Covid-19 ... coronavirus ... thoughts?

i've got to admit one positive about this, i'm getting better at using Excel ...

only one county in the US, but a fairly good representation about the complete failure of any federal "plan" ... if there is one. number of people being admitted to the hospital, number of cases moved to the ICU and the number of dead EACH DAY have not moved much (aside from a slight increase) in nearly 5 months of tracking data.

i'm going to make a prediction that's going to against everything that's being said about the upcoming flu season on top of the current pandemic. everyone seems to be predicting a surge in hospitalizations due to the normal flu season.... BUT... in any other past flu season, how many people were wearing facial coverings and keeping a social distance? how many seniors (the ones who essentially die from the normal flu virus each year) are NOT taking extreme measures to avoid an infection of any sort?

i predict the 2020/21 flu season will be one of the lowest on record.

now for the downside... when his lame duck administration sees the small number of normal flu infections and deaths, Trump is going to claim most the cases of COVID-19 are really the normal flu and this is just another ploy by the "deep state" to make him look (more) incompetent.

i used to see if i could spot a discarded mask every time i was out.
now it's not even a challenge anymore...

sad part... a year ago, if this was a Dorito's bag, i would have picked it up.
...these days i don't carry around a 10' pole.

the first death in the U.S. from COVID-19 has been tracked to 28 Feb this year.

with the death count now over 180 thousand, this calculates to one U.S. death every 87.3 seconds for the past 185 days.

with the politics playing heavily on decisions, right now 40% of the U.S. population surveyed said they would not accept a vaccine under the current federal administration. if something gets "magically" released before 3 November, that number will only get larger... the level of trust in Trump's management of the coronavirus pandemic is incredibly low.

Yeah, and people seem less concerned about it all the time. If what I am seeing in lack of compliance with basic safety guidelines is any indication, make wearing, distancing, hand washing, etc. Proving Joseph Stalin right "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths a statistic."

I will be happy to take any vaccine that seems to be safe and at least somewhat effective. No mater the administration. I have however not been following our Presidents suggest to take sanitizer products, not drinking Drano or Clorox. I have a somewhat higher standard.

the lighter side of a pandemic... my daily entertainment... picking up the newspaper (Mon - Thur for the NYT crossword), grabbing a cup of coffee and keeping an eye on the parking lot for a few minutes....

and then there is this...

about 3 weeks ago when i was sitting out there i saw the car with the dog who had this tennis ball in their mouth and let it drop... hadn't seen it in a week or so, but it resurfaced today... *sigh* ... this has become my life to keep myself from going nuts.

i was thinking about this yesterday... my mom is in Arlington Cemetery (my dad was a LtC, Army) and it's her birthday in a few days. if you have never seen the Vietnam War Memorial in DC it is a chilling sight. i relate it to the Grand Canyon... you can see 1000 pictures of the canyon, but until you stand on the rim, you will never appreciate the grandeur.

there are over 58 thousand names on that wall of those who died during the 19 years of Vietnam...
a wall to commemorate just the Americans who have died in the past six months would be over three times the size.

some day Trump might finally get his wall.
... but not as he imagined it.

initially i thought i might be doing this for 8-10 weeks...

... hard to see any improvement.
the only national strategy remains as ... "wait for a magic potion" while 100's of Americans keep dying every day.

It is a little hard to watch what is happening over there, It is hard to comprehend when you are from an area that has had a total of 4 cases for the whole pandemic in a state that has no new infections each day on a regular basis, we have 8 active cases in the state and all of them came in from elsewhere and are in quarantine. Even the state with a bad (compared to the rest of Australia) second wave has average cases back down to 18.2 for the 14 day average and dropping, their lockdown was harsh but effective.

so the karma has really hit the fan now... the most COVID-19 protected people in the country... U.S. president Trump and 1st lady Melania have tested positive. the difference in their BMI is pretty obvious. this could be bad for Trump. his obesity is definitely a condition that should not be taken lightly (... sorry, not a joke).

this is going to be a weird day.

early reports today from the WH have me wondering. Trump always wants to paint a slightly more than rosy picture of anything he sees as a problem, yet the first word this morning had Trump's condition as "light symptoms" and by noon it was "moderate symptoms". yet there is no sense in predicting anything. the odds are still slightly on his side, but the full course of COVID-19 is typically a roller coaster that lasts a few weeks which is considered a light case.

The conspiracy theory doing the rounds here is that they don't really have it. He is doing so poorly in the ratings & after the disastrous "debate" that he will lay low (is that even possible?) & will reappear in a couple of weeks after being "cured" by taking hydroxychloroquine. Tada. The world is saved, he's a hero & then guess what? Romps in with yet another unfathomable victory. It's a very scary & weird theory, but then everything about him is scary & weird.

well he's apparently off to Walter Reed via chopper. i'll only go as far as to say they will likely hold off on any really bad news or at least downplay anything, but this move would be a hard one to explain otherwise. in the back of my mind i'm imagining how Trump would be treating this situation if it was Joe Biden. Trump taking the high road is hard to picture.

another clue... i don't follow anyone on Twitter, but i haven't heard any news that Trump has used his phone since last night with the initial "we'll get through it" message.

so funny hearing the doctors reporting on Trump and trying to tap dance around his weight.
they seem to have settled on "mildly obese".

I am sure he is the best and most successfully obese man in history, just ask him. He's making obesity great again...
