G8r80's training / dieting / cycling / log

The wife and I went to the beach yesterday, partly for recreation, but partly as an assessment. I have decided to do the Olympic length of the Pumpkinman Triathlon in October, but need a sprint tri tuneup before then.

There is a convenient sprint triathlon nearby, , on July 13 that is perfect timing. Unfortunately, because it is in July, the water temp will certainly be over 84F (29C) and not wetsuit legal, but the swim will be in the Gulf of Mexico. I wanted to see how bouyant I would be in salt water.

Despite the best efforts and advice of Sparrow, Flyinfree and my swim coach, my legs sink like a stone in fresh water without a wetsuit and it was just too darn hard for me to keep my body horizontal and I was completely unable to backfloat for a breather so I had to go continuously. With a wetsuit in fresh water or in salt water with or without a wetsuit, I am much more buoyant, swim horizonatlly (although a little more horizontally with a wetsuit than without) and I can float on my back to catch my breath without having to exert energy, something I cannot do in freshwater without a wetsuit.

I have also circled May 18 on my calendar as the first Sunday that I will be cleared to ride on the road again. There is a Sunday fast group that is fast (23 - 25mph for 20 - 30 miles) and I have never been able to go the distance with them because I got too winded. But I have a whole new cardiovascular system now (well, I have some new pieces) and if I can get my legs back to where they were (and I think I will), I think I'll be ready for them. I am going to put my time in on the stationary bike preparing for this.

It is really odd saying this, 22 days after open heart surgery, but I think I am clearly in better cardiovascular shape already than I was before the surgery. I still have limited ROM of my arms and my musculature is weak from not having worked out for almost two months. But, I am excited about the new me with new, working parts.

Today, I went to the gym and put in 80 hard minutes on the stationary bike. My legs felt a little dead today and my left achilles tendon felt a little tender, otherwise I would have done more. Heart rate stayed in the 130s to low 140s, which is not as high as two days ago because I think my legs are nowhere near their ideal condition.

Forgot to include 1/2 century ride with Flyinfree on May 10. Any whippersnapper in the Tampa area who wants to join us for the opportunity to smoke an aging, 48yo, overweight, out-of-condition, two-time cardiac patient who thinks he can buy speed with his fancy shmancy carbon fiber Orbea Onix bike is welcome to come and give it a go;-)

isn't it absolutely amazing how different salt is from fresh. I am sure glad I started in salt water, or I may not have stuck with swimming at all.

You do not have our ride on the 10th on your schedule :bncry:

Tha amzing thing about you is your elasticity and resilence. Sheeswh, if you were a hair gel, and I had hair, I would buy you. OK- that was weird.

Too many hours on the puter.

FF

I corrected myself - I added the May 10 ride.

And, I can hook you up with a wetsuit as long as you pinky promise me that you won't whiz in it! I know divers who will loan out their wives before loaning out their wetsuits for that reason!

I did a hard 35 minutes on the stationary bike, heart rate range: 138 - 151, avg: 144 and then 15 minutes on the elliptical, avg. hr: 145.

I am sooo ready for the open road it's killing me to stay indoors!

Wow, just think of how great thats going to feel when you're unleashed!!!

I hear you, Sparrow! I think my first open road ride will be May 10 with Todd. I've ridden with him many times so he can compare the pre-surgery me to the post-surgery me.

I didn't feel as hyped up today as I had the last few days so the intensity dropped off a little. I did 23 minutes on stationary bike at a hard level, hr: 140 - 145 and 1 hour on elliptical, hr: 135 - 139. My glutes are sore from that elliptical and my glutes are already strong from cycling.

Alas, I long for the day that I can do free weights and body weight exercises again.

I did 30 minutes on an exercise bike, avg. hr: 143 and 34 minutes on the Expresso.net bike, beating my ghost (pr) by :30. Then, did 10 minutes on the elliptical.

Am I the only one who finds these indoor cardio machines more boring than watching paint dry? I try to entertain myself, but it is difficult. On the road, I have no problems logging a 1/2 century or a metric century on a Saturday morning, but if I had to do 3 hours on a stationary bike, you'd have to hide all the sharp objects and remove my belt and shoestrings.

LMAO totally.

Do you listen to music at all while you are indoors? I turn my ipod up loud and enjoy the music while I run or bike inside. It still isn't as satisfying as getting outside, but it helps me enjoy the workout indoors.

You have some nice workouts so soon after surgery, really great job!

If I had to ride the spin-bike solo....it'd be pretty boring! I use great music and the hard visualization of burning fat off my body to inspire me, but other then that, it's pretty lame! I do the elliptical at my home solo, but I use a tv for distraction there too. There's very little that compares to being outdoors and riding "live"....:D

I've come to terms with my interest in spin-class....I like it because I can hit the pool afterwards and I also enjoy the social aspects of it as well. There's something about being a room full of woman that just works for me. If it were a room full of men, I doubt I'd be going nearly as much. I definitely have some weird issues with it, but I'll take inspiration wherever I can find it! :D

Glad to hear you're back at it already.....Rage against the machine bro! :)

Drex, yeah, I crank "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" (the best song ever made) as high as it goes on my Ipod, it's still a long, boring ride.

BSL, the stationary bikes and especially the expresso.net bikes have some decent electronics, unlike a spinning bike which has zero electronics. A spinning bike by yourself would be even worse...

Greg, I dunno, I'm thinkin' 50, maybe 62 (metric century). For most of the latter half of '07, I was riding 50 miles most Saturdays, so I'd like to get back to that and more as soon as possible if not sooner! The route is an up and back converted railroad trail, so I'll have to figure out on the outbound how far we want to go. FF and I rode this in February and I did 100 and he did 112 (the full ironman bike leg length). Sounds like your wife is starting to make some good decisions; I wish her well. You're making great gains on the bike.

Yesterday was a rest/beach day. Today, I did 60 minutes on the stationary bike (only 2 more long weeks before I'm on the road again), avg. hr: 142, and 30 minutes on an elliptical, avg. hr: 130. I just can't get the hr up as high on the elliptical because my glutes and lower back get tired and hold me back.

My wife's nephew received his Ph.D. in Coastal Engineering Saturday so we went to Gainesville for a surprise party. The wife and I took the kids on a tour of the University of Florida campus, where we both graduated (BS Zoology and BS Agriculture) and went into some research buildings. We wanted to show the kids the basement of Hume Library which was always dark, humid, moldy and creepy. Alas, they shut down that library and moved it in 1987. Also went by some of the places that the wife and I frequented as undergraduates and even the houses we lived in. I think the kids were fascinated about their parents' lives "back in the day". I think two of my kids will apply there and both have good shots of getting accepted, although it is a lot tougher to get accepted now than when I was a high school senior.

At the hotel, I managed to squeeze some stuff in; 40 minutes on the stationary bike yesterday and 45 minutes today. I didn't have much mojo on either day because I ate breakfast and then immediately worked out. Ideally, I like to wait at least 1 hour, preferably 2 hours after eating before working out. There was not a heart rate monitor present, but based on the SPI (sweat pool index), I'd give it a heart rate of about 135 - 140 on both days.

Tonight I went for my first run. I knew I would be off considering I haven't run in 10 weeks, but I didn't think I'd be this far off! I couldn't go more than 1/2 mile at a time without having to stop and catch my breath. My heart rate was definitely higher today (about 137) than in pre-surgery runs (128) and I could comfortably do a 9:30 pace (and slightly sub 9 if I pushed it), I was gassed tonight at a 11 - 12 min. pace. I finally slogged 2.8 miles in 35 minutes while walking about 1/4 of that.

I certainly hope for some fast improvement here.

Way to cheat death G8, keep up the good work!!! :D

BSL, I realize I snatched death from the Grim Reaper's grasp! Now I appreciate every day above the grass and don't get frazzled by little BS stuff anymore, which, by the way, would be a good policy for everyone!

barring a near-death experience, any advice on how to implement such a mellow policy? I seem to react to just about everything: blowing stuff off is just not something I've learned to do. I take everything personal and let small things get to me. Well, not all the time actually...but assume the worst and advise from there....:)

Here's something to think about...

I think you are 43, right? That means you are about 1/2 way to the grave, assuming you live to 86 which is about average. Of those 43 remaining years, say from 66 - 86, you will not be able to do the things you do right now. You'll be able to bike some and do some weights and golf, but not nearly to the level of effort you do right now. And, there is gonna be a dropoff in performance from ages 56 - 66. So, you really have about 13 years to kick @$$ on the mountain bike, pound weights and scream on the road! 13 years x 365 days = 4745 highly active lifestyle days left. Why waste any of them pissing and moaning about something trivial that you won't remember in 6 months?

I have five fewer years so I appreciate each remaining day even more.

I barely read the paper anymore as I don't want to get out of my Zen Zone by reading all negative crap the US and the world have to offer us. So, I ignore bad stuff and just focus on the good stuff.

Now, this isn't to say, "It's okay to neglect your business, let your house get foreclosed and your car repossessed"! No, do the stressful sh!t that you must, like run a business, but not any more than you must.

I run a business as well. I try very hard to not let my business stress me. Fortunately, my business is 14 years old (I founded it) and during the early formative years, it was very stressful, but I am reaping the rewards now by having created a well-oiled machine.

Of course, having a near death experience helps this learning process:D

I did a hard 34 minutes on the stationary bike, beating my previous best by another minute. Avg hr: 142. I was gonna run tonight but I chose to walk my obese border collie, so we walked 2.8 miles at a fast pace, avg hr: 106.

Beach day tomorrow. I'm gonna bring my wetsuit, mask and zoomers and see if my chest is up to open water swimming.

Dude...you sure you can be firing it up all that quickly? Seems like your hitting it pretty hard and so soon after your surgery....just concerned for ya...:)
