Frank's Diary (aka The Last 50 is the Toughest)

Keep up the great work!
Thanks Frank, I am sure I have told you before but you know you were one of the first people to respond to me when I started. You sent me a link to your blog and it really helped me see what was possible. You were an early inspiration to me. Good to see you still posting!

I've run into a lot of people, as I'm sure you have, who attack weight loss as something they "have to get through"... so they lose great amounts of weight quickly, make a big show of it... and then fade from the scene suddenly when the weight starts flooding back. It took me a long time to understand that slow and steady really DOES win the race.

And if you want real inspiration? I've been doing this for three years? I just recently recorded another podcast episode for a member of the weight loss community, and she started her weight loss journey TEN years ago! Yeah, she lost the weight ten years ago, has kept it off and even today is still working on mindful eating and evolving her relationship with food. THAT'S what I call inspirational!!!

That does sound like something I´d love a link to! Still: inspiration comes in many forms and a lot of people would view someone who´s been doing this successfully for ten years as so far out of reach that they can´t connect to her. So you and Rob definitely count anyway :)

Thanks Frank, and to be honest your 3 years of success are more impressive to me than your weight loss total (which is quite impressive of course).

Been there done that several times. My challenge right now is to keep the weight from "flooding back", as it has too many times before.

I agree, that is an exceptional story, many years ahead of me for sure.

I'll be sure to post it when it drops!

And I know what you mean about how it seems so "beyond comprehension"...but three years ago, the idea that I'd have lost 175 lbs (I'm letting myself round down by a pound for the sake of this conversation LOL) and three years would have elicited a "yeah, right" from me too... so it's all "hard to believe"... until you start down the road and believe in yourself a day at a time.

Silly as it sounds, I can see myself still eating healthy in 2, 3 or 5 more years. I feel like I've unlocked some code that works for me. And if I can do it, anyone can. I really believe that.

I don't like that last sentence because it's only true if you're the weakest of the weak with the fewest health issues and other stressors, which you're definitely not. But at least more people can do it than believe they can up front.

You're right of course that I'm exaggerating in some ways... but what I'm trying to say is that it's never too late for anyone to accomplish something. We all have limitations.... I have 14 hours of severe migraine headaches every single day. But that's not part of my weight loss story. Certainly other people deal with other situations that are different, and in many cases I'm sure, much much worse.
We have to work with what we have and set goals that work in our world, you know?
However, just saying "well, I can't ever do that because..." shouldn't be enough for anyone. I think we see that in the people here in the forum more than in the population as a whole... since the people here are, by virtue of coming here, more optimistic, open and ready to make positive changes.
When the time is right for you, and something (weight loss or whatever the life goal is) becomes enough of a priority that it moves to the top of your list... you find a way. That's what I like to believe. I'd just rather have faith in hope than hopelessness.

By the way I almost just deleted the above after reading it back... speaking of my migraines, I just finished my nightly cluster headache so I'm deep into my painkillers and definitely at my least cogent. I just want to make sure you don't take it as a personal criticism in any way at all... I mean it completely as a compliment to the wonderful people here, yourself included. I just find people here to be so full of a spirit of trying to "find a way"... even ones with problems are looking for solutions, you know? I find that really encouraging about human nature in general.
I just want to make sure it comes off that way. Sorry if it didn't!

I didn't see anything offensive or unpleasant. :)
Life... finds a way... Except of course when it doesn't. For some people some goals are unattainable, no matter how hard they try. But in most cases you're 100% correct.

Hey all - sorry I haven’t checked in in a bit... chaotic here what with our son preparing to start his senior year of college. First the school was going to be open and he could live on campus, then they switched to distance learning and he and his roommates decided they’d like to get an off campus apartment and live together for the semester (rather than be stuck here with boring old mom and dad lol). But that’s the short version! Lots of other issues in between, many still on going. Ugh.

I did want to stop by to update my status in one regard. As many of you know, I very much want to share what I’ve learned so far on my journey and try to help others. I’ve been writing, doing interviews, etc. Soon I’d like to add public speaking. But one thing I thought would help me... on several levels... was some professional training/certification. So I just signed up to begin the Precision Nutrition certification program. Hopefully by end of the year I can have that done. I’d like to better understand the nutritional science behind the experiential lessons I’ve learned, and widen my knowledge base.
I’m hopeful having a certification will open some doors, but also personally unlock some new avenues to sharpen my own personal weight loss journey.
I‘m really excited about it.
I thought about it for a while and then I compared it to starting my weight loss journey itself - sometimes if you think something is a good idea you have to go ahead and just take that first step and see what happens. It’s the only way to get things rolling!

Sounds like an exciting new adventure! Nutrition is super interesting and sadly there are a lot of charlatans out there.

Hey Frank, good to hear from you. That does sound interesting. We all have opinions on nutrition and what people should eat. Unfortunately most of us have little real expertise to base those opinions on.

Good luck on the public speaking thing, listening to you in your podcasts I suspect you are a good public speaker.
