Club 200 Plus

HA! My trainer asked me if I enjoyed exercise, and I smiled cheerfully and said, "No, I pretty much hate it more than anything." He nodded and said, "Yeah, it's going to be hell for a while. For a LONG while." Ugh.

So I am also asking if anyone has a work out routine they now enjoy? Or if they can tell a tale of hope about HATING exercise, and now not minding it?
I used to hate exercise and now i work out 5 times a week. I find i do get enjoyment from it but its not from the actual process but instead from the feeling after your have achived your goal, be it 1 or 2 miles walk or for the more experienced people a 5 mile plus run. One thing that works for me is i have a reward for after every session be it big or small to look forward to. Yesterday i did an hour on my exercise bike and i watched a dvd i was holding back for a while. Got satisfaction from the workout and then really enjoyed the dvd which was double the fun which put me in great form for the rest of the day. Works for me :)

Im here

I'm allowed to be here as I'm over 200lbs (at the start of this week I was 264 YUK).

Im not counting calories at all - I know what I should & shouldn't eat really & I know how big the portions should be. It just that Ive not put a limit on my intake for years.

Im simply having regular meals, keeping an eye on the fat content, not eating loads of choc/muffins/flapjack etc & cut right down on the booze - done a 2 day a week limit on booze intake (I was drinking half to a bottle per day of red wine).

So - it's nice to be here etc & I look forward to reading the posts.....

Oh yes must get a ticker thingy!!!!!

charjoe, I did that for a long time too, because I didnt want to feel like I was on a diet and thus, cheat! It worked~

Yay! I lost 3lbs and finally broke my plateau thanks to the info I learned on this site!!! so now 205lbs, cant wait, almost outta here! hehe

I dont really like excercise, sometimes I reallllly dont like it, but then again sometimes I do. What I am addicted to is how I feel afterwords. I just grin and bear it, and do it as hard as I can even if Id rather be shopping! Once its over im glad I did it and you get that endorphine high lol Its definitley not as bad now as it used to be, I used to hate it just like you but it does get easier so keep at it! You might just grow to love it~

I don't mind exercise except while I'm doing it, which usually makes me put curse words in my head about whoever's running it. Part of the reason was that I've been overweight my entire life and didn't see exercising as part of a big person's routine, so I felt silly. Also, some of that crap is uncomfortable, especially at the beginning. Last but not least, there (still) are certain activities I just can't stand. Put my on a treadmill and I'll sit for a week.

Now, with all that said. I also don't like feeling weak. I don't like being winded after one flight of stairs. I like it when my muscles feel solid. I like it when I can do something this week that I definitely couldn't do last week.

I don't know what your fitness goals are, but look around and see what your aim it. For strength there's a world beyond weights (even for men--ask Arnold about it); yoga builds strength and flexibility. For cardio, some people (me among them) really prefer to be outside than in a place where I constantly see the same thing go past me.

And of course there are plenty of DVDs that could be fun (and no one can see you doing).

Sorry for being so long-winded. I really hated exercise, too, but I kept experimenting with different kinds until I found some stuff I like to do. The end.

New and ready to lose!

Hi,

I am new here and I am ready to lose this weight! I have started eating healthier and walking a mile on the treadmill. I know the results will be slow, and that in itself doesn't make it easy. But you have to start somewhere. I hope to get encouragement from this and keep myself motivated!

Yeah, I have never been athletic... But for some reason I thought it would be a beginner level to hop on the treadmill for an hour, it's not. At least not for me!

I started last week on an exercise plan, and *so far* go to the gym 4 times per week. I walk on the treadmill with an incline to do a 20 minute mile, and then I do 5 minutes on the elliptical. I feel like kind of a loser to only do 30 minutes of exercise... but for now it's what I feel comfortable with! I am thinking maybe this will be my routine for another week, and then I can push myself for longer times... Maybe 2 miles each time instead of 1? Does everyone start like this? Or am I just being a wuss? I just want to be more active, but feel so totally confused by the world of fitness!

No your not a wuss, each person has their own pace. You might see some1 beside you going alot faster but remember once they were probably in your position. trick is to add a little bit on to your routine as time goes by. maybe .1 of a mile and when you get comfortable add another .1 and so on and so forth. In a few months you will be flying. Just stick with the diet and do as much as you can, no1 can ask for anymore.

I have just started (again). I dont want to "diet" but rather cut portions, eat more natural and high fiber foods, and exercise more. One problem I have is I love craft beer and wine, I refuse to cut them out completely but I really have to watch my intake. Just a single microbrew has 200 calories...yikes.

I currently weigh 230 after an all time high of 245. I am sick of being fat. I was skinny in my 20s but I didnt eat. I know what I look like thin and I dont even want to be thin....I think 145 to 150 is about right. I started working out last October but stopped in late November. I am fortunate enough to own a treadmill with incline.

Why is it so hard? :cuss:

I guess this is the place for me. Although I will never be out of the 200 club, lol. I think I would be sickly looking if I was under 200lbs. My goal weight it 250lbs. I am 6'5" with a large frame.

Argh!

The elliptical seemed like something I could master yesterday... but today it seemed ridiculously hard! What gives!! :reddevil:

Applehead

Applehead,

re the beer & wine thing. I was drinking a half to a bottle red wine a day plus more at weekends (and lots more if I went out lol). I have found that what seems to work for me is just to have 2 days a week where I drink - last Friday I had nearly a bottle wine & Saturday I had one glass. I have very successfully lost weight in the past doing this. I just tend to go hell for leather when Im not monitoring my intake!!!!

Any workout routine will get boring if you do it every single day without change. I did the same workout for months and got so bored that I started to dread going to the gym. So, rather than falling off the wagon, I incorporated more variety into my workout. When I first started, I needed the low impact/high calorie burn of the elliptical. Now that I'm fitter and have less weight crushing my joints, I can do other things without so much fear that I'll wreck my knees. I won't lie...that first HIIT session on the treadmill gave me sore knees for days, so I dialed it back and did low impact cardio while they recovered. The next time I did it, it was not as bad. High impact work still does hurt my knees, though; I probably need to get with a trainer to figure out why that is, i.e. what I'm doing wrong, am I wearing the right footwear, am I being too ambitious, etc.

I'm still not crazy about exercise but I'm at a point now where I feel lazy or guilty if I DON'T do it, and sometimes I do crave it. I crave the exhaustion, the sweat, the buzz.

Keep at it.

Yeah as is said in the post before this 1 the eliptical is a low impact, high calorie burning machine. it works the whole body so would be a hard machine for a novice to use. Maybe you had more energy yesterday, i find no 2 days are alike to be honest. Just keep plugging away and if you find a machine to hard try something else.

I find it's easier to do the elliptical when I put it to a beat. When I started I had to use songs that were about 100 bpm, but at my height I could do 145 bpm for half and hour without dying!!

Training for a 5K?

Ha, I only managed about a minute on the elliptical today. They have two different models at the gym I go to, I thought they were both the same, maybe I'll try them both out in one session to see if they're different, or if I'm just fluctuating between weak and strong! :hat:

Some of my co-workers were talking today about training for a MARATHON. Once we all saw how many miles a marathon was, we decided to start with a 5K!! :)

I read up on a training schedule for how to go from Couch Potato to 5K... and I'm going to give it a go! I don't know that I have ever jogged... I hope I can build myself up! I'm starting week one of training tomorrow, and thankfully that just requires a 5 minute brisk walk warm up followed by a repeated cycle of 60 seconds of jogging and then 90 seconds of walking until you have passed 20 minutes, and repeat this 3-4 times during this week. Since I'm trying to think of jogging as just rhythmic walking (walking with a bounce), I hope it won't be too bad!

I just hope I stick to my goals, I've been this motivated before and then crashed... I don't want that to happen again!

Hey, that's a great program!! I'm 5'1" and was 235 when I started the Couch to 5k (that about a 43 BMI). I didn't have a stride length long enough to really log the miles, but I could totally do it (and I definitely started from Couch Potato status!!). Having a stopwatch is helpful (the first couple weeks especially).

Which elliptical do you like the best? The stationary arms one or the movey arms one?

Ray of Hope!

Well that makes me feel hopeful! Maybe I'll make it to jogger status after all! :coolgleamA:

I like the elliptical with the moving arms... I like that if the fronts of my thighs feel tired, I can pretend I'm walking backwards and use different muscles! And I like that if I'm REALLY dragging I can just push more with my arms! Probably not the correct way, but it makes it easier for me!

Do you still keep up with the jogging? How do you get your exercise nowadays?

I have totally used my arms to make my legs go faster on the elliptical. When I first started using it in college, I was surprised to see muscles in my arms after a week or two. It took me forever to figure out where they had come from!

Unfortunately, I don't jog anymore. I don't live in a neighborhood big enough to jog around and there's lots of traffic out the front door. I also hurt my knee by resting a couple weeks and deciding I could go 25 minutes without stopping again. Nope. I'm walking right now, training for a half-marathon in March. And toning with workouts from a fitness magazine. And playing Wii fit. :)
