Weight-Loss Is Diet Soda bad for you?

Weight-Loss
I literally had a 2 -3 pot a day coffee habit for years - and I drank good coffee - not maxwell house or folgers - that brown water masquerading as coffee --i drank good strong cuban coffee or espresso... drank it black -so theoretically there was nothing wrong with it... and it didn't affect my insomnia- infact I probably slept better caffeinated... When I gave up coffee.. I had headaches that rivalled migraines that I get... where my hair would hurt... but it doesn't last - the withdrawl headaches last about 3 days... the withdrawk crankiness - well I was cranky before... so... it never goes away

I have recently discovered the new Diet Ocean Spray (cranberry and citrus). It only has 5 calories per serving, no caffeine, and 2 grams of sugar per serving. At most, I drink one diet drink per day, but I would like to totally cut that out. The cranberry juice tastes like regular juice, so I don't mind drinking it (I don't like to drink plain water). Just my 2 cents! :)

wow, I didn't know that. I stopped drinking regular soda years ago, but I would drink diet soda on occasion..and I did realise that after I would drink it..I would really want something sweet...and I would usually get it. I have been diet soda free for weeks now.

Troutman, I have been soda-free for three months now. It feels good.

I highly recommend just getting rid of soda, be it diet or otherwise. It is not in the slightest bit necessary.

so would it be better to drink normal soda over diet? obviously it is best not to have any, but sometimes i just want a soda

it is definatly not better to drink a regular soda!! That should be a no-no!!

I am still going to drink a diet soda when I get in my soda moods..atleast there are no added calories.

BigBear, It feels good how? Like I said some time this month it will be one year I have not had any soda of any kind. It feels incredible, wonderful, fantastic, unbelivable etc. Because it is a great accomplishment. It can not be healthy to be having a min. of 12 diet sodas a day. Physically I feel no differnt at all.

alexia, If your trying to lose weight don't have reg. soda. You will just be having empty calories. If your not losing weight I don't know I've never looked into it.

just checking, i've never been a regular soda drinker (my parents were diet soda people so i just became one), and i've only ever heard bad things about it, but just thought i would ask

They use the word "Diet" soda, so all of us "dieters" will just feel better about drinking a coke. They have to market to everyone....we're all suckers..

Well not to disagree or insult anyone; but I really do like diet soda, its what I was raised on, and well it keeps me from eating candy.

I work at a gas station, plenty of candy, and plenty of time to eat it. But when I really need a little treat, I can get a cup of diet coke, for zero calories.

Now keep in mind, I drink 3-4 litters of water a day, ATLEAST. I almost think I could drink too much water some times (i come home from work 3-4 pounds heavier then I started the day, which after about 3 hours is gone, so I assume its all water weight).

I never could get past the diet taste. Think when I just gotta have a coke ill get one of those 100 calorie cans. So far I have done fine without both....

I have just given up on Soda all together. I used to average 2 or 3 cans of Soda a day at work and then more when I got home. I have not touched soda for 10 months except maybe 1 glass of gingerale when I was sick.

what? Maybe that study is true, maybe it isn't. I've been losing weight, 50lbs. since January and I DO drink diet soda. At least 4 cans a week. Sometimes more or less. It's better than drinking regular soda or any drink with extra calories. Okay the bad thing is it stains teeth (unless you use a straw) and it can make you feel sick if you have a sensitive stomach (gas). Calories cause weight gain, not diet soda. As far as cravings, you will always have them because most food has sugar/carbs. The problem, I believe, is comforting yourself with too much food when you aren't hungry and drinking calories (unless it's a meal replacement).

I read that a teenager was doing a science project to see what was in diet coke. She kept a bottle in the fridge, a bottle at room temp., and one out in the sun. She sent the results out to be analyzed, and when it came back, it said that one of the components produced when it broke down was a component of formaldehyde. I quit drinking it when I read that. I have had diet coke after the expiry date, and it is disgusting.

I also used to drink 6-8 cans of it a day, and got ulcers from it. About once every month or so I would have excruciating pain in my stomach, but that never stopped me from drinking it. Not until I read about the formaldehyde. I'll see if I can find any info on that.

I still have some regular pop every day, but have cut it down to one a day. I need the caffeine, and don't like coffee or tea.

I've read this as well, but I'm wondering. What is it exactly that makes the diet sodas so bad? Is it the artificial sweetner or a combination of things? Because if it's the artificial sweetner, my guess is I should walk away from the Splenda. I've dumped sugar in my house for a few months now and use Splenda to sweeten tea and cook with. I thought it was "healthier," but a coworker recently told me that artificial sweetners were "toxic." Should I not do this?

A recent issue of Weight watcher's magazine had an article in it that stated asparatame, one of the ingredients that are in many diet sodas has been shown to stimulate the appetite...

I haven't had a soda, diet or otherwise, since the night a few years ago, I poured a glass of diet coke into the toilet because I was too lazy to walk to the kitchen... I came back 20 minutes later and after flushing -- the toilet was cleaner than if I used a gallon of bleach... :D Did I really want that in my tummy? :D
