Frank's Diary (aka The Last 50 is the Toughest)

By the way all, I just posted a new recipe on my blog... for those interested in an easy, tasty, low-cal side dish that takes advantage of a "super food"... we've really been enjoying this Roasted Turmeric Cauliflower that I came up with. Like I said, it's super easy and works really well with any basic protein. If you try it, please let me know what you thought. Let me know via a message here or leave feedback on the blog.

I´m not a big fan of turmeric but in a spice mix I can see it work well and I do happen to have half a head of cauliflower left over... Think I´ll be trying it on Saturday.

I really hope you enjoy it!

I was never a fan of how Turmeric turned everything orange LOL but that doesn't happen when it's just part of a spice mix.. As the recipe says though, you'll have more mix than you need potentially, depending on the size of your cauliflower. So that's the only thing to watch for. I'm hopeful that the photos will help you achieve the spice level that I consider "average" for the recipe. If you chose to make it again and want more or less then you'll have a baseline.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe! Scary times, to be sure. Only way we'll get through it is the only way we ever accomplish anything truly big and great - together! Hang in there!

:iagree: Kindness to those around us by being careful & helping out when we can will be even more important than ever.

Vegan Microwave Cake

Hey all! Hope everyone is hanging in there! Wanted to share this... I've been playing around with the above recipe over the past week and I think now it's to the point where people might really enjoy it, both as a way to get a chocolate fix (at just 270 calories) in these stressful times AND as a fun activity that you can do with your kids ... or even have your kids do pretty much all by themselves.

I tried to make this work with stuff everyone should have already in stock at home... no trips to the store necessary. And it's the kind of recipe that is very kind to making variations on your own. Anyway, just offering it up as something that might put a smile on someone's face!

And if you do try it and especially if you vary it in any way... please leave a comment on my blog about it, so others can see some other options as what they might try. Everyone is looking for distractions so I figure the more we can provide for each other, the better.

Stay safe!!!!

Frank

By the way, a few personal updates.... I know they seem kind of small (no pun intended) with all else going on, but again... distractions are good.

Last week I got a new pair of jeans... size 38. They replaced the size 42's I was wearing. I started this journey off wearing size 56. I haven't been a size 38 since... I don't recall when. Now, when I wore them that first day I had to jump off a tall building to get in them, but that still counts, right? They're loosening up a bit more now. Also because....

I'm in another weight loss "pocket" this past few weeks. BNW (bare naked weight) has dropped from 236 to 227 as of this morning. My home scale is at least a pound heavier than the doctor scale so, that's exciting. Dressed I'm weighing in at like 232 right now, meaning I'm getting ever-so close to 170 pounds lost. The first time I see 229 dressed will be nice to see. Hopefully this streak of weight loss will continue, but my history the last year has been that I lose weight in fits and starts, meaning that I'll lose weight for a few weeks and then nothing for a few months. It's weird, but just how it seems to go for me.

Anyway, that's all!

Congrats! I know that feels good. I am still in my 40s, but they are Levis 501 shrink to fit, a little smaller for the size. Hope to be in 38s in the near future.

And congrats for the weight loss streak!

Hey all - just thought I’d check in again. Still safe and sound in captivity here... eating healthy despite the world seeming to give itself a pass on doing so. LOL. I’ve been finding myself toying with a lot of new recipes. Especially cookies. I believe I’ve nailed a no-sugar added cookie... although what’s funny is that I got the calories so low, that I then topped it with melted semi-sweet chocolate and butterscotch morsels to make it a kind of a lower calorie but decadent treat. Not sure if that combination makes sense to anyone else... but in my quarantine brain it does.
I haven’t posted a recipe yet because typically I’ll make something 4-5 times first to make certain I’m happy with it... so I’ve got a few times to go. But me, the wife and our college age son gobble these up. And they’re just 114 calories apiece. Lemme know if anyone wants a recipe while you’re stuck in and I’ll send it along since I might not blog it for a while.
Here’s a pic!
Stay safe and well!

Hey all.. I normally ONLY record official weight when taken at a doctor‘s office, but considering that who knows how long it’ll be before that happens again, I decided to go with the home scale so I could chart something. Glad I did! Today I hit 228, officially cracking the 170 pounds lost mark!
I started at 400 lbs pretty much exactly three years ago, and I’m living proof that you don’t need to make yourself miserable with some deprivation-based diet that will likely just yield temporary loss followed by regained weight.
If you get on board with making healthy changes you can live with, learn to enjoy food and eat happy every day... you might not lose weight at an amazingly quick pace, but it will be steady and constant. Even three years in I’m looking forward to seeing how far this goes as I hopefully get towards 200 lbs.
Losing 1/2 my body weight after age 50 is not something I ever thought as more then a silly dream when this started, but I’m here to tell you that it‘s there for the taking if you want it. Start today!
Oh and PS if I can offer any assistance on your journey? Advice? Support? Motivation? Please just ask. Very happy to help!!!!!

What an achievement, Frank. Congratulations & thank you for being such a good example for anyone starting out thinking that it's too hard, & they can't succeed.

What I tried to say, but better expressed!

Aww you all said it great, thanks. But honestly I’m less interested in “hey look at me, aren’t I impressive?” than the “hey, look at me... if I can do it YOU can do it!” part of this.

I wish the May 2017 version of me could see me now. It certainly would have made the starting few weeks and months, which are really the crucial part of the whole thing... SOOOO much easier. I mean, everyone loses a bunch of weight no matter what awful system of weight loss they try when they start, it’s only the ones that have something built well that are prepared to break through that first wall, and second wall, etc.
I think because after numerous failed attempts doing this wrong, I finally figured out how to do it right. And I’d love to help as many people be able to figure out how to do it for themselves. Because EXACTLY the way I did it works JUST for me... but the methods and tools I used, are the same ones that everyone can use to build their own system that should work for them.
And it’s sure easy to say that with confidence three years later and 170 lbs down. LOL
So please, if anyone needs any one-on-one help or has any questions they don’t want to ask in a thread? Don’t be shy. I’d love to help. NOT sharing the info makes me feel selfish. I feel like paying it forward is what I’m supposed to do in the next phase of all this.

I love all of the above. Congratulations on an awesome achievement and thank you for sharing what you´ve learned along the way!

My wife and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary today... and as part of our celebration this weekend for the first time since quarantine started, yesterday we ventured out for lunch at a recently reopened restaurant! It was wonderful to get out again, and the restaurant handled everything so well, our plan will be to make weekly visits going forward... as long as (fingers crossed) people are otherwise smart and keep things contained.
Hope everyone is safe out there and things are improving where you are!
Frank
