Chesapeake (BAY RETRIEVER) City Maryland

Well I know our fearless leader has walked 2.6 miles, and I walked one with my dogs right a bit ago. So I think I'll start us off here on our walking from Chesapeake Bay Retriever. :D

New Total: 3.6 Miles

Welcome, Tarrish!
Your pups are adorable!

I started this thread a while ago, but just this week found the time to
actually have a plan/formula for it. I love my dog and he has so much
energy and it's important to me to give him what he needs. I got the
love, food and shelter down pat- just need to work on more exercise
for him.

My post for advise treat:
Always make the dog sit before putting on the leash to go out.

I have a seperate collar/leash just for walking and when I ask Finnegan if he wants to go for a walk, he runs to the door and paces till I grab the collar/leash and tell him to sit while I put it on. Then he is not to get out of the sit position until I say "OK". He is pretty good at this, but I continue to reinforce it.

Sunday: N/A Monday: N/A Tuesday: N/A Wednesday: 1 Mile Thursday: N/A Friday: N/A Saturday: 1 Mile
1-on-1 time with dog- 15 minutes with each dog playing fetch. My dogs love their toys! lol
Advise/Tip shared- My advise for this week is do not over treat your pets! Dog treats are a great way to reward your dog or even great for training, but when you give to many treats per day or week you can cause your dog to become over weight. Nobody loves more to make their dogs happy, but much like my grandmother found out it can cause your dog to put on a large amount of weight. Just like a human this is not good for your pet. Limit those treats so they remain treats! :D

Total treats = 4 Treats

I never thought of forming a dog walking club. That's a great idea. Where I live we have the perfect place down by the waterfront. Many people do walk their dogs there, but it would be a lot of fun to do it together.
Thanks for the great idea.

I'm in.

My name is Jacqui and I have a border collie/smooth collie/mutt mix. She's a 5 year old pound puppy, and loves to go for walks. :D I need to take her out more than she's been getting, so this is a great club for me to join.

Welcome aboard! Be sure to review the group challenge of walking form Chesapake City to Boston. I look forward to "walking" with you.

So, how's it going? My dog walking has been going moderately well. I get home from work so late though. The walks aren't that long, and it gets dark so fast now.

We should recruit more people so we can start our challenges off better. :D

I'm hoping to get back on track ASAP.
I just lost my Dad to cancer on 11/24/07 (only 5 weeks after
being diagnosed). Life is a roller coaster atm, but hope to
return to some routine soon.

Aw. : / I'm really sorry to hear that. I know what it's like to lose your father. I've lost mine as well. My thoughts are with you, and I hope you're doing alright.

Yarmiah - thanks for starting this club! I'm really sorry to hear about your father. My grandmother is having a biopsy tomorrow and I'm sure that her tumors are cancer. I'm just hoping that she's going to live a couple months, but at 87 years old I don't think she's going to be able to fight this. I'm trying to combat my anxiety about it with exercise rather than eating.

This is my first post on this forum so I don't have the skills to put up a picture of my pups yet, but I'll try to figure it out.

I have two dogs - a black lab and a cream goldendoodle. They are a handful. The Goldendoodle is under 2 years old so he still has the puppy energy that leads him right into trouble if he's not walked. We adopted him from a rescue group less than a month ago so we're in the midst of re-training him how to behave like a proper well mannered citizen. Our lad is 5 1/2 years old so she's super mellow.

I'm committed to walking them each morning and hopefully walking my husband at the same time - he need the exercise too.

My realistic guess is to start walking again in earnest once I'm thru the holidays. Still dealing with Mom's issues (diabetes and alcoholism) and her being so far away in addition to her grieving for Dad. That coupled with the time constraints for shopping, wrapping, baking, etc leaves little for walking on a regular routine.

I DID however, buy a new walking leash that has the center "of gravity" at the dogs chest so if he tried to pull, it will cause him to turn back towards me- I can't wait to try it out!

SoCal- I'd love to see a picture of your pups!

I think I'm going to join this club, because my golden retriever Bella is only 8 months old and needs a *lot* of exercise to keep her from destroying stuff. :D

Here's my baby!

Ok folks. First full week of January is upon us! Let get this walking in gear!!

Chesapeake (BAY RETRIEVER) City Maryland, to
Boston (TERRIER) Massachusettes. A total distance of 381 miles
-@58 miles to Philadelphia, Pa
-@another 93 miles to NY City, NY
-@another 118 miles to Hartford, CT
-@another 101 to our final destination of BOSTON, MA!

My back has been bothering me, so instead of getting on the Nordik Track, I have had to walk to get my exercise in. It was warm and dry enough to take the dog out today! I tried out the new harnass and he was kinda confused by it, but it is helping. He still pulls some, but its not as hard on me when he does as the center of gravity is now at his chest, instead of his collar.

At last post of 11/11/07- we had walked a total of 7.2 miles.
Today I added 1.3 miles
new total of 8.5 miles

Yarmiah, I just adopted an Australian shepherd also! He JUST turned 1 year old and he's still very puppyish. He has the same problem with pulling but he's gotten a bit better since I got him 2 weeks ago. I keep the lead very short so he must walk close no matter what and I try to keep him exactly next to me, when the lead becomes taught I give it a swift yank and release and this stop him. He still pulls toward people and ESPECIALLY dogs, but I think this is a common problem for Aussies. We are going to try obedience school for this and also, when I leave for work and send him to his kennel he whales! I don't know if this is separation anxiety or what, he is somewhat of a 'velcro aussie'.

Gratz on your Aussie!

Our Finnegan is a joy . . an energic joy for sure, but we love him tons!
He is always very happy to meet other people and other dogs, which is the root of the pulling issue. This harness is promising, and I also have used a prong collar to help.

As you know, Aussies are very smart but are easily distracted- so obedience training is a great idea! I know our pup would be a better behaved dog if I were a bit more consistent with him.

I'd love to see a picture of your baby! Finnegan will be 3 yrs old in March. He is a handsome black tri and weights in at about 55lbs.

do you have an overweight dog?
