone density in women.

I can drink 2 ltrs easy

And what happen if I drink 2 litres a day? I can drink very easy 2 litres a day. I'm not saying I do, but there's been days that I've done it. Not drinking any water at all and just diet soda.

Do what I do.

Go slowly off diet drinks. Don't just CUT them out. I couldnt do that.

I went from 5 a day (4-5 times a week) to 2-3 a day and now down to 1 a day

It helps going slowly off them.

Where can I find the threads about diet soda and weight gain. I've been drinking diet soda since I was in high school...that's about 8 years or so.

Am I sabotaging my chances of losing weight? I usually drink one diet coke a day, if that. Usually 2-3 a week. I'm talking about the 12 oz. bottles...

Drinking 2-3 a week is not going to sabotage your chances of losing weight. Drinking 1-2 a day may possibly.

Some here have said it makes you THINK you are hungrier than you really are and it contains some non-healthy things but overall...2-3 a week will not kill you.

A can of diet soda per day is perfectly OK.As far as I know the artificial sweeteners in diet soda are safe

Theres more to these drinks then just Fake sugar...

I say avoid it all together. Its full of phosphoric acid which can easily cause an imbalance in the body's calcium, magnesium, phosphorus. I believe the leading cause of soft tissue calcification in the nation is because of soft drinks and their high phosphorus count. As-well as it is theorized that the reason we are the leading nation with osteoporosis is thanks at-least in part to soft drinks.

They usually contain aspartame which has been time and time again shown to enhance cancer and tumor growth.

Acesufame potassium(SP?) is another ingredient usually in there that should be avoided much like its Aspartame brother Because recently and not so recently it has been shown to raise cancer risk as-well.

one coke (its carbonated water content) has been shown to cause permanent damage to the tooth. Again its theorized that soft drinks are one of the leading causes of tooth decay in people. Only not from the sugar content but from the Phosphoric acid and Carbonation combination.

My point being, Coke and most other sodas are entirely unhealthy.

I drink diet soda from time to time, and it hasnt hurt me one bit.

AND, I have when I was 25 lbs over weight, and it in fact did not impede my fat loss one little bit. Though I can see the concerns on the ingredients; however, most are calorie free, and THUS THIS STATEMENT:

The calorie is THE BOSS, and the nutrients in this caloric content can be the DECISION MAKER.

I wouldnt be overly concerned with the contents. Aspertame from an article I read (from FDA), has just disproven any cancer links to this artifical sweetner. Most importantly, though, its the caloric content that matters, and drinking this has 0 calories, and wont impede on the defict side of the equation which is what ultimately matters, anyway.

I agree with the others... just drink water! I don't want to put anything fake in my body anymore and aspertame is definately not real.

THe only thing I am saying is it didnt impede my fat loss, the arguement on the ingredients are a different subject matter.

I can assure you Im no ones fool (I drank diet soda throughout my diet and training and STILL my abs POPPED, and it was made in the kitchen mainly), and no where in my post did I say I agreed with FDA, I just stated an inference to a study they were involved in. If one wants to argue the contents this is fine, but as far as fat loss, it WILL NOT HURT YOU in caloric side of the equation which is a IMPORTANT FACTOR.

And, I agree completely that WATER is the better by far choice.

It is becoming whether tiresome to continually see you boast about your abs time after time after time...
Don't mean to sound rude. But, you honestly talk about your own body in nearly every single post. Between here and training.fitness I'm becoming very sick of you talking bout how your Abz "POPPED"!!!
Just quit mentioning them so much man.

I think you just read what you wanted to read in the threads I posted in, and are just have "wrong self perception" of what I wrote. I have tried to help others and this is my goal. Yes, I have made comments from time to time, but not nearly close in the CONTEXT you are meaning. You need to re-evaluate your thoughts, and if your tired of these kinds of thoughts do something about them, and this is nothing to do WITH YOU nor the purpose of this thread. I hope you have a great day, and if I can assist you with anything let me know. Now, get your problem solved, k?
