G8r80's training / dieting / cycling / log

Swim: 1.2 miles in 57:00. Took 3:00 rest stop after 700 and 1400 yards, so actual swim time was 51:00. I want to get that down to 40:00 before tri season starts up in June.

4.2 mile run in 37:00.

You don't f**k about do you G8 ;)

Good sh1t, wish i could keep up with as much cardio activity you do!

looks to me like you base run pace is improving too. Have you gained much weight in the off season? Be careful in the holidays, a good ironman time will be worth passing on a few deserts during one set of holidays.

in your corner

Thanks Todd. Yeah, I've plumped out to 203, about 15# above my ideal weight.

Today:

Gym: dumbbell bench press: 50# (each hand): 1x10, 65#: 1x10, 1x7
Bike: 18 miles (60:00)
Run: 8.5 miles (90:00)

Today: Swim: 2100 yards in 51:00, with 2 2-minute breaks. Without the breaks, this puts me a hair faster than my half iron time in April (48:00), (125th out of 130 - that was a fast swimming group). My goal for next years' halves (Boise and Racine) is to break 45:00, regardless of where that puts me in the pack.

Later:

Squats: 185# 6, 6, 4
pullups: 6, 6
Stationary bike: 40:00 hard effort, 151 ending heart rate
Run: 5.75 miles, 1:01. 10:46/mile. Very slow for me.

i was born in Boise.

Are you doing any swim drills? Go to my old log and check out some of the swim stuff. It may help to keep things interesting as you get deeper into your training.

another hint- start keeping a total tally of
Yards Swam
Miles Biked
Miles Ran

The days headed into my ironman, those numbers meant the world to me; i had paid the price.

You will be amazed at how large they get.

Thanks, Todd. Yes, I have kept a log on for the past year, except for a couple of months that I didn't log. (Which reminds me, I need to fill in those gaps).

I have done swim sprints in the past, but I want to work on my base for now and move into intervals later.

Totals for the last year (not including the non-reported days):

Running: 377.70 Miles. Struggled for 7 months with shin splints. This hurt me badly on the Gator Half.

Bike: 2442.5809 miles. I thought these numbers were higher

Swim: 61.5509 miles

I plan on increasing those numbers substantially over the next year in anticipation of a big tri year in 2010. And, yes, I am planning on doing the Boise Half on June 12. I will be there for a training class the week before and just stay an extra day.

By the way, here is a picture of Boise State University's "Smurf Turf". It is the only college with an artificial turf that is not green.

Yesterday: Recovery day from previous high volume workouts. Plus, I was so sore from the squats/running/cycling that I could barely walk.

Today: 2100 continuous yards in pool (Half iron swim distance, 1.2 miles) in 49:30 with zero rest stops. Heart rate and breathing were under control the whole time.

30 minutes on stationary bike

Yesterday: watched the Gators beat LSU at a sports bar. I had mixed emotions.

Today: Went mountain bike riding with my 59yo brother-in-law. He is a far better technical rider than me, but isn't as strong on the flats.

At one point, we stop to look at a map and a bunch of guys ask where we want to go to offer directions. They give us the directions to the North Abyss and South Abyss trails, both of which are black double diamond, the highest rating for trails. I tell them that I don't ride black trails - they are too difficult for me. One of the guys ask me if I ride the brakes down and suggests that I stay off the brakes. Another guy snickers "It looks like you use the left side of your body as a brake" as he looks at my left leg and elbow which were covered with dirt and sand from previous falls. I get a little feisty and say, yeah, I suck as a technical mtb rider but I don't have anything to prove to myself. I had open heart surgery last year and completed a half Ironman this year and am gonna do great at Ironman Florida next year. Besides, after working out 10 - 15 hours / week doing my triathlon training and weightlifting (oh by the way, I can bench 225# and deadlift 365#), I don't have enough time or energy to work on my technical mtb skills. So, that is why I don't do black trails.

One of the guys was intrigued with the surgery and had a lot of questions which I answered. The mouthy one then politely offered directions and we were on our way.

Testosterone .... gotta love it!

You don't have anything to prove to anyone. You are great!!!!!

I am glad that you atleast had mixed emotions about the LSU/FL game. :) I was pretty heartbroken for my sweetie but also preoccupied with the butt whuppin that the Dawgs got handed by "good Old Rocky Top". It is not UGA's year. Sigh.

Maybe you and your brother in law could learn from each other? What makes the technical easier for him? How could he build speed on the flats? Always good to have a training partner.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Mel, thanks!

I could become a better technical rider with more technical riding and Randy could become a better flats rider by more flats riding. It's really as simple as that. I'm gonna try to get more time in on the mountain bike.

Monday was travel day (Houston). Tuesday was hard work day.
Today: 90 minutes on stationary bike. Moderate pace: avg. heart rate=117

p..s. in my iornman year I spent alot of time on a mountain bike too, the leg angles are much different and I was taught that the sitting up more peddling will increase your drive when in aero.

I have clip peddles on my mountain bike too though, so I can push pull.

Are you doing any spin classes? When I was in the 112 portion of the 140.6, I did a few spin class routines to keep the ride "alive."

lol, I thought that story was funny. The guy didn't know who he was talking to.
We all have our baggage - I just happen to have a lot.

I think anything movement that works the biking leg muscles (spin class, mountain biking, road biking provides a benefit. When I ride my tri bike, my neck hurts from looking up. I do not have this problem on my road or mountain bike. The only way to alleviate this is by strengthening my neck muscles. Riding my tri bike more helps a lot, but I am going to look at some specific neck exercises as well.

I'm not doing spin classes now, but I will add them in.

Thursday: 1 hour on stationary bike, moderate pace
Friday: hard work day and flew back to Tampa
Today: 1.2 mile swim (52:00) and 1 hour on stationary bike

Hey a mate of mine who just came back from a holiday in the states has a picture with him on that turf! Small world indeed.

Interesting... Do you know why it is called "Smurf Turf"?

Sunday: Flew to Kansas City. 2.45 mile run in stiff wind and hills (yeah, there are hills in Missouri): 23:47. 1 hour on stationary bike.

This is the second time you flew to KC, and the second time, I could have met you in person. :(

Is there a way you can let me know the next time you are in KC? Its only 10 minutes from where I live.

E-Mail:

Keep moving forward Richard, much respect! :)

Don, I'll be in KC (near the airport) until Friday. I'll email you tonight.
