ok i have a question:
why is it that i can i run 11 miles, but get winded and out of breath from walking up about 30 steps?? this continues to frustrate me. i exercise and exercise, but feel that i'm not getting in shape. isn't that weird?

I've been doing maybe 1.5 hrs/cardio all year, a little less in the summer since my gym lacks air conditioning/fans/windows  , and I have the same issue! I think one of my problems with that, though is usually when I'm walking stairs on campus, I'm generally toting a 20+ lb. booksbag. I guess it's just one of those weird things.

I really don't know why you can't run but do stairs. I can't do both w/out feeling like I'm going to die.

Good luck with the bathing suit thing. We wanna see pics of what you pick out.

i think you are totally right about the 20 lb bookbag! it's definitely worse when i'm lugging a lot of stuff around (and I usually am!)

got through the work day without an afternoon snack! yay!
now for the messy rainy commute home (yuck) and hopefully a nice 30 min jog on the treadmill and whatever leg exercises i can find in my fitness magazine.
i did get some sugar free wrigley's orbit citrus/mint gum...it is SOOO good...you guys have to try it. it takes like those orange creamsicles you used to get from the good humor truck as a kid!

Never thought it about that way. I remember those days of school and backpacks. Now that I look back at it, I did was in the same position. I couldn't do the stairs either and it didn't help that I smoked. I still did it, but if I was already had campus before class started, I took the elevator. I didn't want to huff and puff. It hurt so damn bad, it wasn't funny.

IMHO,your body is used to running only..u should introduce some more exercise even climbing stairs..etc,etc
by doing this only u will get in shape
and wow 11 miles??u cam run a marathon girlie
or maybe half marathon?

I try to be positive. If you have a positive attitude, it makes it easier to get to your goal, even though things in our lives keeps you from achieving it from time to time.

i have never run in a race before, but i'd like to! i always run on the treadmill because i have had bad experiences running on pavement (knee pain/inflammation). but i think if i train myself to run outside by starting small, maybe i could do it. i think i'm going to sign up for a 10K (6.2 miles) with my friend for the end of the summer! that would be a good start. i've run 7 miles on a track and felt great, so I think if i run 4-5 on pavement a couple times, i'll be able to do the 10K injury free. a marathon feels like a LONG way off. a half-marathon might be doable in the near future, though :)

just a note to beginning runners and how to up your mileage: i remember when i couldn't run 2 miles in 20 minutes without feeling like i was going to die, and that was only 3 years ago! now i can easily run 7 miles (8:20 minutes/mile). i was on a plateau for a while, where I would run 4 miles in about 35 minutes, but then i started just adding on extra miles at the end of that run at a slower pace (like 6.0 mph). then the next day i would run like 3 miles as fast as i could, and then tried a longer run at a slower pace. if i kept changing it up like this, i found that i could get out of my 4 mile rut. It feels GREAT to run so far, but I'm having MAJOR blister problems right now. I think I actually have a blister inside of a blister in my arch (ew!). So the last few days i've only been able to do elliptical and bike while it heals...SUCKS!

i'm one step ahead of you slimsadie! i actually FINALLY started trying strength training exercises yesterday and this morning.
after 20 minutes of cardio (elliptical), here's what i tried:
15 X2 reps of this stationary lunge thing for each leg while simultaneously lifting 3 lb weights. totaling 60 lunges! ooh the burn...
then i did this other move where you are in a pushup position and pull one knee under your chest for 1 count and then out to the side for 1 count and back in. i did 4 reps each leg and repeated 3 times, totaling 24.
then i did 50 situps on a balance ball.
not bad for a first day right?

then this morning, i woke up at 6:30 (woah) and did 20 min elliptical, 20 min bike, then 15 X4 = 60 deadlift-type squats holding 3 lb weights.
then this really cool move where you lie flat on your back with your heels on a bench and lift your hips up and hold, keeping your back straight. really feel it in your thighs and butt. i did 15 X3 =45.
also 50 situps on the balance ball.
i wanted to do some more ab work since i think the balance ball is too big for me, but couldn't really think of anything. any suggestions?

Wednesday - 17 days left!

feeling great today!
woke up this morning at 115.5 (YAY!!!!), starting to see results!

i actually stuck to my plan yesterday! no cheating! that gum definitely helped curb my hunger until dinner.
ended up switching to a nicoise salad instead of the previous plan, so dinner was:

lettuce (0)
less than 1/2 can tuna in oil (140)
1/2 can anchovy (50)
dressing (100)
1 egg white with some yolk (50)
string beans and tomato (0)
strawberry popsicle (50)

so yesterday ended up being only 1100 calories! and i burned 840 at the gym, so that was a total of 1340 burned (that's like 1/3 of a pound!)

i was very hungry when i woke up this morning, but i ate a big healthy breakfast:
B - bran flakes with milk (130)
granola bar (120)
egg beaters 1/2 cup (60)
banana (80)

lunch is:
carrots (40)
pear (70)
light yogurt (110)
2 tbsp hummus (50)
1 slice wheat bread (90)
tomato/spinach (0)

totaling 750 so far.
not sure what we're doing for dinner...but i'd like to stay under 1200 today.
that leaves 400 for dinner and 50 for a popsicle.

i will definitely go to the gym tonight. i want to run 7 miles, but i doubt my blister will have healed and i ran out of the good socks (have to do laundry tonight!). so i'll probably do elliptical for 30 min and try some more strength exercises.
fun fun fun!
it's amazing how much my mood improves when i'm not hating myself for being a pig. i really don't want to break down and binge this week. nothing tastes as good as thin feels!

close call...

so monday was my boss's birthday and we finally got around to celebrating today. just a few minutes ago everyone gathered around right behind my desk with a huge yellow cake with syrupy fruit and white icing on top. however, when offered a piece, i just said 'no thanks, no cake for me today'...then when everybody cleared out i ate a pear i had left over from my lunch and am chewing on some sugar-free gum now so that i'm not tempted to dig into the leftovers on the table behind me...
in reality, i don't even want to eat it! which feels amazing. i have just been doing so good, eating so healthy, it just doesn't even seem appetizing to me right now. and i'm not super hungry even though i've only eaten 750 cals so far today. just gotta keep this up!

thanks, slimsadie...
there's been times when i don't get to the gym for weeks. i get really busy during the school year (i'm in grad school), so i try to make up for during the summer!
it would be better if i could stick to it all the time though!

woah, did you really mean 12 mph? that's a 5 minute mile?!
