hey nate.. gald you joined..

well first off.. avoid the Pills.. "i need to loose like 30-40 lbs becasue i want to become more healthy" pills do NOT equal healthy.

balanced diet and exercise =healthy!

I would suggest looking at what you eat... even write it down, they remove some of the bad and add in some fruits and vegetables. Counting Calories is a great way as well but since you are rather young i would consult your doctor or the school's nurse about what calorie range you shoudl stick too.

Then exercise!! Exercising doesn't have to be boring.. find something you like to do.. football.. backetball.. baseball.. weight lifting.. Cross Country.. and of course Wrestling.. plus you have a
GREAT upper hand.. you are in highschool.. you have a Gym.. take advantage of this class!! And talk to that teacher about maybe joining a team or something.

I will tell you my husband is a Coach for a highschool here in Florida. He coaches wrestling and I think that sport is probably teh best because they montior what they put in their body all the time, even the heavy weights. They use a ton of different muslces and are made to work out a LOT. Plus you dont have to worry about "i'm too heavy to play" because they have light weights all the way to heavy weights. Even I will go to their practices sometimes and have some fun.

Anyway I'm glad you came and keep us updated! Just remember those pills are not the answer and most people when they are done with the pills gain the weight back.. and that means you have just wasted your time and money. :)

Good luck!!

Weight loss

Hi..I am 5"0 and 120lbs. I was 150lbs but then started Dr Bernstein diet and lost 22lbs. I was then in a car accident and stopped the diet, and due to poor food choices gained back 11lbs. I decided not to go back on the dr b diet as it is very expensive. I can’t exercise due to injuries from the accident. So this is what I did.. I took some knowledge from dr b diet basically no carbs and no sugar (less then 20gr/day) and did a lot of internet searches.

This is my diet plan, and it really worked for me! I lost the 11lbs I gained after my accident, and Im still losing.

I don’t eat a lot of carbs, or sugars. for bread I buy dempsters bodywise it has 7gr of carbs per slice, if you don’t have that brand look around for low carb bread, it taste pretty good if you make a good sandwich (lettuce tomato, ham and low calorie cheese with mustard). I don’t eat to much fruit as fruit has a lot of sugar, I eat apples, and small amount of cantaloupe, in moderation and not everyday.
I eat 7, or 8 times a day, salads, chicken breast, turkey, very lean beef, and seafood (tuna, salmon, and sole) and tons of veggies with Italian dressing (low calorie) im never hungry because im eating all the time, and this boosts my metabolism.
I take omega 3 and calcium everyday as I don’t eat to much dairy. And if you do your research they both help with weight loss.
I have lost all together 30lbs in a short period of time, and feel great. With no pills and no exercise.

I have had success with "My low Carb diet success". I lost 21 lbs in 5 weeks. It is a real genius diet program. Eat more and get thin. It is actually quite interesting what your body does when you empty out all of your carbs in your body. Your body then starts to convert the fat into energy, because it does not have any carbs left.
Good luck with your weight loss. :)

Actually, your body starts breaking down lean muscle mass for energy, not fat. You need carbs to sustain lean muscle during any kind of exercise.

Carbohydrates are not bad! Our bodies need carbohydrates. However, it is important to focus on consuming complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are derived mainly from plants, including foods such as whole wheat bread, vegetables, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, legumes (beans), and other grains fall in this category. Carbohydrates are very important to the body since they are the primary source of energy. Some body tissues, such as red blood cells and most parts of the brain, can only use carbohydrate (glucose) for energy. You should eat 6-11 servings of carbohydrates each day, comprising 55-65% of your diet.
Carbohydrates are broken down by the body into glucose, which is a form of sugar that is carried in the blood and transferred to cells for energy. Some carbohydrates, such as pasta and bread, have been labeled fattening. This, however, can be said of all foods, no matter their nutritional makeup. When a person consumes too many calories, the excess will be stored as body fat, whether the foods were carbohydrates, proteins, or fats. Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram (protein = 4 cal/gram, fat = 9 cal/gram).

Do not restrict your body of carbs, you'll need them. Instead lower your calorie intake.

In regards, to nol3afclover post. This is just an opinion. I will posts some links that will educate you along the way to your weight-loss goal. Sometimes it is better to see facts then hear opinions. When I first started my journey to lose weight, I listened to too many people tell me what they thought was best, and everyone has their own opinion on what works and what doesn’t. If you go through your research the results will speak for themselves.
First of all low carb diets are not unhealthy, and they do work. They are not easy to do as convenience food is full of sugar and carbs, so making your lunch and bringing snacks with you when you go out, and making healthy choices when eating out will help. And just try to stay as determined as you can and motivated by the results. I have been doing low carb diet for 1.5 months and I have lost 15lbs so far.
The trick is to never be hungry, eat lots of veggies the greener the better, limit your fruit as some fruit is full of sugar, and fill up on protein. There are lots of myths out there 1 website I recommend you read is
-
another good thing to read on is ketosis, that’s when your body is burning fat as energy because there are no carbs to burn, there are many myths that this is dangerous but it is not what is dangerous is Ketoacidosis which is a diabetic condition, do not confuse the two they are completely different, for more info on Ketosis
-
also read up on calcium and weight loss, and omega 3 they really make a huge difference. I was stuck at 137lbs for the longest time.. I started taking vitamins like omega3, calcium, chromium, potassium and b6&b12 combo. Once I started taking the calcium I started to lose again, and the omega kick started it even more. You can google each vitamin to see the benefits. And also speak to your Dr if you have any personal concerns.

I suggest that you do some research, everyone is going to have their own opinions, and this is what worked for me. Good luck!!=)

Excellent post.

I’m not saying carbs are bad..I’m just saying that to lose weight it is best for your body to burn fat as energy, that essentially is how you lose weight. If your eating carbs, then your body is using what you eat as energy, and not stored fat. Everybody is different, for example people who are insulin resistant. To maintain weight you can eat complex carbs but to lose weight it is best to only get carbs from vegetables and fruits, not man made products such as bread, pasta, rice and so forth.

You can eat carbs while losing weight, but limit them, everything is in moderation. And everybody's body type is different

also if someone lowers their calorie intake per day, but is still consuming most of their calories from carbs, they will not lose, but either maintain or gain weight, a balanced diet is the best and 55-60% carbs in your diet is way to much, unless your body building or are very active.

Why do people keep saying fruits are bad for, the sugar in a piece of peach or apple is not the same sugar from candy or soda.

Fruits contain natural complex sugar that give you energy throughout the day
I eat 5-6 pieces of fruit a day and I don't gain any weight from it.

Fruit is in no way 'bad' for you, however as any other thing, too much of a good thing, is a bad thing. IE, an average watermelon contains about 1500 calories, if you eat the whole thing in a day (I could!), you'll be taking in too many calories even though it's a fruit and naturally deemed a 'good' food. However watermelon contains about 97% water and the rest is NATURAL sugars, which is good for your body. The sugar you don't want to be consuming are processed sugars, such as the ones in candy, icecream, etc...

Fruit is good for you, make sure you eat at least 3 servings per day but don't overdo it, as it could turn into a bad thing.

There's a big difference between losing weight, and losing fat. When losing weight, you're losing water, fat, and muscle. If you restrict carbs from your body or go on a ridiculously low carb diet, chances are that you're losing alot more muscle than you'd probably want to.

It really doesn't work like that.

A caloric deficit is a caloric deficit. You could be eating all carbs or all fat for all I care. If you are in a caloric deficit, your body is going to oxidize fat.

also if someone lowers their calorie intake per day, but is still consuming most of their calories from carbs, they will not lose, but either maintain or gain weight,

Homie say wha?

See above. A deficit is a deficit. If you are creating a negatige-energy-atmosphere.... how on earth does your body maintain it's energy reserves?

Not if you eat your protein, take vitamins, and do as much strength training as you can. Ketosis burns fat, not muscle.

So your saying if you eat mcdonalds 3 times a day, and then lower your calories to only eat it twice a day you will lose weight??

So your saying if you eat mcdonalds 3 times a day, and then lower your calories to only eat it twice a day you will lose weight??

What in the Lord's name?

When did I say anything about McDonalds?

I'm saying if you are in a caloric deficit, you are going to lose weight. Period.

I think Bridget was just giving an example of reducing calorie intake. I think she has a point. You do have to balance your carbs, fat, protein, etc... to take in the maximum benefits for weight loss.

I think that for some if they can eat low carb and continue to maintain that lifestyle - instead of reverting back to their old ways, then it's not a diet, but a way of eating.

There are like 3 different body types. Those who never gain weight (no matter what they try), those who easily gain muscle, and those who have always been and will always be "chubby". Oh and they have names for these body types - Ectomorph, Mesomorph, Endomorph (I believe.) And for each body type there is a way to eat and workout to get the maximum benefits and reach your goal towards weight loss.

You also have to account for a person's medical history as well, before offering advice of what they can and can't eat. For example, a diabetic can eat carbs, but they have to monitor them, they can't just eat carbs all day and keep their sugars in balance - it just doesn't work that way.

Also, if a person ate only donuts all day long and kept their cals at a certain level, they might initially lose weight, but after awhile they wouldn't. And their body would not like it.

I think that when we give advice, we should read into what the OP is originally asking. If they are asking for advice on a certain way of eating, they want to know how to get the maximum benefits from that way of eating. NOT what you think they should be doing. I'm sure they've read enough about the disadvantages of the "diet".

There are always disadvantages and benefits of every way of eating or "diet" out there. A diet is a short term fix, but in order for it to have lasting results it has to be a long term commitment. If one way of eating doesn't work for an individual there is no reason, why they can't "switch" to something that they will be able to manage.
