Gamer Thread

Yeah, what the hell did happen to the elves? And Anders becomes a giant A-hole... so much harder to find likable characters! Plus the whole storyline makes me feel like it's election time - do you pick the douchebag or the turd sandwich...

Some pretty serious gamers on here! Woop! I feel slightly less hard-core than I did when making this thread ;)

Any play Shadow of the Colossus? The team who made it are making a new one and I CANT WAIIIIIIT.

Looking forward to Diablo3, even though I doubt it will be anything outstanding - Blizzard seems to be more interested in WoW than anything else.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Seriously.. go to youtube and check out the preview.
incredible.
Especially the one where the barbarian smashes the walls dawn, and punches the ground, sending out shockwaves just like the hulk! :hurray:
...
oh... and....
diablo... PvP!

I was sooooo looking forward to Anders, and he's completely disappointing. They could have made so much more out of the Anders/Justice story.

The other characters are 'meh' at best - Isabella is a slut, and her little dirty comments are only entertaining for so long before it gets old. Carver/Bethany are constantly whinging, as well as Fenris, and Merrill is just....weird. She creeps me out to be honest. And what's up with all those horrible, fake accents?

And the big decision at the end is only big once - and even then you're stuck between the loonies and the idiots - they're both as bad as each other. Bah!!

As for Diablo, I've seen all the previews and the trailers at Blizzcon every year. Didn't do anything for me so far. Just another button-basher I'm afraid. they might just come up with a surprise when it gets released, but I'm not holding my breath to be honest. Been let down by Blizzard too many times.

And I hate PvP.

I'm a gamer geek too :)
My favourites are the final Fantasy series (especially XII) and the Shin Megami Tensei series.
RPG's are my thing ;)
I also love Guild Wars, anyone here that plays it too?
Sometimes I also play the Sims 3 but I get bored with that quickly...

So... did you play Diablo and D2? If you didn't like either of those, there's no reason to assume you'll like D3.
I however, am totally stoked.
It may be the first game that I actually preorder.

I never played the FFs.. don't know why.. I just don't enjoy the whole "manga" looking stuff.
While I haven't played guild wars, I am looking to get hooked into a new MMO, and GW2 might be totally awesome, so I guess I'm waiting to see what comes up next.

Yupp, I played both, extensively.

I think it's not so much about the game itself not being like the other two, or not being good, it's just that I am totally burned out on button-basher games, so I am hoping for something else, but I just don't think it's going to happen.

I have Diablo 3 on pre-order though - I think I pre-ordered it last October, so it's not as if I am not looking forward to it.

Got Fable on pre-order as well, even though I never played Fable 2 due to the lack of a console that would play it, so I hope it'll be anything like the first one.

Yeah, FF, you either love it or hate it, there's no middle ground ;)
I also like manga *swears she's not a weeaboo*
GW2 is looking AWESOME, I'm actually saving up for a new desktop computer (custom made) so I can play it as I currently only have a laptop, pretty sure GW2 won't run on that :p

How to stop gaming

Here's a good question to stir the pot a bit, and get this conversation going. How do you stop gaming? How do you know when you've crossed the line between having it be something you enjoy to having it be an addiction? How much is too much - especially when it starts effecting the relationships you have with other people? How many hours a week would you say is reasonable play time for an avid gamer, before it turns to addiction???

Hmm, difficult one. Same with any addiction I guess--If it stops you getting on with the rest of your life than it's a problem. I can go all week without playing but can easily sit down on a Sunday and play for 10 hours straight without eating/drinking.

My boyfriend plays a great deal more than I do and it stops him from getting on with uni work sometimes but only cause he'd rather be playing games than doing anything less fun!

What do you think?

Okay.. I gotta know.. which button bashers have you been playing?
Have you tried League of Legends?
Bloodline Champions?
which others?
your thoughts?

ONE SMALL REQUEST!!!!
Please.. if you're going to use acronyms, please write the meaning of the letters at least once in your post. I'd like to understand everything that we're talking about... thanks!
(ie.... DA = Dragon age)

Okay, I played WoW, Rift, Age of Connan, Aion, Lord of the Rings online, Fable, Diablo 1 + 2, DragonAge Origins and DragonAge2, Buffy and Chaos Bleeds. All button-bashers, either 'press 1 to hit things, press 2 to hit things harder' or 'press red button to hit things, press blue button to hit things harder'.

DA and Fable are kind of exceptions (probably the reason I still play DA), because despite the button bashing, a large part of the game is actually about lore and character development rather than fighting, which I like.

No, never tried any of the games you mentioned. I'm rather limited when it comes to playtime, but I'll have a look at them.

As for getting addicted, you said it yourself, when it starts affecting your relationships with other people and with what is going on around you, there's a good indication that you're overdoing it. I don't know how many hours per day or week are 'normal' - depends on how much free time you have.

San.... the games I mentioned are not MMOs..... I consider the Diablo to be in a different category., so.... .... ... I don't know.....

So... to follow that up - will you be playing SWtOR? (aka Star Wars the Old Republic)?

I'm planning to, but I have to admit the way DA2 turned out has made me have a lot more doubts. I also played Age of Conan (AoC!) and loved the story for levels 1 through 20. Then you got to the rest of the game and it was... what's the point?

Bioware has always had great stories, even back when they were called Obsidian! I <3 Planescape: Torment. So it would be awesome if the new MMO was all great story telling but... I hope they just used the B team for the story on DA2 and the good writers are all on Star Wars :p

Also - in DA2 - why is Fenris such a douche? I mean... rivalry unless you try to blackmail Thrask about his daughter? WTF? How does that fit in with his personality other than fleshing him out as a douche?

Jeanette -
I'm trying to get into the Star Wars Old republic beta at the moment, so hopefully I'll be able to find out more soon. Bummed that I can't play as a Wookie though! ;)

As for DA2, I've got Fenris on 100% friendship (romance) without blackmailing anybody, and while supporting the mages. The trick is to be very careful when you take him with you, and when to leave him out of the party. Anything to do with mages, and he can't be in the party - everything else, let him tag along. Also, doing good stuff for elves, and killing slavers will give you friendship points. It's a lot of trial and error, and rather time consuming.
His personal quest is rather interesting though, and I think it's worth it. Explains why he's such a douche as well and why he hates mages so much.
Having him in a party with Merril is fun...she's trying to be all nice and 'we're both elves and we have something in common', and he keeps bitching at her. ;)

Only reason I put up with him is because I love his voice.:blush5:

Monster -
I'm not just into MMO's, I like all different kind of games. RPGs mainly, but I just have to have a look at a game and then decide if I like it or not. Only thing I don't like is platform games - I'm totally challenged when it comes to those for some reason.

Hehe. He does have a great voice! And yeah, I know it's possible to get max friendship with him (even as a mage!) It was just kind of bizarre to me that while he's generally predictable, he hated mages enough to want to blackmail the father of a dead one ;)

There are lots of times he stays home - although he does get friendship points if you take him when you get Merrill and talk down blood magic. He also likes it if you won't visit her :p

His comments on the Dalish being noticable for their air of condescension was pretty amusing as well.

I've applied for the SWtOR beta too! But so far nothing. They're supposed to release sometime between April and June... knock on wood :)
