Dog Walkers Club

I added another 2.0 miles
new total of 14.4 miles

Got home and took Finnegan for a long walk on a new route. After I got home I hopped in the car to measure it and its 2.0 miles exactly!

Well, I didn't get a walk in this morning. I finally broke down and went to the doctor on Friday since I was sick for over a week. The antibiotics (Cipro) are giving me insomnia and I slept until 10:30 this morning (I'm supposed to be at work by 10!). Hopefully I can get some sleep in tonight so that we can go out tomorrow morning. Being sick is the pits!

I'm finally mended but the antibiotics make me sooo sensitive to the sun! Arg! I wore a hat yesterday while walking but my face still got red and splotchy. I'm going to have really coat myself in sunscreen for the rest of the week - even at 7 in the morning!

So, I thought I would start using a score sheet so that I can keep track better:

Week of 4/28/08- 5/4/08

MON: 0
TUES: 1
WED: 0
THURS:
FRI:
SAT:
SUN:

Not looking good so far, but I hope to improve. And why don't regular bbcodes work here? Hmm...I'll have to look into that.

I'm fair skinned and sensitive to the sun too, tho I must admit I usually dont wear sunscreen for my morning or late evening walks.

Are you tracking how many walks you take? or the distance?
And I'm not sure what bbcodes are.

I took Finnegan to the vet yest for a reg exam and kennel cough and picked up some frontline and heartworm prevent- wow $214 later . . . I really hope to save up some money and get the yard partially fenced in for him. Then maybe I can talk hubby into gettin Finnegan a little friend to play with!

BBcodes are what make the text appear the way you want - like html codes but simplified. Most boards support them, but some of the features don't seem to work here. I was going to make a table, but couldn't!

I'm keeping track of miles (yeah, so that's one mile so far this week :boxing:). I've been so off this week it's been crazy. Kali has recovered from her toe injury and is going NUTS since she hasn't had a good long walk. I just can't seem to get back on a good schedule with trying to catch up at work and at home and taking a medicine that messes with my sleep. ARG! But I'm not giving up on my exercise routine- I promise I will get back to it as soon as is possible!

By the way, it's really helping me having this thread to post in. It's a reminder that other people "know" that I should be exercising and it helps me to be more accountable (like the whirling dervish of a dog hasn't informed me that I haven't been going on enough walks lately!).

Aren't vets so much fun? Lat month, we ended up spending $1100 on the animals (Kali had an obstructed bowel that cleared on its own thank goodness, and one of my chickens had egg yolk peritonitis and had to be put to sleep :( ). I thought I was going to faint. This month, we've only spent $70 at the vet so far :p!

yeah, so that's one mile so far this week

Make sure you add this mile and other ones to the ongoing tally. I took Finnegan and my 2 kids for a 45 min, 2 mile walk after work, so here is the updated info:

I added another 2.0 miles
new total of 16.4 miles

Sounds like you have quite a few animals- how many and what sortS?

Wow this seems like a cool club!

Unfortunately my animals aren't good walkers:

and then I have 3 cats..none of which want to run beside me on a leash! Well, I never tried, but something tells me that they will hate it.

Hmmm...maybe the tortoise can be left at home, but those other guys need some walks - at least short ones! I've got a part corgi who has teeny little legs and she needs about 3 miles a day before she is satisfied! My fiance won't let me put any clothes on her though :p. I just love frenchies!

Make sure you add this mile and other ones to the ongoing tally.
Ok, so I should add my total to the whole club total - I wasn't sure if that was just yours or everyone's (which is just the two of us committed right now!). Maybe it would be easier to update at the end of the week (on Sunday?). Or a running tally is good too - easier to keep track of probably!

So including my walk on Tuesday, that's a
new total of 17.4 miles!

Ok, let's get the ball rolling! Anyone else want to join? We aren't even half way to Philadelphia! Who's going to help us?!?

Sounds like you have quite a few animals- how many and what sorts?

We have the one dog (Kali) and a cat that is also on a weight loss plan (Delilah - small framed cat that weighs 17 pounds) as well as 21 chickens and two bee hives. We are prepared for 2 dairy goats and 2 sheep probably this fall. My fiance is trying to convince me that we *need* a miniature horse, but I'm not there yet!

Oh yea, they do go on walks but they generally can last perhaps a quarter of a mile before they zonk out and mom has the carry her 57lb basset baby home. She just wants me to work those arms too lol Michelangelo normally has to be carried home too, while he's a trooper, he pretty much runs in place because pixie walks slower and next thing ya know he's laying on his belly panting up a storm. Then mom has to save the day again and get doggie drool down her back ^.^

Lol, yea my boyfriend gets mad when I put clothes on the pets too, they have a boutique in my town and when I drag my boyfriend there, I get to here a series of NO for every cute little shirt I choose. I had to buy mikey the PJs behind my boyfriends back lol

Here's my guy, Chulo. He's rarely on my good side but he's cute as hell nonetheless. He gets walked at least once a day for at least 20 minutes. Usually between 30 and 40.

For those of you walking your dogs along road ways and wanting to get an idea of how far you've gone, I recommend using Google Maps. Save time and gas!

  • Go to Google Maps and input and search your address. eg. 100 Richmond Street London ON
  • Click "From here" in the "Get Directions" part of the white window.
  • Input another nearby address (or street name) eg. Queens Ave. London ON
  • Click on the blue path to create a destination point and drag it to another road to create a new path.
  • Drag the destination marker (from step 2) over and on top of your own address marker.
  • Move/create new destination points to re-create the route you followed.
  • Check left side of screen to view distance travelled.

Hope that makes sense. It's easier than I believe I made it look. I use it every time I take a new route.

h34vyK1tt13 and the darwinfish- your canine kiddies (and tortie too) are cute!
I never thought to use googlemaps, but last week I walked a route then hopped in the car to get the mileage- a healthy 2 miles!

Chesapeake (BAY RETRIEVER) City Maryland, to
Boston (TERRIER) Massachusettes. A total distance of 381 miles
-@58 miles to Philadelphia, Pa
-@another 93 miles to NY City, NY
-@another 118 miles to Hartford, CT
-@another 101 to our final destination of BOSTON, MA

As of 4/30/08
new total of 17.4 miles!

every step counts, we need about another 10miles to be half way to Philly

Took Finnegan on our new 2 mile route today, but changed it up a bit. Every other block we ran, and then alternated a brisk walk in there. We both did well I think! He's pretty tuckered out now lol.

As of 05/02/08
new total of 19.4 miles!

Ok, finally checking back in. Been a busy few days!

Chulo is sooo cute - how old is he? Still looks like a pup.

Here's my final tally for last week:

MON:-----0
TUES:----1
WED:-----0
THURS:---2

I already added the first mile, so just four more for the goal -
new total of 23.4 miles!

This week, I've already missed today :(. My fiance's folks are in town and we had a big dinner party last night and not only did I wake up late, but it's raining! I seem to have an endless supply of excuses for the past few weeks! :p

Miles for week of 5/5/08- 5/11/08
MON:-----0
TUES:----
WED:-----
THURS:---
FRI:------
SAT:-----
SUN:-----

Let's see if I can get in more than 5 (I seriously used to stick to my 15 miles a week religiously until I was sick a few weeks ago! Arg!!!)

Thanks! He'd be a great dog for a single guy. The ladies go nuts over him whenever I take him out. He was a pup when those photos were taken. I think he was maybe a month or so old... 2 at the most. He's now pushing 5 months. Still cute as hell, though. :D I'll post up some newer photos later.

I'd love to join the group! I walk my 7 year old Shep/Husky mix (Sasha) for long periods of time every day (usually).

Joey :waving:

Oh Joey, Sasha has that "I'm so happy because I've just torn up a toy" look on her face that my Kali gets! There are always stuffed animal guts around our house!

The pic of the bulldog in p.j's is hilarious!
I just wanted to say hi, as we're kinda neighbors. I'm in VA too!

I just got a dog in December and we like to go hiking up on the ridge behind the house. It's not exactly "dog-walking" but I do put him on the leash every now and then, just to keep him in training for how to properly walk on a leash.
