Is drinking beer bad for a diet.

I like to drink about a beer a day, some days i don't but 5 out of 7 days i do, usually just a 22 ounce, sometimes two. I want to know if it's bad for my diet, or good, because i heard all that's in it is dead calories, but if that's the case why the beer belly?

Drinking does make me hunger, kinda like how weed makes weed addicts hungry, so usually i drink before i eat, so i won't get more cravings.

I took nutrition in college, but i guess i wasn't paying attention when they were talking about beer.

I've always drank lots of beer. No, its not good for diets. In fact, its one of the factors leading to my weight gain in the first place. But I educated myself on calorie counting, through this site and other resources, and have found lower calorie options for all varieties of food and beverage. For beer, I like bud ice light @ 110 cal & miller lite ice @ 125 cal. I like these because of the higher alc content of ice beer gives more kick. There are also much lower calorie beers out there although weaker. Don't quote me on these, but just off the top of my head: Guiness-125 cal, Michelob Ultra 95 cal, & the new rolling rock light I believe is only 83 cal, as some lower calorie options. These are decent improvements over many beers having around 150 calories and sometimes more. But I've also cut the quantity and frequency of drinking. Although I can't eliminate it completely just yet. I like beer too much.

well the best thing in beer is the water. after that it gets alittle iffy. There is sugar to feed the yeast and get it all bubbly and good. So its prob not the best but im from texas and ill never tell you not to drink beer. after all when you go into the local stop n go store, water is 1.30 or two cans of beer for 1.10 so when beer is cheaper than water it has to be good for you lol

2 beers for $1! Wow

Hey there,

Beer is very high in carbohydrates, so unless you are doing the exercise to burn it off, it will just be converted to fat - hence the beer belly!!! There are some low - carbohydrate beers on the market, I live in Australia so not sure what is really on offer for you, but have a look around and I'm sure you'll find some!!

Also, alcohol has an effect on the ADH hormone (Anti-Diuretic) in our body. This is why you pee more when you are drinking alcohol, which leads to dehydration of cells which makes u thirsty, and u drink more beer (viscous cycle).

Hope this helps!

Katie

yea the two beers for a dollar i can normally walk past. Its things like bush and gosh watered down things i cant spell lol. i normally just opt for the water and pay alittle extra

Yeah pinky i know about the adh hormone, i'm a nurse, and it doesn't make you crave more beer, its water it makes you crave, you get hangovers cus of this too, it dehydrates you so when you wake up you feel sick, the way to stop a hangover is to drink a lot of water before you go to sleep, that way you won't be dehydrated when you wake up.

Thanks for the advice i guess i'll cutback on the beer but won't give it up. I'm doing this based on the weight i seen you drop fatass.

I rarely wake up hungover. But I do wake up thirsty, and alot of water does the trick.

I find that if i drink a large glass of water before going to bed after a big drinking night i rarely get a hangover!! Also, i always go to bed when im sober, coz if i go to sleep when im still drunk i almost always wake up drunk !!!

I think one of the main problems with alcohol in general is that it weakens your resolve. If I have a couple of drinks then I get that 'I don't care' attitude, and end up eating all the wrong things. Also if I do over do it and end up with a hang over, I don't get headaches, I just feel queasy and eating helps me feel better. So that's 2 days off my diet, not just 1  ! Just aswell I'm off booze at the moment :D

When I drink, before I go to a friends house, or to the event, I eat before I go, so that when I'm there, i dont do the "taste festival" thing filling my plate with different foods.

I'm not saying drinking alcohol is healthy, but, would taking shots or doing hard liquor be less unhealthy than beer? Since you're consuming less than beer? thats how i always saw it, if i was asked, U want a beer? or some bacardi? i answer, i'll go hard.

But look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, that guy drank beer n hard liquor in between workouts. I even have a video where he's in the gym, and an interviewer introduces Jim Beam to him, and he fills the cap with Jim Beam and takes a shot..right in the gym in between a exercises:eek:

I know calories wise, spirits are a lot better than beer, especially if you use sugar free mixers.

I don't know how Arnie managed with that!! I read Oprah's 'Make The Connection' book, and she said that if she had a couple of glasses of wine, the next day she would feel tired and working out would be really hard work. But then maybe it is like someone else mentioned on another thread, and its actually the dehydration that is affecting you. Perhaps if you drank plenty of water before and after drinkning, and the next morning, you would be okay?

I'll let you know after my birthday! :D

Yeah i drink liquor but i like beer for the taste and its less harder on the liver. I've been drinking guiness lately, its 3 times as strong as most beers so it doesn't take but 1 cup to make you tipsy.

i love guinness, nice stout beer. It's a little more expensive than the regular stuff, but, its a great beer. It looks like the beer that they drink in cartoons..like the Simpsons heheh, nice color.

Drinking beer on weekends?

If I keep my diet good during the week and workout will drinking on the weekend kill my weight loss or will i still be able to do it? I drink probably 20-30 beers in a weekend. Thanks for the help

20 - 30 beers at the lowest calorie light beer, Amstel light, at 93 calories per beer that's roughtly 2500 calories.. but i'm sure you're not drining amstel light. though that 2500 calories could fit into your weekend's calories.

BUT - this is where i pull out the I'm not a parent (thank god) I just mother people n the internet lecture.

I'm honestly more concerned about the binge drinking you're doing on the weekends rather than the amount of calories involved. there's nothign wrong with drinking beer if that's what you enjoy - that is a lot of beer over a short period of time though... and it does raise a red flag.

I don't think drinking on the weekends is necessarily a bad thing but I would definitely cut down on how much you drink. 20-30 a weekend:eek: that is WAY to many for a person to drink over a couple of days.

The way I see it is that everyone should have a cheat day and if drinking beer is what you like to do then by all means do it. You have to have fun in life. Just as long as you're not drinking it every day... you'll be ok.

I used to drink a ton of liquor, beer, and wine - in the end I lost 20 pounds but I was sure not to binge eat the next day. That was the only downfall. If I drank a lot then I wanted to eat the bad foods, like fast food... etc - I just found a way around it.

Cheers!!! ;)
