G8r80's training / dieting / cycling / log

You've come a long way baby! Good job! How much rest are you taking on those? Manipulating the rest can make a big difference in stepping it up a notch and consistently coming in on 1:35 or faster in no time at all.

Thanks Johnny!

Thanks Sparrow! I don't rest per se. I don't do flip turns, but I turn around and do a small kickoff and continue. What do you suggest I do to be able to go 1:35 for longer?

do you usually swim straight through when you get in the pool or do you sometimes break it up into sets too? Its just like running. Having a recovery run or a tempo run done all at once has its place but the real power and speed in running comes when you start to break it up so each individual shorter run has more quality. then when you start puting it all back together again you have all the ingredients for a faster time. HIIT in the pool is very effective but for some, feels very unnatural!

Hi Jackie,

Yes, I did the Tri-shark triathlon last Saturday. Time was 1:35, about a minute faster than last year, but my swim was slower by 2 minutes and I felt I could have done 5+ minutes faster. I'll be faster on June 20 when I do the Rochesterfest Olympic length triathlon.

Sparrow, I have been thinking about my swim troubles and am looking to improve by:

1. Trying to simulate open water swimming by swimming without goggles and keeping my eyes closed except to sight,

2. Working on improving my kick to pick up a little speed without tiring my legs too much,

3. Doing shorter, faster intervals. I know I can go 2000+ yards continuously, so I want to improve my pull speed.

I am in Boise this week.

Pool:

200 yards kick (legs were toast)
1000 yards pull buoy
500 yards free, half with goggles and half without

30:00 on stationary bike.

Nice stuff g8 looks like you've been busy mate! Good stuff with the Triathalons etc. What events have you got planned for the near future?

Hey Tom, nice to hear from you! Next tri is an Olympic length on June 20.

Sparrow, I was disappointed in this time. I thought I would have shaved off 4 - 5 minutes off the swim and 4 - 5 minutes off the bike and 2 minutes off the run for a total of 10 minutes off my 2009 time. The only leg that I accomplished my goal was the run. Bike was 2 minutes faster, but the swim was 2 minutes slower. Ugh. I am trying to overcome my open water anxiety as that is costing me several minutes in each triathlon.

I am leaving Boise this morning, a few hours before the IM Boise 70.3 begins. The finish line is in downtown and I went by it yesterday. There is a lot of buzz. I will have to seriously consider dropping the Tri-Shark sprint the week before so I can do IM Boise. It looks cool! But, the swim is really, really cold.

Yeah, Jackie, 72:00 = 1:12 = one hour and 12 minutes. I was too tired afterward to convert the time to hours and minutes.

Ha, Jackie, you're funny!

6.13: busy with life
6.14: 5k run. Felt weak. Did a lot of manual labor earlier in the day and I think that took its toll.
6.15: 800m swim drills (breathing on left side - my weak side, kicking which is exceptionally tiring for me because my kick is so weak, and intervals), 1 hour on stationary bike. Did a lot of manual labor again and again felt weak.

Tom, I don't work as hard as I would like.

Did the Rochesterfest Olympic length triathlon today in Rochester, MN (71 miles south of Minneapolis/St. Paul) and home of the Mayo Clinic. Distances: swim: 1500m, bike: 40k (24.8 miles), run: 10k (6.2 miles). Total time: 3:19. Swim and run went well, but bike was slower than expected because of hilly terrain. I need to work on my hill riding.

Monday: 1 hour on stationary bike
Tuesday: 45:00 on stationary bike
Wednesday: 1000 yards swim drills (100 free, 100 kick, 300 pull, repeat)
Thursday: 1000 yards swim drills (100 free, 100 kick, 300 pull, repeat)
Friday: 1 hour on stationary bike
Saturday: 27 mile bike ride
