Drex Gets Focused: An Essay on Shenanigans

eeeeeew U R so gross!!! hahahaah just kiddin! those look tuff man. I see lots of those.

maybe the calf problem after long distances is due to not enough recovery. During this run down time, after having a couple of weeks recoup, try a long run- 20 miles. And let's see if deep rcovery my be the culpret.

so Drex-= do you ever feel like you want to pop one of those?

They actually are pretty gross. As far as popping them, that really hasn't crossed my mind. One of the girls on the volleyball team was saying she wanted press on them though. I really don't notice them much. I don't spend much time looking at my calves. :)

As far as recovery that very well could be. I wasn't sure if it would still even be an issue by next spring when I hit up the marathon training again. I would be up for trying out a 20 mile run here in a little while, maybe sometime in Novemeber?

Varicose veins are generally genetic. You can have them surgically removed if they bother you aesthetically, but they are generlly not a medical issue.

Todd, I think I will register for St. Anthony's. Yes, it is a madhouse - 4000+ participants in the ocean, so that would be truly chaotic. But, I am going to practice ocean swimming and I would like to think that can become a somewhat competitive ocean swimmer some day.

Sooo, I woke up at quarter after noon today. Race started at 7:45, course closed at 11:45.

Since I wasn't gonna run the actual course, couldn't be bothered going down there, instead trotted up to the uni to warm up, and ran from there back down to the Bow River trail, which I then followed a ways past Eau Claire and back for a little over 13 miles.

13.43 miles in 121.5 minutes @ 9:03 mm.

Not fantastic, but a pretty good improvement over the last (no vomiting at all!), especially considering I weighed in this morning at 215 lbs. :sad2: Too much pizza and ice cream, I think.

Thanks for the luck, guys. :) Drex, do you ever think about killing it with fire? As g8r says, I dun really think those have anything to do with what you've been talking about. They just make it look like you're about to do a Resident Evil.

Yeah, the route is really nice, FF. I walked it once and then ran it on my last long training run. Would've been fun to do it with people around (actually a couple of friends were there today to show support, too, and consequently are now somewhat mad at me I assume, I dunno yet  ).

p.s.s. a note for you as you advance. Get into some larger events before august of next year. BIG events, like 5 and 10K that will have many thousands fo participiants. Otherwise when you enter that "M-Dot" environment the magnitude of energy, the volume of the announcer, the intensity of the athletes, and all that will overwhelm you. I do not say this to offend your superior level of being, but to coach you in mental and emotional preperation for "M-Dot." It is BIG. I had no clue.

Oh, definitely. Just so you know, I'm aware that jumping into an Ironman without even knowing what the eff I'm doing and being as out of shape as I am is completely retarded. Fully aware. ;)

Gonna get a few races under my belt before then, for sure. And a whole lot of practice "mini" tris (which I've decided I'll be doing once a week after a bit) and a couple long ones (both on my own I mean). And a few olympic length tris (actual races) if I can just for practice transitioning (and as you say to get used to the whole deal), which I'll also get some of on my own. I will find some big events and sign up for them. Thanks. <3

First thing to do, though, is lose this extra fat weight, and maybe even some of the lean mass. Those of you who've been paying attention will recall that I do not want to be above a certain size, and actually while I was running earlier I figured out what I'mma do. Not gonna lay it out this time, just gonna do it. Main thing is to tighten up my diet, I think. Not in the normal healthy way but in the crazy person amino debt way. XD

Are joo talking to me? If yes, and talking about the crazy person thing, I mean I'm gonna stop eating so much protein for a while (drop down to 150-175g per day rather than 300 (and less of other stuff, too, obviously), in the hopes that I stop synthesizing muscle, because my body apparently doesn't understand the concept of "deficit". With proper meal timing, it sheds fat and builds muscle at the same time. This would be lovely for most people, but is not what I want. I only want the fat gone, for the time being. Don't want to carry all this extra bulk around when it's not necessary (I have a loong way to go neuromuscular-wise before I should need to increase mass to gain strength, which leads me to believe I'm making nonfunctional adaptations :bncry:).

Tough break oversleeping on race day, Focus. What happened? At least you got to run the course, but it certainly would have been cooler to run it with a few hundred other struggling souls.

Oh, as I explained, I had to go party with my friend. I hadn't seen her in years, and that was more important to me than being rested/awake for the race. Turns out I got in at 5 and actually got all ready to go and everything by 6, and then zonked out until after noon. :p As I keep saying, I'm not an endurance athlete (in terms of priorities, I mean), but I shall endeavour to be more serious now, for to not drowning during the Ironman.

I'll run another couple half-thons over the next few months, even if I have to go out of country to do it, as I'll need the practice I'm sure. Hmm... maybe I can find.. ohh, when I was looking at the harvest, there's another one called Last Chance or something end of Oct, here. Perhaps I'll do that.

haahahahaaah you are not an athlete, you are a carnival ride!

all you need is a nice whitetrashy bleach blond to run you! Then you would be an attraction!

:rofl:FF:rofl:

Some call me the Rollercoaster of Love. 'Sup. Anyway, I'll show you, ****er. :boxing_smiley: :action8:

Maybe it would help if I did one of those montage videos. Y'know, go run up those stairs and beat up on dead cows and whatnot.

Training

1 Man Half-Marathon :p

Biked 13.0 miles in 60.0 minutes @ 13.0 mph.

Thoughts

I think walking this 10 minute ~37% incline twice a day (the first third of the way there) is finally manifesting the long-awaited "shin splints". The walk to the gym is now the mentally toughest part of my training , with my shins and calves screaming at me to stop until well after I arrive at the gym and give them some time to get over it.

Bike was at 50% MHR, so, super easy pace. I think what I'll do is keep it thereabouts and aim training at doubling speed and duration at the same level of exertion. For the meantime, anyway, as it also serves the function of easy mode weight loss.

Also I has a story, the results of which I will share tomorrow! :D

I can't wait to read about the day Focus oversleeps for his ironman. Yer somethin else focus. lol

Drex-HIGHLY impressed at that marathon. Some of those pics look downright painful. You fought the good fight! Good job and hard training!

Sheesh. Your half time for a marathon was pretty much what my half time is in a half marathon race! Great job again! Whats qualifying for Boston?

Hey now. I won't sleep through that one. No power in the 'verse will stop me from meeting FF and smacking him right in his face. ;)

Uh, yeah. What she said. I just realized the only encouragement I offered was to imply that your leg makes you look like a candidate for zombiedom.

It just occurred to me that it's sort of embarrassing for me to be sleeping through races when I'm sharing a journal with The Mighty Drexatron. Guess I better work on that. :D

I like the pics. She's right - it's pretty obvious that you're working hard, in all of them. 'Nuff said, I think.

Edit: Also, that time puts you 30 mins away from qualifying for Boston, I think, though I do recall you saying you're not interested in running it anytime soon.

Insomnia - Check, Stress - Still don't know how??

So my "not sleeping plan" - as recommended by mreik! - is going great.

Got pretty bored around 5am (two hours ago), though, so I made myself a personal training website and did up a few pages, one of which contains a pretty spiffy RMR and BMR calculator. Most sophisticated around, as far as I can tell. It's essentially a highly tweaked rip-off of the one on Berardi's site. Minus all the embeddedwhoringscript, of course. But hey, it's not as if a simple form calculator can be all that different from the other ~300 on the web. Mine just uses the best formulas, averaged out, allowing you to either input info if you know it, or just get your RMR and adjust it yourself. It also explains the necessity of this (repeatedly, for the dumbasses among us - you know who you are!).

Gonna put some Google advertising or something in there before I put it up and link to it in the 'fat loss simplified' guide I'm writing up to replace DW's which I assume she had removed (because it's missing) for the weight loss subforum, because, uh, I'd rather not be paying for 10'ish thousand times 3-4 posts per day. Especially since I "had to" force it not to cache (for nerdpuritanical reasons :p).

... In case any of you hadn't figured it out yet, I clearly have way too much time on my hands. :sad2:

hahahaha my lovely lady just said- "uh oh, somebody doesn't knwo who they are dealing"

August baby!

:sport:FF:sport:

The sparrow's mockery fills me with the fire of a thousand suns! Can you feel the heat!? :SaiyanSmilie_anim: :p

... Actually that might be the aspirin. You'll probably be glad to know I've decided to stop taking it, having concluded it isn't really essential to the stack.

When I went to see a doctor a few months ago when I had the leg issues, he commented about the veins and asked if it was worse in that leg. He referred to them as useless veins. My thought, and I don't know all that much about human anatomy or the functions of all the parts, is that possibly lactic acid isn't getting cleared from the calf as efficiently as other parts due to fewer functional veins. Not that something like this should keep me from improving, it would just be a little slower to advance. It probably has nothing to do with this anyway, I just try to look at it from as many angles as I can to see if there is anything I can do to improve.

Honestly, I'm a little dissappointed. I would think you would be too. Hopefully you can get into the race in October. That seems like it is a better timeframe for you to get ready for the event. With the running you have been doing you should easily be able to get ready for that one. Although, this is only if you have an interest in running/triathlon.

Thanks much Sparrow! The last few miles were very painful. :) Boston qualifying time for my age is 3:10. So, as Focus said, I am 30 minutes off that time. Qualifying time for my dad is 3:45, so he just missed it, although he has qualified for Boston a few times when he was younger.

Edit: Also, that time puts you 30 mins away from qualifying for Boston, I think, though I do recall you saying you're not interested in running it anytime soon.

I would love to qualify for Boston, whether I actually go or not. The reality though is that I am not anywhere near that level right now. It may be a goal for me in 2010 when I go back to do Grandma's Marathon again, depending on how far along I have come.

FOCUS, you are simply a very different person. I don't know what else to say except you entertain me at times (and thoroughly piss me off because we don't get to see you know who in a bikini).

I don't, really. I mostly dislike it intensely, to be perfectly honest. But I am very interested in completeness of training, so. The only reason I took such an early event for the half-thon in the first place was because I gave JoveGirl the choice and she decided to take the heavy handicap. :p Since she herself "wussed out" ;), I'm not feeling particularly like a bad person.

I will sign up for the Last Chance and hopefully you guys won't think I'm such a bum afterwards? Haha. :D Once again, to be perfectly honest, I'm almost entirely internally motivated, so for me running the thing by myself was pretty much the same as doing the event, but I see that you all attach some sort of ritualistic importance to running in the presence of other humans, so I'll see what I can do to accommodate your fetish. :costumed:

Kinda wondering now where you were 2 years ago, in terms of miles per minute and distances on foot. Indulge me? :)

Thanks, Greg. I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm beginning to understand that for most people in most situations, the feeling is mutual.

Also, you do too. Just later. Anyway, aren't you married? ;)

Oh, and if you were super attentive and stalkerish like the F man, you might already have seen something along those lines. <--- That would be a huge hint!
