From alpha testing to the QUERCUS 200

Hi Quercus, You did not need to explain away how you feel towards family, & I don't see it as a pity party. It sounds like both you & your wife have done well, despite your families. There comes a time when the 2 of you need to put yourselves first and not worry about the others. You seem like a person who deserves the best in life. They are the ones missing out by not seeking your company. Families can be WEIRD! I love your expression "cabal of compadres". My younger sister & I have a great love of words & I'll use that one very soon. Cheers, Cate

Thanks Cory and Cate!

Cory, my parents know I will take care of them when the time comes and protect them from my sister to the best of my ability.

Cate, I'm pleased that you appreciate my phrasing. I don't get much opportunity to stretch my verbal legs in these here parts. ;) They are still my family and it is hard not to worry, but I certainly appreciate the kind words and sympathies.

I did my second round of PT exercises last night and I hurt today. It's mostly muscle soreness so that's not a bad thing. The trouble is that I forgot my keys this morning and with it my pill fob so I am without my nerve pain medication today. It's an hour round trip to the house and my wife has the car at her work and is out in the field today so I'm just going to have to do without.

It's still Friday and the river awaits me tomorrow morning! Happy Friday friends!

I had a great weekend! The cold river water was great on my back and I snorkled for hours each day. Just lazy floating and gently swimming watching the fish in the clear water.

I saw carp, bass, bream, a needle nose gar, some type of plecostomus (algae eater), and a juvenile Eastern River Cooter (water turtle). It was very peaceful and my back feels fine. I didn't count calories and swimming in cold water makes you hungry, but I am counting calories again and I am committed to getting the scale moving in the right direction.

Sounds like a great weekend.
I can't snorkel. The minute I try its like I forget how to breathe properly :-/

Committed, those scales will be moving in the right direction!

Nostalgic, you breathe as if you are meditating or doing an aquatic Darth Vader impression if you prefer. I feel like that is part of the reason it is such a calming activity. I should keep a snorkel at my desk.

I'm debating on whether or not I get on the scales for a while. It would be cool to do right for a while and then see a big drop. Just a thought.

That made me laugh. I had a picture of you sitting at your desk, with a snorkel on. Maybe you should take it with you to work as a reminder to chill. Just a thought. Cheers, Cate

What a lovely sounding weekend! I'm not much for water activities, so I've never been snorkeling, but your description makes me want to try. And I work in a busy office, so perhaps I should keep a snorkel at my desk, too. Might help keep the unwanted visitors away :)

So I bought a little above ground pool on clearance last night and set it up. It is just big enough to kick my legs in and it was very cold with water fresh from our well. I will be putting together lawn furniture tonight and the pool will be nice once that is finished. I am out in the field tomorrow and I have another project lined up after that. I have physical therapy today and Friday. My back is tight from putting up the pool and unpacking the lawn furniture. I had to load/unload the pool, drag my air compressor over for the top ring, spread a tarp and the pool out on the ground, intall the pump, and drag a large water hose from across the yard. That is a lot of lower back use for me.

I'm happy to feeling as well as I am.

I did well on food yesterday.

Laura, I've started reading the Intuitive Eating book that you had mentioned. It's my second attempt.

Cate, my desk is a menagerie of little things I've found in the field. Fossils, leaves, teeth, skulls, antlers, acorns, dried leaves, berries, and peppers. No one would bat an eye at the addition of a snorkel. The only down side is that they might expect me to use. "You went around the river? Don't you have a snorkel?"

Here is a shot of some of my desk collection. brass from .243 to 50 BMG and teeth from cow, coyote, and wild hog. The photo is an old coyote skull I found and my wife photographed. By old I mean it had missing and broken teeth that had bone growth over the root sockets and the molar cusps were worn down a lot. The sign is a burned sign that I found in the woods that says "DANGER EXPLOSION!".

Love it & love your sense of humour(Aus spelling) Quercus!
That's great about the pool & eating well yesterday. Cheers, Cate.

That sounds like a really nice and relaxing weekend . :)

I hope that the physical therapy goes well and that the back is fine after all that work with the pool.

Have a nice day and take care. :)

I was out in the field all day and it was 99 degrees F (37C) which is sadly not that hot for normal late August weather. I miss being cold. Cloudy are you in winter like Cate now or do you just live somewhere cold? When I lived in Seattle the Puget sound was too cold to swim in so I bought a wet suit. I love being in the water and I like natural water (fresh or salt) much more than a pool. I still love a pool.

I've been trying out the intuitive eating method from the name of that title so I won't be counting calories or weighing at least for a while. It's an interesting approach and I am going to make it work for me.

The 4wheeler was rough on the back, but I have been scheduled out tomorrow and Friday so hopefully my back is ready to stop taking it easy. I guess we will see. I am pleased to be out in the woods again.

We had a couple of weeks of great fall-like weather and now it's close to 90 and humid again... It's not 99 degrees but it's still hotter than I'd like!

How are you finding that intuitive eating book? I love the concept but the book itself didn't do much for me. I kept feeling like I had skipped a few chapters on accident. And who knows, I was reading it on a Kindle, maybe I did!

So far I'm really liking the concept and I'm tolerating the writing because of it. There is way too much anecdotal testimony in this book. I get a sense that they were padding it to make it a book of substantial length to be able to charge more. I feel that you have to glean the pertinent information from within the book. That may be too strongly critical of the book, but I have high standards for the quality of writing that I generally tolerate and I feel that I am making an exception because their concept is compelling.

I haven't finished it to know if I feel like I missed something crucial, but I've learned enough already to form my own hypothesis on the best way for me to proceed and I am in the adjustment phase of allowing myself to eat freely. So far I've eaten some "bad" foods, but I haven't gone crazy as I assumed I would. I have failed to make the consious considerations about hunger and reasoning behind my eating a couple times, but oitherwise I have been very open and honest to myself and I feel more positive about eating already.

I intend to write up a summary of the information I get from the book as a teaching process and reference. I'd be happy to share that with you if you are interested.

So I got cancelled for field work today and I'm glad. Two days in a row left me feeling pretty beat up. The back is tight and my whole body aches. Physical therapy is not going to be much fun this afternoon.

Enjoy your physical therapy.

Dieting is such an interesting intersection between human physiology and human psychology. It would be nice if the scientific knowledge on these fronts were further along than they are.

Hope PT was okay lovely xx
